How about a traveler's check in Polish denomination? Triple A has
them for free, if you are a member.

Sending $ to Poland #general

Irene Newhouse <newhoir@...>

I haven't yet had the chance to try this out, but I found out about it
from soc.genealogy.slavic: there is a service called PEKAO that will
transfer dollars to Poland, they have a website at something fairly
obvious like www.pekao.com, though I wouldn't swear to it. A web search
should turn up the right URL if that's not it, PEKAO being a rather unique
string.

AVRACH: origin of name? #general

B M N <incomparable@...>

I am looking for the origin (derivation & meaning) of the surname AVRACH.
I checked a number of surname dictionaries, both Jewish and general, at
some local libraries, and have had no luck. Does anyone have some
information on this name?

Thanks.

Thanks to all the folks who replied to my query. My Puerto Rican friend
doesn't have any knowledge of Jewish heritage, but her surname is also one
often found among Sephardim and if her family is in fact of Jewish ancestry it
would be by way of Spain.

The price of visa for the FSU are pretty standard at $100-150US.

There are several daily trains >from Minsk to Grodno as well as a bus.

The train >from Poland takes several additional hours when crossing into the
FSU, as the guage on the rail cars in Europe/Eastern Europe are larger than
those in the former FSU, so the wheels on the cars must be changed at the
border.

I don't believe it is possible to rent a car. You may find an English
speaking guide with a car... gas stations, "rest stops" , etc. are few and far
between, and the roads are horrible.

I wouldn't believe every story I am told in the FSU about graft, corruption or
people being "liars"...

I do not personally (through my agency) recommend anyone going into an area
where there is no U.S. Embassy.

This is a very sad story. I knew him as a very nice, friendly
and honest person. I don't believe he really was involved in this
"shakher--makher". I remember him working hard on the restoration
of the Synagogue and Jewish Community in Grodno. He is a very old
man, he does not have children, what could be his reason for
corruption? At his age people usually think about their coming
visit to G-d, not about money... >>

Dear Yuri,
I have no idea whether Yuri Boyarski is corrupt or not. However, since
the restoration of the synagogue is mostly non-existent and because
he refuses access to the records of the Jewish community history, I
think we would be wise to withhold our judgment ...and any donations...
until the government investigation of the corruption charges against him
are finished. I understand that he is personally charming...Most con-men
are. Therefore, I await further developments.

Dear Carol and the rest of H-SIG,

Thank you very much for the great news about the
JewishGen/SIG archives. I've been looking forward to this
announcement and would like to congratulate and thank you
and your team on this stunning accomplishment.

For those of you who might not yet fully appreciate the
significance of this new feature in the way we communicate:
we now have full searching capability and can search through
the database of old postings (past July 1998) to H-SIG (and
all the other SIGs and JewishGen postings too) to find
articles on any particular "key word". This archiving
feature will be useful to new members as one can have access
to all knowledge previously created/shared in this forum
(after a certain date). An immediate consequence of this is
that I will now discontinue maintaining a list of past
postings of significance on our web site (though I'll
maintain our data). I'll also soon add a link to go
directly to the archives >from our webpage. I'm sure many of
us will use this feature constantly.

Thanks again.

Marc Polster,

Dennis Baer <dbaer@...>

I have forwarded this message >from the Mayor of Mukachevo, Ukraine
(formerly Munkacs, Hungary) for people to consider helping this community in
the Ukraine.

The reference of a management of city to world community !

The great damage caused by the flood made us to appeal to you
for an urgent help.As a result of lasting and heavy rainfalls, the
level of the water in the river Latoritsa raised to 6.87 m which is 1.32 m higher than the dam. A large part (2/3 of housing area) is in water. About two hundred families have lost their accommodation. The level of water in this area reaches 1.5 to 2 metres. The water supply system is destroyed. The total demage is about 19.5 million grivnyas.

We kindly ask you to help us.

Thank you in advance,

Sincerely yours,
