Re: Ekaterinoslav connection? #belarus

David W. Harris <dharris1@...>

My grandfather was >from Rechitsa, Minsk gubernia, Belarus. About
1900-1904, as the story goes, his political activities made things too hot
for him at home and he went to Alexandrovsk in the Ekaterinaslav gubernia.
There he worked in a clothing "factory", met the boss' sister, married, and
in March 1906 emigrated to New York.

I don't know if the political climate was any better in Alexandrovsk, or
that it was just far enough away that nobody knew him.

I must have copied Howard P's e-mail address incorrectly, so am replying
to the list.

The Mormons [Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints] have something
like 37 reels of microfilm of Jewish records >from Breslau/Wroclaw,
covering, with gaps, 1760-1940. The 20th c. records are only cemetery
burial lists & a Rabbi's notebook; for post-1882 data correspondence with
the Wroclaw City Hall is necessary - see Wiener's new book.

Newcomers to research in this area can ask me to send information on Jewish Genealogy in the formerly German
sections of Poland.

Hello,
I have been doing research on my mother's family, the CAPLINs, and a
new-found cousin gave me some interesting information. He
told me that my grandfather and his brothers originally came from
Russia > (formerly spelled KAPLAN), and were brought to London, England
by the > Rothschild family. I just found information via the internet
saying that the Rothschild family helped fund the Jews' Free School.
They "provided immigrant children with a refuge and a means of escape
from poverty, educated them, anglicized them and sent them out to the
world fit to contribute to society."
Is anyone familiar with this organization? Do you know if there are
existing records that would help me with my research? >Thank you!

A proper Polish word is DA,BROWA (oak wood). Polish a, ("a" with the
tail) is pronounced as nasal "o", hence Dabrowa is pronounced as
[Dohn broh vah]. There are virtually hundreds of Polish villages named
Da,browa, Da,browka, De,bice, De,bno, De,bowe, De,by and so on.
The largest know Da,browa is industrial city Dabrowa Gornicza, (ex
Russian Empire territory) which next to neighboring towns of Zawiercie,
Bedzin and Sosnowiec formed Zaglebie Region with large Jewish population
prior to W.W.II. (The main heroes of tragic comic book "Maus" are from
this region).

How Da,browa became known as archaic Dombrowa? Russians have replaced
nasal Polish "a," with nearest sounding "om" in Cyrillic, and Austrians
used "Dabrowa" (without the tail in 'a'.
Jewish people have also adopted name Dombrowa (e.g.. main Jewish
communist spy during W.W.II in Belgium, chief of organization "Red
Orchestra" (Rouge Orchestre), Leopold Trepper used pseudonym "Domb". He
was originally >from Da,browa (Dombrowa) Gornicza.
