I DID have the URL right: http://www.pekao.com. They redid their layout
since the last time I checked, the company is called Pekao Trading
Corporation & has offices in NY, NJ, the Chicago area & headquarters in
Los Angeles. None of which prevents it >from being a subsidiary of another
company.

Ellis Island Project update #general

Steven Chall <steven.chall@...>

Today's (12 Nov) newspaper carried an Associated Press release about the
American Family Immigration History Center to be established at Ellis
Island. In brief summary:
Center opening is planned for 2000 with only 35 terminals available. No
mention in this release about remote access although a private
communication >from the Ellis Island PR department indicated that remote
access was being considered.
Ellis Island Immigration records for 1892-1924 are being transcribed by
LDS, currently about 2/3rds complete. Data may be limited to ships'
passenger manifests copied >from NARA plus pictures of ships. Name
searches will be possible using a Soundex.

Strange given name #general

Josephine Rosenblum <jorose@...>

This is for a friend who does not use Internet but has e-mail.

Her grandmother's death certificate (died in Cincinnati) is typed clearly.
On it, her mother (my friend's great-grandmother) is listed with a given
name of "S L I A N G E L" [I typed this name in all capitals to make it
clearer]. Sliangel does not seem to be a valid given name, so my friend
wonders if it could be Szolange (which looks Hungarian) or Solange or even
Selina or Zerline. [Of couse, it *could* be Elizabeth or Monica or Janet,
but what are the most likely possibilities?] The woman was born in
Austria-Hungary in the time period 1820-40.

If you have any suggestions, please reply privately to
<SallyRSmith@compuserve.com>.

NARA staff personnel in Washington offered me the use of yellow
and green sheets of plastic which when placed over the screen
made the text more readable. You might try that technique.

ISRAELI GEOGRAPHY #general

IsraelP <p2o5rock@...>

We have a listing in 1937 for a woman whose residence
in "Shekhunat Schein." A quick glance at city maps
shows no such neighborhood in any large city today
and phone calls to the city archives in Jerusalem,
Haifa and Tel-Aviv just get blank stares. There is
no Schein in the Encyclopedia Judaica to give a
clue.

So does anyone know in which city there was (or is)
a neighborhood called Shekhunat Schein?
