Re: Goldstein/Shonfeld #hungary

This reply presumes that Dudley Shonfeld lived and died in NY.

Since he was a person of some celebrity due to the Hauptman trial, I
would look at the index for obituaries which appeared in the NY Times.
Large libraries have this book in the reference section. If he had an
obituary, and it is a good bet that he did, descendants' names would be
listed.

This suggestion is in addition to the usual searches of vital records
and census materials.

Good luck, Debbi

Herb Weisberg <Weisberg.1@...>

Birth records exist in some areas through rabbi's listings. RAGAS found a
birth record, a circumcision record, death records, and a wedding record
in the "Rabbinates of Podolia province" in the Kamenets-Podolsky archive
in the Ukraine for the 1880s-1890s period. Amazing that they still exist
after all these years.

My other question is about birth records. My grandfather was born in
1889 in Nikolaeve in the Ukraine. Did they even keep birth records back
then and if so would they still be there and how would one obtain a
birth certificate if there is one.

Request information or links #general

I am a "newbie" to this so please have patience. I am requesting
information or links for the following family geneology. My
grandfather was Fredrick William OERTEL and I believe born in NYC, and
who's father had a cigar shop in the Bedford-Stiver area around 1890's.
Fred ran away for home, heading west to settle in Brighton, Il. in early
1900's. There he married and fathered 13 children. He was known as
"Chicken Oertel" as he reised and sold chickens and eggs, and worked as
a painter and farmer. He was alienated >from his family but my mother
remembered several family members living on Long Island, NY. I am
specifically researching that linage and any information regarding
temple or shul affiliation in NY. Thanks to all who respond.

The Somerset existed on Commonwealth Avenue at Charlesgate into the 1950s.
I attended a Boston University ROTC military ball there in 1951.
The hotel was bought by the Sonnabends, who used it as the nucleus of
something that became Sheraton Hotels. Sheraton headquarters, before the
merger with ITT, were on Atlanntic Ave. in Boston.

Kalvaria, now Kalvarija, Lithuania, was Kalwarja, Suwalki Guberniya, Russian
Poland administratively in Tsarist times, but was always "Litvak". It should
not be confused with Kalwarja Gora, Poland, which is nowhere near Kalvarija.
Both towns take their name >from Mt. Calvary in Jerusalem (the literal
translation of "Kalwarja Gora"), and Lithuanian Catholics have told me that
there is a shrine in Kalvarija with the stations of the cross.

that some (unspecified) information may soon be made available. Dozens if not
hundreds of us with obscure Kalvarija roots await this development eagerly....

Hebrew Translations #general

Gary Luke <feraltek@...>

In tracking the family of Abraham RHEUBENS, a convict sent to Hobart,
Australia in 1828, son of Reuben Rheubens, I've found a few other Rheubens
names in the Great Synagogue of London marriage records. The handwritten
Hebrew forms of their names are on the web page below. I would be very
thankful of any attempts at deciphering and transcribing the names of their
fathers.

They are all >from the LDS film #94666, marriages 1791-1865, with indexes.

Thank you for any help in this.

Passenger Arrival Soundex "CR#" #general

Dana H. Shultz <dhshultz@...>

On occasion, participants have asked about a U.S. Passenger Arrival Soundex
card that contains "CR#" followed by several digits rather than a reference
to page and line number of a passenger manifest. Unfortunately (for my
research), I have found out what this means:

"...there were many Immigrant arrivals to the United States prior to 1924
for whom the Immigration and Naturalization Service has no record. These
individuals made a legal inspected entry and had no status of a lawful
permanent resident.

"They were issued only copies of the Certificate of Registry as proof of
their legal entry and this service did not keep a record of these
issueance's [sic], hence there is no name on a manifest or any other proof
of their entry...."
