Re: latvia digest: September 29, 1998 #latvia

Carol Lieberman <cmenetwork@...>

I went to the Libau cemetery with Aleksandr Feigmanis. The cemetery is in
generally good repair. The same family has taken care of it since 1886. The
records are intact as well. The caretaker has just been kind enough to clear
my ggmother's grave for me, and I will now have it maintained and planted with flowers.

Aleks has the lists and the photos of the cemetery. Probably we could get the
list for jewgen.

I would like to participate as well.

I did not know there was a Courland sub-group of Latvia SIG. I would like to
know how to work with it.

I know GOTTDIENER, but not GOTTESDIENER. The GOTTDIENER family I know were
from Hajdunanas and Debrecen, but of course nearly all Hungarian Jews from
that part of Hungary orginated in Galicia (see Marton's essay titled the
Family Tree of Hungarian Jews in Braham's Hungarian Jewish Studies, Volume
1). There were survivors, and some live in Israel including Moshav Nir
Galim.

In response to previous discussion. The name Koch is a common Jewish family
name in Alsace (Elzas), now north-east France, previously German (prior to
WW1). Many Alsace Jews also settled in adoining areas of Germany (Black-Forest
& Rhine Valley) and Switzerland.
Best wishes,

Searching: GOODMANS in Manchester #general

David Goldman <davic@...>

Are there any Jewishgenners out there in Manchester England, specifically
in the Prestwich area, who can direct me to GOODMANs who came to Manchester
at the beginning of the century? As I have written before, our family
changed their name >from KRASINSKY to other names: GRUBERMAN, GOLDMAN and
GOODMAN. I would love to find the GOODMANs who we are related to. No one
knows where or who they might be, except that their ancestor was also
Shneur ZALMAN!

PS I want to publicly thank Tom Venetianer who was really helpful with me
in getting some things in historical perspective.

Searching: LEVINS, LEVINSKY #general

I am looking for relatives of my grandfather Reuben LEVINS >from New York.
Reuben was the second of four children of Lev LEVINSKY and Malke, whose last
name meant "sunshine". Samuel b. 1898, Reuben b. Aug 1, 1900, Ben and then
Eva, dates of birth unknown. Samuel's children included Rose LEVINS, Nathan
LEVINS or LEVINSKY and Dorothy, whose married name was HART. Ben's children
were Milton LEVINS and Dorothy, who married a sports writer named Tex MAULE.
Samuel also had a brother, Sussman LEVINSKY, whose adopted daughter married
Felix von DOLKE, a descendant of someone called TheBlack Knight, who left
Germany for the US because he was fed up with war in Europe, but no-one
remembers when this is supposed to have happened.

My father's paternal grandmother was named something that translated into

Jewishgen success story! #general

Ben Green <bcgreen@...>

Dear JewishGenners-
I am writing to share with you all a success story that would not
have been possible without JewishGen and, especially, the incredible
help of a subscriber named Naomi Fatouris.
Back in 1995, I posted a message asking if anyone had ever heard
of a man named Senia Solomonoff, who was supposedly a famous ballet
dancer in the 1920's, or of Senia's brother, who was a concert violinist
in South America. Senia and his brother were the sons of my
great-grandmother's sister, whose name I did not know. I got no
response, and gave up on ever finding any information about that branch
of my family tree. And when my second daughter was born in Nov. 1995, I
quit reading my JewishGen messages, for lack of time and energy. So,
when a man >from Kiev named Vitaly Kanevsky also wrote to JewishGen
looking for information on his great-uncle, Senia Solomonoff, I did not
notice it.
Naomi Fatouris, however, DID notice, and knew at once that Vitaly
Kanevsky and I had to be related to each other. (Up until that point, I
did not know that I had any living relatives in Russia, and Vitaly did
not know he had any in the US!) Naomi tried to reach me, but my e-mail
address had changed. She did not give up, and finally wrote to Susan
King, who tracked me down with a letter by snail-mail. I immediately
e-mailed Naomi, who put me in touch with my "new" cousin, Vitaly.
I just received e-mail >from him this morning, and have already
written him back. This is, by far, the biggest genealogical
"break-through" I've had in all my years of researching, and without
Naomi and JewishGen, it would have been completely impossible! As I
told Naomi, to find information on one's ancestors is thrilling enough,
but to find living, breathing relatives you didn't know you had is
really a miracle!
Thanks again to Naomi, Susan King, and to all JewishGen readers -
keep up the good work - anything is possible!
