Searching: SHEAR/SCHER #general

Rita Margolies <b4kids@...>

My pgf's name was Max SHEAR on my father's birth certificate in 1911.
(Later on the spelling changed to SCHER).I have his death certificate that
says he's >from Russia. It gives his father's name as William and mother's
name as Fannie GOLDSTEIN. I also know he was a patient in Central Islip for
20 years and that he died there. I know he was naturalized but I have no
idea when. That's my hard evidence.

There is no one alive now that knows anything about him. I have his death
certificate. I've written to Central Islip for information, but I have no
idea whether they'll be able to supply anything useful. I don't know if he
had brothers or sisters, or whether his parents emigrated with him. I've
written for my gp's marriage license info--guessing they were married about
a year before my father was born since there was little birth control in
those days.

Does anyone have any other suggestions since I would love to find other
relatives if they exist?

Rita

Kozovka and Shmyrki #general

Rita Margolies <b4kids@...>

My mgm is >from the town of Kazufka (Polish)=Kozivka (Kozovka)(Current
Ukranian name) 20 Km SE >from Ternopol . My mgf is >from the town of
Skamrochy = Shmyrki , 60 Km E of Ternopol ( 40 Km NE >from Kozvika). This
information was kindly provided by Jacob Laor.

Is there anyone else searching for relatives in these towns? I have already
contact the Gesher Galicianer group and there is no one there. Apparently
they are very small towns and rate only a star on the map >from the Shtetl
Finder.

Searching FIGUR, PICKHOLTZ, and EPSTEIN >from that area.

Does any one out there know if the Jewish cemetaries are still intact? I'm
contemplating a visit or if records are available in that area?

Temple Ohabei Shalom in Boston #general

Alan Perry <perry2@...>

I e-mailed Temple Ohabei Shalom at synagogue@ohabei.org on September 8
and wrote to the Jewish Cemetery Association of Massachusetts, whom I
believe manage the affairs of Temple Ohabei Shalom, on September 16. In
both messages I asked how I should go about finding information on
relatives buried in the Temple Ohabei Shalom cemetery.

I haven't had a reply >from either of them as of September 28 and wonder
if anyone out there has contacted them either successfully or
unsuccessfully in the past and would be willing to share their
experience.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Alan

Re: Interesting Research Results! #belarus

David Goldman <davic@...>

An interesting detail is that he was *absent* >from the census of 1854...
It just occured to me that *absent* must be different than death,
which is stated explicitly, so the absence can be attributed to
something like being away on business at the time of the census. But
each of several years? That would be the same for Shmuel as well as
his grandfather Mordechai I guess.

Shalom,

The Plock Shtetl CO-OP is pleased to provide a status report:
Years available on the Mormon (LDS) films: 1808 - 1887
Total 15 microfilms containing about 20000 indices of vital records.

* Microfilm 1733680 and 1733681, covering Birth records years 1879, 1882,
1883, 1884, 1885, 1886, and BDM for years 1880 and 1881 (total of 2290
records) were transliterated in the past (REIPP) and are available in JRI
database.

* Microfilm nr 729207 covering years 1822 1823 1824 1825
(total of 469 records) has been posted as well.

* The transliteration of microfilm 730201 has been successfully completed
recently, (total of 2094 records). Years 1826, 1829, 1830, 1831 were already
posted and the remaining years: 1827, 1828, 1832-36 will be posted soon
in the growing JRI database.
Thanks to Tony Stern, Gideon Carmi, Gabi Lana and Debbie Schnur for their
support
and devotion in transliteration those years!

I have posted all the information about this project in
a special Web Page, containing the project Status Report updated
from time to time at:
http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/JRIPLOCK.HTM

There are volunteers >from 6 countries, making this project a real special
international Jewish joint venture.

But dear Chaverim, with the progress to date, much remains to be done.
To achieve our goal of indexing all the available vital records of Plock
more volunteers are needed to data enter the index pages (which
have already been photocopied). Name lists >from the work already
completed will be sent to volunteers to help them identify hard-to-read
names.

Those thousands of indices pages, written in calligraphic and picturesque
Polish hand writing, are waiting for some good souls to decipher them and
register them on the web, for generations to come...

Even if you do not have a direct interest in Plock, your help will be
welcomed and appreciated.

I also need a volunteer to photocopy the last remaining microfilms
from the Russian period in one of the LDS libraries in the world.
Please help to disclose the traces of our ancestors in
beautiful Plock, near the Wisla riverside, where once we
walked...

Shalom v'eGmar Khatima Tova to you all.
