Hi,

I just wanted to observe that my gfather was named Anshel, which was his
Yiddish name. His Hebrew name was Usher. He was called Anshel Usher, but
referred to as Anshel in all correspondance. Your spelling and mine might not
be similar, but Horodenka was not far >from Rusow, and my uncle married a young
lady >from Horodenka in 1880, and lived in Rusow, which is 5km >from Snyatyn.

Hope this has helped.

What are the Revision Lists? When you say the vilna archives do you mean
something in Vilnius or something online?

We the (LITVAK SIG) received a complete copy of the 1858 Revision List for the Uyezd of Oshmyany which includes both Oshymany and Smorgan (in addition to other towns).
The Revision Lists need to be translated, and will be put up on the web.

Dear Steve,

I couldn't help but notice on one of your e-mails the expression, "it's

expression my grandfather used to say, "work makes life sweet." Is this
expression something common to the Jewish culture? My grandfather SRUL

Thank you.

Searching HENDEL #general

LASSER3 <LASSER3@...>

Searching for information on David HENDEL, son of Yitzchak Yakov
Hendel and Feige, brother of Dina Ruchel Hendel, who married Milton
(Menachem Mendel) NOWADWARSKI. Dina Ruchel was one of my great-
grandmothers. They are all of Polish origin.

David probably immigrated to the US about the turn of the century.
He may have lived in New York. David had a daughter Lee (Leah?)
who married Harold WEISS. They may have lived in Brooklyn, but have
been deceased for about 20 years. Harold and Lee used to visit our
mutual relatives in Chicago, Sam and Lena TORNHEIM.

If any one knows about these people, please contact me privately.

Allan -

Did you send me some emails over the past week regarding the Goodman Family.
My name is Richard Sinykin. My hard drive crashed and I lost all of my emails
over the past two weeks.

To jog your memory, my great-great grandfather was Louis "Leib" Goodman of
Kamanets Podolskij, Russia. He may have been a brother to the chief rabbi in
Kamanets Podolsk. I do not know for sure. Leib married Lena Dockman and they
had the following children - Jacob (my great-grandfather), Samuel, Anna, Clara,
Jennie, and Sarah.

They were all born inKamanets Podolsk and immigrated through New York circa
1889.

Please resend any of your past emails regarding the Goodman connection. Sorry

Re: synagogue marriages in England #general

Nick Landau <nick@...>

The current situation regarding all weddings in the UK is to be found
in this website:

http://www.weddings.co.uk/info/england.htm

Now it is possible to have a civil service in all manner of venues eg a
football stadium but this is a recent innovation. I believe that one of
the few or only groups allowed to have a wedding in the open until recently
were the Jews.

I am fairly certain that before these changes that the option was either to
get married in a registry office (civil) or to marry under a religious
denomination.

My feeling is that if a denomination was not registered for marriages that
the couple would have to marry in a registry office and then presumably
have their own ceremony later on in their religious premises. Otherwise
there would have been no possibility for new denominations to arise able to
carry out their own services. They clearly would not emerge fully fledged
ready to carry out authorised marriage services.

I would imagine that hardly anybody knows about the law except marriage
secretaries. In the United Synagogues the minister is often the marriage
secretary and would know the law.
It is quite likely that most of the unregistered weddings are carried out
by people ignorant of the law. In my experience synagogue executives do
not want to do anything illegal and so do not allow unregistered weddings
to take place in their sybaggoues. If you belong to a synaggoue of any
denomination ask the marrriage secretary to check his handbook for you.
The situation with non-registered place of worships is that they arrange
for a marriage regisitrar to be present.
