Finding Old Country residences #general

Sallyann Sack <sallyannsack@...>

Dear Colleagues,

How many of you still cannot determine exactly which was your immigrant
ancestor's residence in the Old Country?

I would be grateful if those who are stymied would write to me privately
(and I will try to help).

Re: Police Chief, Linden NJ #general

Stewart Levy <srlevy@...>

I am familiar with 2 Rodman Families >from Canton, Ma., about 12 miles from
Boston. I grew up with both of them. One owned Rodman Ford in Foxboro Ma
and had 3 or 4 children. I remember only the names of two - Curt and Gene.
The other Rodman family (related to the first) were neighbors of mine.
William and Johanna. They had two sons, Mark and Peter. They now live in
Boca Raton, or Delray Beach, FL.

Hope this helps.

Guberniya and uyezd differences #belarus

<Can someone explain the difference between a guberniya and an Uyezd. Is

A guberniya is a province - similar to a state. An uyezd is a district,
similar to a county within a state. Vilna guberniya had seven uyezds in it
during the 19th century and all but two of these are now in Belarus - but
their revision list records are still in the Vilnius State Historical
Archives. A typical uyezd had 16-18 major towns or Jewish communities in it.

Uyezd is pronounced OO-YES-ED or OO-YEZD.

Jewish Farmers in New Jersey #general

cbishoes <cbishoes@...>

For those of you who are looking for relatives who may have farmed in
southern New Jersey, Morris and Helen Ostroff of Rosenhayn, New Jersey,
are co-curators of the Garton Road Synagogue, now a library and archive
of Jewish life in the Vineland area of New Jersey. Morris was and still
might be a farmer. Both Ostroffs knew many families in the area. I do
not have a phone number for them or for the Synagogue, but if you phone
Jack Shortledge, director of the Down Jersey Folklife Center at Wheaton
Village, he will have that information.
Good luck.

Searching: BASSEIN/BASHEIN/BASEIN, Borisov, Minsk, possibly other
locations in Minsk gubernia.

* Terezin - list of intelectuals #hungary

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Hello all,

I just stumbled in a site which carries a very extensive list of lecturers
who were deported to Terezin, later to Auschwitz. Please go to:

http://www.sharat.co.il/lel/terezin/list.htm

Sad as it is, it may contain a name some of you were looking for. May their
souls rest in Peace.

This article I found on the internet contains a gold mine of notes and
citations >from books and other publications relating to the Jewish
immigrant farming experience throughout much of America. Any researcher
on this subject should find this bibliography to be a useful source for
leads on information.

The American Jewish Archives website has an article titled " Jewish> Immigrant Farmers in the Connecticut Valley: The Rockville Settlement"

New Info File on Jewish Genealogy in Posen #general

Steven Fischbach <fischri@...>

Subject: New Info-File on Jewish Genealogy in Posen

I just finished writing an info-file on Jewish Genealogical Research in the
former Prussian Province of Posen. JewishGen has graciously published it
on its website. The info-file contains links to several web-sites
(including archives, maps, telephone directories, etc.), a short
bibliography, and some information on the organization of Jewish
communities in Posen. I suspect that researchers interested in
German-Jewish or Polish Jewish genealogy outside of Posen will also find
the info-file to be of interest. To access the info-file follow the
following link:

http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/PosenResources.html

Feel free to send me any comments, criticisms, additions, corrections, etc.

And Happy New Year to all.

Seeking info about Jozefow nad Wisla, Poland #general

Helen Banks <neshaverX@...>

Hello

I have been enthusiastically following JewishGen's excellent web page
building course and am in the process of making ShtetLinks pages for Jozefow
nad Wisla, where my grandmother was born. I live in Cornwall, UK and I
don't have access to the Encyclopedia Judaica or any sources of information
about the history of this shtetl to put on my pages, although I have found
an entry about its cemetery. I have looked everywhere on JewishGen and also
searched the internet, with little success.

Jozefow nad Wisla, according to ShtetlSeeker, is 90.5 miles SSE of Warsaw.
It is 10 miles south-west of Opole Lubelskie, south of Kazimierz Dolny
(south of Pulawy), about 30 miles west-south-west of Lublin.

I shall be very grateful for any information or photographs of Jozefow, old
or new, or any URLs for information in English. Please see my entry in the
JGFF under #8498.

Please note that the X in my address needs to be removed if you reply to me.
Thank you.

Best wishes
