NARA costs and response time #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

I recently sent a request for naturaliztion application
to the Northeast Regional Office of the National
Archives. Their response took less than three weeks,
but I had given them the number of the petition.

I used a US address.

The cost was not six dollars as stated in JewishGen's
FAQ, but ten dollars.

* Auschwitz inmates records and fate #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Dear all,

I just received a letter >from the Auschwitz Museum, containing quite
detailed data about the fate of 7 of my close relatives. It took them about
3 months to reply to my original request. For those who are interested in
obtaining similar information, here is the procedure:

1. Don't send email. They will NOT reply. Write instead. Their address is:

Panstowe Muzeum Oswiecim Brzezinka
Mr. Jerzy Wroblewski - Director
32-603 Oswiecim 5
Polska - Poland
Phone: (0-33) 432-022
Fax: (0-33) 431-934

They seem to understand English but their reply came in Polish :(

2. Inform them what you wish, stating clearly your intentions - is it for
genealogical research or what?

3. If you have names and any other information about family members sent to
this camp, tell them all you know. If you only suspect that they were sent
to Auschwitz, tell them the *full* names of persons you wish them to look
up. I heard that they will not do blind name searches. I knew a lot about 7
people, I got complete record extracts for all of them.

4. Do no expect to hear that people were killed there. Their answer is
laconic: the documented person was still on the camp's record on date
so-and-so. I heard that this is the entry when that person was executed.
They will also inform if the person was transferred to an other KZ.

5. There is no cost for this service; you just have to be patient.

6. For further searches they refer you to the following organization. You
can try this too:

Internationaler Sucherdienst
(International Search Service)
Grosse Allee 5-9
D-34444 Arolsen
Deutschland - Germany

I hope this is useful to some chaverim. May the memory of all our martyrs
live in our hearts.
b'Shalom

Age of Yeshiva students #general

Olga G. Parker <OGParker@...>

Does anyone know what the average age of a Yeshiva student was? Was it
like more like a High School age, or were they advanced students studying
to be rabbis?

I am trying to figure out approximately when my gf attended the Volozhin
Yeshiva. I only know that he is said to have attended there, and that he
was a rabbi briefly in Wales (no further information on town or year). I
know that he sailed >from Liverpool in 1903, said he had been there 7 months
and was a correspondent. Yet family lore says he served as a rabbi in a
small town in Wales.

Thanks,

Olga G. Parker/So. Dakota

Burial Society Records #general

Vivian Kahn

Subject: re: NJ burial society records
From: Carol Skydell <skydell@vineyard.net>
Date: Sat, 29 Aug 1998 11:23:32 -0400
X-Message-Number: 6

Allen Jordan asked about accessing the records of a defunct
burial society and on 8/29 Carol Skydell responded that burial societies
actually functioned somewhat like insurance companies and suggested writing
to the State Insurance Commissioner.

I was directed to the State Corporations Dept. for info about the
Maramarosziget Lodge in whose section of Mt. Hebron several of my KAHN
family members are buried. The Corporations Dept.told me that the society
had liquidated its assets and all of the records had been transferred to
YIVO. I called YIVO and they did indeed have the records, which still need
to be catalogued and translated.

Searching SCHECHNER, EISNER Burykovka>NYC and Toronto #general

D. Abrams <dabrams1@...>

Searching info about or descendants of Lieb SCHECHNER and Pifa BRANA from
Burakuvka (or Buryakovka), Galicia who married in the mid 1800s. Their
children, all born in the same village, included Munisch (b. about 1855),
Selig (b. about 1868), Etta and Mirka who married a man named Yussel
FISHOFF.

Munisch married Leah ROSENBAUM and emigrated to the Bronx, NY in the early
1900 with their children Harry, Sadie, Fannie, Annie, Morris and Betty
SCHECHNER. The two boys became grocers and all the girls except Betty were
married to grocers.

Lieb and Pifa's daughter Etta SCHECHNER married a man named Josef GREENSPAN
in Burakuvka. About 1914 their daughter Sarah married Pinchas EISNER whose
descendants Lieb and Selig (Leon and Stanley) emigrated about 1949 to
Toronto where they still reside.

Does this village or these names ring any bells for anyone?

information on tombstones #general

Ben Saltman <bhsalt@...>

This is my first posting and I have just started my geneology search. The
inscription on my grandmother's tombstone, in Hebrew, in Los Angeles 1937,
refers to her father as "Rav." My Israeli son-in-law tells me that the
inscription is very traditional and "Rav" may be an honorary title and not
mean that he was a Rabbi. Could someone comment on this? Also where
could I best research this? I have no living relatives in my parents'
generation or older generation that I know of.

Thank you

Dreyfus Family #general

Henry Wellisch <Henry_Wellisch@...>

In the Canadian Jewish News there appeared recently a letter by a lady who
visited the grave of Captain Alfred Dreyfus in the Montparnass cemetery in
Paris. She writes as follows:

“As I read the inscription, I couldn’t help but notice an added
inscription:
A La Memoire de Madelaine Levy, Deportee par les Allemands, Disparue a
Auschwitz A L’age de 25 ans. I was immediately touched by the ironies of
life. Alfred Dreyfus who suffered such indignities >from anti-Semitism in
the late 1800s lost a loved one in Auschwitz years later. I wondered who
she was, a granddaughter perhaps?”

Does anyone of our French experts have the answer to this one?
