BREST FAMILY <angi@...>

Dear Jewishgenners

I am quoting my Greek friend who has once told me that Nitza is a Greek
Name, and it is usually a nickname for people called Eleni (Helen in
English) - ELENITZA and NITZA for short. I know a Greek girl and she is
also Nitza and her real name is Eleni (Helen).

Anne.

Fannie Kaplan #general

Don Gallard <dg2286@...>

I just discovered a heretofore unknown, to me, branch of the
Roitblatt(Rothblatt) family I am researching. I was told that the Fannie
(Fanya, Feige) Kaplan, who made an assassination attempt upon the life of
Lenin in 1918, was a Rothblatt by birth. The person who told this to me
was the daughter of the man who claimed to be Fannie's brother. He lived
to be 98 years old and told over the family lineage to his daughter
before he died.

She told me that her grandfather was a Hebrew teacher in Ovruch, Ukraine.
In searching the Internet concerning the incident, I found an entry
giving Fannie's maiden name as Feiga Khaimovna Roitman and saying that
she was >from the Ukraine and that her father was a Jewish teacher. Later
in the article it states that when she was arrested she gave her name as
Fanya Efimovna Kaplan.

How to explain the inconsistency between our family name, Roitblat, and
Roitman? Also the little I know about Russian nomenclature leads me to
believe that Khaimovna means that her father's name was Chaim. What
would the Efimovna mean? I was told that, if she is indeed a Roitblat
from our family, her father's name would have been Feivel.
If anyone can shed some light on this or knowns more about this, I would
love to hear >from you.

Dear JewishGenner's

Not to long ago, one of the members was trying to make contact with Ellis
Island and was unable to contact them. I received the following reply which
includes a phone number.

Regards,

Jeanne

Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 13:48:50 -0500
From: Peg Zitko <pr@ellisisland.org>

Please forgive the delay in this response but we receive hundreds of
emails daily
and are trying our best to catch up.
We certainly do respond to email questions as best we can. Or
if the members prefer they can call the Foundation at 212-883-1986.
At times we fall behind due to large volumes of email, but we always
answer the emails eventually.
Hope this helps address your concerns.

I have encountered the same difficulty reading the 1897-1902 ship
passenger indices at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. In fact, I
was hoping that the quality of the microfilm at the New York Public
Library would be better! On occasion, I have been able to decipher the
information by greatly enlarging the image or switching to a microfilm
reader with a super-bright light bulb.

Re: What does given name "Lerle" translate to? #general

Dick Plotz

What was the original source for this name "Lerle"? If it was a document
handwritten in German script, the transcriber might have confused uppercase
"B" and "L". Would "Berle" make sense for this name?

==In Schwyzerduetsch Loerle or Lerle means "rude person." (Chaibish Loerle)

I doubt this would be the origin.

Until someone comes up with more knowledge: Lerle could be a nickname for
a teacher (Lehrer) and thus could be given to someone with the Hebrew name
Melamed (teacher). More likely, it's a nickname for someone whose name
ended in . . . . ler, or . . . . lerle. I can't think of any such name
offhand, but it could be >from a corruption of Lezer (Eliezer) or similar
corruption.

Several years ago I had an inquiry >from Mark S. Hoffrichter regarding his and
my Silverman Families but we could not find a fit at that time. I recently
discovered some information which may be of interest to him (and me, too) and
I wrote to Mark at the Manhattan, NYC address I had in my files. The letter
has been returned. Does anyone out there know where I can find Mark S.
Hoffrichter who used to live in NYC? Ask him to get in touch with me at:
