To Belarus SIG and Rav Eliyahy Tavger,

With reference to the below message, I would like alert all you Lepel

I would like to include your information in that page and also any other

On August 31, I visited Lepel with two of my friends.

In the town there is a big Jewish cemetery, located in the woods on the edge
of the lake. It is told that a third of it flooded when a dam was built on
the river and the lake expanded. The cemetery is not fenced off, and the
older part is very uncared for. The cars which travel next to the edge of
the lake are riding right on the gravestones. The newer graves take up a
small part of the area.

Today there are 38 old Jewish people left, and we met with two of them. We
asked them to prepare for us a detailed map and list of the cemetery. It was
done in a very organized and dedicated manner. This list includes family
names, first names and father's names as well as dates of birth and death.

Below are all the family names >from the list (all the names have been
changed to the masculine).

SHTEINGARDT, REICHELSON, MAIMAN, GUKOVICH, SOLOMONOV, YANOVITZKY,
DVEIYERMAN, OKSENTZOV, AMCHIR, BORD, FEIGELMAN, CHAZAN, SON, GLAZMAN,
YUDOVIN, RUCHMAN, SIGALOV, KRUPTELKIN, LUCHTER, ZELDIN, BEILINSON, ANIKUL,

SLEPCHONOK, POLAK, SLAVIN, LIBIN, KATZ, MANEVITCH, LEVITAN, MALKIN, GITLIN,
PLAVNIK, BENSMAN, POGREBINSKY, STESIN, LIGUM, SARASHEVSKY,
MODERATOR'S NOTE: I checked out Joel's Shtetlinks page on Lepel and
I encourgage everyone else to do likewise. I hope that more of you will
develop Shtetlink pages for your shtetls. Perhaps, groups who are
researching the same shtetls could team up to do a Shtetlink page.
Perhaps Joel and Rav Eliyahy Tavger can work together to expand the content
of the Lepel page and perhaps have some appropriate photographs that
Rav Eliyahy took on his trip.

Bernard Levy <Bernie-Levy@...>

Ken,

I finally found and read some of Gary Mokotoff's "Where Once We Walked"
and in the front section, pages xxvi - xxviii, were 3 maps of Central &
Eastern Europe. They showed the countries and their outlines and major
cities "Before World War I", "Between the Wars", and "Today" (as of
publication), respectively. Perhaps that will do?

Published Family Histories - Useful Sites #general

Ellis R. & Jana M. Jackson <erjackson@...>

Shirley and all.

This is the Jewish Publication Society of America. Perhaps they can help
http://www.feduja.org/commserv/organize/0536.stm

You can find this, and *a lot* of other helpful sites at
http://www.feduja.org/commserv/orgname.stm
which, I believe is part of the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto. It also
has link to the Cemetery Project, and on that page one can find lists of
Jewish Cemeteries.

It is worth a look.
