Advice required #2 #general

Gailcopela@...

One fellow did reply to my earlier query about my elusive ggm. The info he
provided presumed she made her way to the U.S. While this isn't entirely
impossible, odds are she stayed around England. That is the presumption I must
work on first. So, all you UK JewishGenners, where would I start to try to
find out more about this woman's movements? I'm flailing about in all
directions at the moment (not a good research strategy!). I'm hoping that once
I've obtained my ggf's death certificate, perhaps I'll glean more information
about his estranged wife, but I'm not betting on it.

Claire Petersky <petersky@...>

I'd be interested to find out which camp too.

Remember that 95% of the Jews that lived in Latvia were killed in the
Holocaust. The chance that any survived was unlikely. All the Jews in my
ancestral shtetl of Sassmachen I have read were killed. The tombstones in
the cemetary were used in the 1960s in a Soviet road project. :-(

Re: Riga and World War II #latvia

Renee Gottesman <reneeg@...>

Gail,

Jews >from Riga were most certainly greatly impacted by World War II. A
second cousin of mine who was born in Riga is a Holocaust survivor. He
recently published a book in which, among other things, he talks about
his childhood in Riga just prior to the war, and his subsequent
concentration camp experiences. He, his father, and one cousin were the
only European family members to survivor.=20

I have checked, and the book is available for purchase through
amazon.com. I have no financial interest in this book, just great
appreciation for the opportunity to learn more about my cousin and other
members of my family.

relating to Riga. =20
=20
Work and Death Camps experienced:
Riga ghetto, Lenta, Salaspils, Stutthof, Burgraben.

Post-liberation places experienced (including DP camps):=20
Lauenburg, Lodz, Kattowitz (now Katowice, Poland), Bratislava, Vienna,
Linz, Munich, Landsberg.

People mentioned >from Riga (city and camp):=20
KASTRES Edel, STRUGATZ Joske, ZOLTINSKY family (furrier), STEINMAN
Menachem and Boruch , MANES (sexton), KAUFMAN Arthur and Max, LURIE
Isser (silversmith), BLUM, HERZBERG, KAPLOWITZ Chyena (married name).
Also, our family surnames of RACS, SHUSTERMAN and SILVERSTEIN.=20

I hope some of this proves to be helpful to you.

Sources for NYC obits #general

Peter Blood <nowy@...>

How would I identify sources to do obit lookups in the NYC area?

FYI: Four are my Jewish Ellis Island immigrant great grandparents. All
died between 1938 and 1960 in the Bronx. I have death dates for all. All
emigrated between 1895 and 1905. Two were >from Russia for whom I believe
Yiddish was a first language. Two were >from Austria (Galicia) for whom I
believe Polish was a first language. One was a granduncle who immigrated
with them at the age of two and died in 1990 on Long Island.

Although all had interesting lives, they were not famous. Does this mean
it would be unlikely for them to be in the New York Times? What papers
might they be in?

East Side Workmen's Benevolent Association - NYC #general

WRodman202@...

Is anyone out there familiar with the East Side Workmen's Benevolent
Association, a small New York City burial society established in 1901, which has a small burial plot in Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY? I would like to learn more about it.

In case anyone might be interested I have copied the names of its officers and members >from the cemetery gates.

I do hope it's useful to somebody. A few of the
names are rather unusual. Please reply privately to me for
any information.
