Re: The name Yankel #general

If ever you have needed a reason to read through all the correspondence,
I have quite accidentally found one. Sometimes we don't know enough to
ask the right questions. I have been struggling the past few weeks to
fit a Jacob that I found in the 1920 census into my family tree. I had
just about given up when, quite by chance I read David Ziants reply to a
question and there right in front of me was the answer I had been
seeking. Jacob was my grandfather's uncle Yankel.

So thank you for a job well done and thank you for helping even when I
didn't know I needed it.

I think Yankel is Yiddish for Jacob, .... Snipped ....
Yankel is indeed a Yiddish possibility for Jacob.
In Hebrew, the name is Ya'akov which is spelt: Yud, 'Ayin, Kuf, Bet .

Disappearance of Frank DEUTSCH #general

Henry Wellisch <Henry_Wellisch@...>

My mothers brother Ferencz (Ferdinand) Deutsch emigrated to the US
around 1907, was living in New York, and working as a baker. Around
1928 he disappeared and has never been heard of again. He was a
bachelor and I located him in the 1920 US census under the name of
FRANK DEUTSCH, NY,75 West 14th Street. Under "Citizenship" the
census form states 1908 Al. Does this mean that in 1920 he was still
an alien? If he had applied for citizenship where would I have to
look? I understand that there exists a 1925 NY State census which is
available >from the Mormons. Is this census indexed? I did receive
from the NY Dept. of Health the death record of a Frank Louis
Deutsch, but this was not my uncle. Where else can I look?

Searching BRENNER from Los Angeles, Boston,- and Johannesburg South Africa #general

sal25 <sal25@...>

Sisters Jenny Snyder and Anna Glazer came to US >from Vilna or thereabouts.
They settled in Boston around 1891. Their maiden name was BRENNER.
They had 2 brothers Adolph and Harry who settled in Los Angeles.

They had another brother, first name unknown, who went to Johannesburg,
Union of South Africa. The family story goes that he became a diamond
merchant and was killed.

I believe my gm Anna's mother's name was Hannah.

They had other BRENNER relatives in Boston. One was in the band at the old
Fox and Hounds Club. Another BRENNER woman worked in the Sonnabend real
estate office.

If you have any info and/or think you are related, e-mail me.

Pushalotter #general

Rachel Heimovics <rachelheimovics@...>

There used to be an organization in Jacksonville, Florida, called the
Pushalotter Relief Society.

Does anyone know what the homeland might have been and where? The common
thought is that it was in Lithuania.

I have looked to no avail in the JewishGen Shetl finder and in a book about
landsmanshaften organizations.

Re: Melnitsas #general

Dear People,

In his message of November 18, 1998, (#18) Leonard Fletcher asked about
the towns of Melnitsas and Kiriotz. So far I've found nothing about Kiriotz,
unless this is a spelling variant for the shtetl Korets (or Korets, for which
there is a Yizkor book.)

But for Melnitsas I found that in Kugelman's and Boyarin's ">from a Ruined
Garden" that other spellings for it are "Melnitza," "Melnitsah (Y)," and
"Mielnica (P)." There is a Yizkor book for the shtetl called"
Melnitsah, pelakh Volyn-Ukrainah: sefer hantsaahah,'edut ve-zikaron le-
kehilat Melnitsah (Melnitza [Melnitza: in memory of the Jewish community) Ed.
Joshua Liot, Tel Aviv: Melnitza FUrviors in Istrael and Diaspora, 1994:276 pp.
with illlustrations, maps, fascimiles) in Hebrew, Yiddish and English.

Melnitsa is in the Tarnopol area. Its coordinates can be found more
accurately in the ShtetlSeeker than on my map.

KLASS 1920 - Help in Chicago IL requested #general

Aubrey Jacobus <aubrey@...>

I would be happy to do reciprocal work in London for help in Chicago.

I have got good data on a KLASS family who were in Chicago 1920 .
-- I am completely unable to find the name of the father of the family head
.
The first child was born May 1 1915 of I guess marriage was 1914 but am told
US marriage cert give no parental detail ( unlike UK ) -and I dont know a
death date.
The family head was born Russia/Poland and I thought to check naturalisation
if I knew how . Was there an Aliens Reg in IL in WW1 ??

Ternopil is in the Ukraine. The parts I saw briefly were depressing and
run-down, as is much (not all) of the Ukraine. I passed through on the
way to Czernowitz (Chernivtsi) this past July, '98.

Fw: tracing place of birth #general

Tatiana Kotlyar <kotlyar@...>

Yesterday I send the message mentioned below but there was a mistake in =
one of the family name: it should be read as BORUKHOVICH

We are trying to trace the places of birth for the following people:
Uri KASELY, born in 1917
Sara EBN,born in 1923
Motl OLIVENSHTEJN, born in 1919
Khava BORUCHOVICH, born in 1922
All of them were born in Ukraine.
As we know definite family names were common for definite regions.
Any ideas and information would be appreciated.
