JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

Recently I received information >from the latest version of the 1942 Vilna
Ghetto List, relating to LAPIDUS names. What was very interesting about this latest information is that it included occupations, which I haven't been able to translate. Can anybody translate these occupations or direct me to an online site which might give me some information. I do not have any other access to Jewish or LDS resources as I live out in the bush. The occupations/classifications listed were : siuvejas/siuveja rastininke laiku siuveja skalbytoja tapytojas darbininkas stalius In fact these words might be in Lithuanian? Can anyone direct me to an online site where I could have a look at this latest version of the 1942 Ghetto List. Also, does anyone have lists of businesses/occupations for Vilna say prior to 1915 - I know my GGGF Ahron ben Shlomo Lapidus b.1844 Vilna/Paberze had a business - LAPIDUS FURNITURE CO. - three branches - run by my GGGF Ahron ben Shlomo Lapidus in Vilna and his brother Beny in Libau and another brother in Paris (ancestor of Ted Lapidus and his son Olivier Lapidus and Ted's sister Rose Mett-Torrente). Although our family did have limited contact with the Lapidus family in Paris in the 1960s, when the Paris branch of Lapidus Furniture Co. was still in business and was being managed by possibly a granddaughter of ? Lapidus whom my late Great Uncle met in Paris on his way to the Rome Olympic Games in 1960 where he was an official guest. Thank you. SILBER/STEINHAUER/LAPIDUS

K.& L. Bertelsen <klb@...>
I recently had a look at the wonderful All Lithuania Database and one of
the names I entered was SILBER - which is one of the names my Mama Nana told me - I think it could be connected to our SHTEINGOER/SHTEINGAUER/SHTEINHAUER family (Novy Gorod, Vilna) or our LAPIDUS family >from Paberze/Vilna. Anyway, although no SILBER names came up, one of the entries on the list was : SELIBER JOSEF 1899, Snipiskes, Lith. Hamelitz #223 I couldn't find a shtetl called Snipiskes listed in Lithuanian Jewish Communities. However, in the information we recently received >from the Vilnius Archives there was a marriage record : Vilna citizen Josel ben Lipman SHTEINGAUER, not married, 24 years old, married Vilna citizen, Miss Chana-Michla bat Berko SNIPISHKER, 23 years old on 26th January 1903 (Julien date?). I am pretty certain Josel was the son of Lipman ben Yaacov Shteingauer b. 1850 Novy Gorod, Vilna, who was the youngest brother of my GGGM Bathsheva (nee SHTEINGAUER/STEINHAUER LAPIDUS b.1841). We hadn't known about him or his two brohers before we received the information >from Vilnius and previously only knew about our GGGM and her three sisters. Also some information we received regarding the 1942 Vilna Ghetto Lists included Moshe SNIPISKIER B.1882 at the same address as Shmuel Shteingauer B.1911. I think this information was actually >from Bleter Vegn Vilna rather than the 1942 Ghetto List. Although I have seen information >from the latest version of the 1942 Vilna Ghetto List, this only applied to the LAPIDUS names, so I have not seen the latest information relating to STEINHAUER names and I haven't seen reference to this being online yet. What was very interesting about this latest information is that it included occupations, which I haven't been able to translate. What was also interesting about the LAPIDUS list was the reference to the Kallis fur factory as our GGGGF Yankel Shteingauer was definitely in the fur trade in Vilna. I will write a separate message to the list about this. Does anyone know anything about a shtetl called SNIPISKES or the name SNIPISHKER/SNIPISKIER? Has anyone got any SILBER or possibly SELIBER names from Vilna on their trees? We have some information about the SILBERfamily in Paris which we definitely also know is connected somehow to our STEINHAUER-LAPIDUS family. Does anyone have lists of businesses/occupations for Vilna say prior to 1915 - I know our GGGGF was in the fur business, but do not know if he had a shop or a factory or was a trader in fur. Is the latest version of the 1942 Vilna Ghetto list available on line - I do not have access to any other Jewish libraries/resources or LDS as I live out in the bush? I am particularly interested in finding out about any STEINHAUER and LAPIDUS and STUCER/STUTZER and ROSENBLATT and SILBER and SNIPISKER names - the family of my late GGM Anna (Chana Steinhauer Lapidus) Aronis/Pollack b. Vilna 1878 d. Melbourne 1955, and her slaughtered sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews....... Thank you. Searching: BINDER siblings of Camp Trupin (1950's)

For a friend without internet access, I am trying to track down a
brother and sister named Gary and Susan BINDER. Gary was born about 1940, Susan a few years later. When last recorded, in the 1950s, they were campers at Camp Trupin, a Jewish summer camp run by a Westchester family. Susan is presumably married, so current last name is uncertain. Any leads would be much appreciated. Stephen Warshall Gloucester, MA

Harriet,
Does this ILKA come >from the same town or have any other information in the manifest listing that would lead you to believe he is the same person other than age and occupation? I think you have enough for reasonable suspicion that it is, indeed, your gggf. In my estimation the surname is not all too common and since some other important criteria fit you may assume it is him. However, until you get more solid proof you can only assume and not be certain. The manifest often lists important things such as birthplace, place traveling from, nearest living relative in place alien is traveling from, etc. Do any of these things match other information you have? Searching: Abraham LEVY's siblings (London to New York, 1868?)

Rica Goldberg
As we all know, this genealogy research can become quite a soul destroyer;
but as we are told, we must keep trying. So here goes - I am trying once again. The Levy family I am dealing with is a New York one so perhaps someone out there can help me, or better than that, maybe I will strike it lucky. And this Levy family is a famous one too, as one of its members a certain Abraham LEVY was a New York lawyer at the "turn of the century" who prosecuted in an murder case. It was called The Nan Patterson Case and the film "A Girl on a Red Velvet Swing" with Joan Collins is reputed to be loosely based on it. Abraham Levy, born in London in May 1861 was taken to USA in about 1868/9 by his parents with two older sisters Sarah & Becky and brother Israel born 1863 in London. I have found the present day descendants of Abraham and his brother Israel. But Abraham had other siblings born in New York. Louis, Benny, Harry, Mamie and Dora. Dora was born approximately 1878. I think that Sarah and Becky each married a man by the name of BRINN and HARRIS (possibly Jack HARRIS). In approx 1875 Abraham aged nearly 14 and his siblings went to live in Rutgers Place , N.Y. After trying and trying again and writing to the Law Society etc in New York I eventually found his present-day descendant and eventually got to meet her. She gave me the name of Israel's present-day descendant and after a few years of corresponding I recently had a visit >from her in our home, which was most enjoyable and we felt so very comfortable with her. However, neither of these people know the present-day descendants of the other siblings. Abraham died in 1920 and his obituary appeared in the New York times in 1920 and it said he was 58 years old, so presumably he died sometime between January and May 1920. Possibly his Will might give the name of his married sisters if he left anything to them but for me to try to trace his Will is extremely difficult as I live in Manchester England. Without it being too presumptuous of me, is there anyone out there who could help me in this matter? Rica Goldberg (Mrs) Manchester, England Researching: KAMINSKY (possibly KAMENSHCHIK) >from Yanova nr Kovno, Lithuania; DIAMOND (possibly DIAMONT or DIMONT) >from Kovno, Lithuania; COHEN - a glazier >from Poland; Chaim ESTRY >from Poland; GOLDBERG (possibly Shloozitel) >from Kovno, Lithuania.

He had prepared all the documents for their marriage. But he was killed in France at the Marne battle in 1940. Of course she could not be considered as a widow. The family KRAUSZ (Hermann, Erzebeth and children) was living in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary in 1939 except two brothers : Andre who was killed in 1940, and another brother, Zoltan, was a sailor on an English boat called "The KELET" . He was interned as a war prisonner in Ottawa at the beginning of the war. Then she knew that he tried to find her in 1942 but she did not want to give her address to the Red Cross. After the war, she could not find him anymore. Now a pensioner, she is trying to find Zoltan KRAUSZ more than ever. Eventually other members of the family if they escaped >from the Shoa. This seems to be true for both the Hebrew and "American" names. Thanks for any enlightenment. Mike Lipsie MODERATOR NOTE: Have you read FAQ #17 on Jewish names on our web site?
