Cemetary in Cotopaxi, CO #general

Janette Silverman <jsilverman@...>

A friend asked me to pose this question to the group - she travels
through Cotopaxi, CO several times a year and has visited a cemetery
there which houses what appears to be a mass grave and is labeled "Jews
from Russia" or something similar. Does anyone know what happened
here? Cotopaxi I think is near Leadville.

Thanks

The ship manifest lists the family's place of origin
as "Pruzany, Poland." In searching the JewishGen
shtetl seeker, I found a few towns that might be the
one the KRUGMANs came from. Most notable, Pyrzany
(coord 52 39' 14 58') and Pierzyny (coord 51 17' 18
57).

But then I did a search on KRUGMAN in the SIG archives
and found another researcher looking for KRUGMANs in a
town called Pruzhany (near Shereshevo) in Belarus. In
the past, I've (foolishly) limited my KRUGMAN search
to Poland, but I cannot ignore the similarities here.

My question to the group is this: was the town of
Pruzhany, in modern day Belarus (in the Brest region)
at coord 52 33' 24 28', located in Poland in the early
1900s? I'm sure there's some website with this info,
but I haven't been able to find it.

Pruzhany are indeed located in Belarus at 5233 2428. This town had preWWII
4,152 Jewish population (out 6,332 general population).

Town was also known by its other names: Pruzana, Pruzin, Pruzhani and a few
other Yiddish?Rusian and Polish spelling variations. Pruzhany was Russian
and Belarussian town name. Polish town name was Pruzana in Polesie Province,
and it was known as this during the interwar period.
Please refer to Pruzana data in 1929 Poland Business Directory.

http://data.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/1929/loadtop.htm?1101

Poland did not exist as the political entity till 1918. This region was part
of Russian Empire, but historically it was part of Poland, and became again
part of the reborn nationhood after WWI.

There are 217 entries for town Pruzhany in JGFF database.

Please visit Belarus SIG in JewishGen site to learn more about Pruzhany

Cemetery photos Jekabpilks #courland #latvia

I commissioned Aleksandrys Feigmanis (a few years ago) to take
photos of the cemetery stones in the Jekabpils cemetery. I am happy
to report that I have scanned all the photos and they can now be
viewed online at
http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/
All you need to do is put in either a first name or surname and the
search engine will find the record. You will get hits in all
the cemeteries where the name appears. You need to click the hit that
brings up Courland because Jekabpils was in Courland.
If you then click "see full burial record" you will see the tombstone
and can zoom in and out and pan the stone. Some of the stones may not
be in a good condition but I am pleased that the majority have
writing that can be read.
We are very grateful to Aleks for doing the photography and to
Jewishgen for giving you the opportunity to view your ancestors
tombstones online.
I am sorry it has taken me so long to get them on the web for you but
I am sure you will appreciate it has been a big job scanning nearly
400 photos and seeing that they match with the data already submitted.

Leib Gefanowitz was a ''macher'' in the Bnei Tzion movement in the fifties
and together with Dudi Gordon, and the other Dudi now on moshav Orot near
kastina, and Errol Hofman (an electronics expert now in Yokniam Elit), and
Joey, were all early members of Kibbuts Hasollelim (I too was there in the
late 50's)

Leonard Gafanovitz changed his name to Leib Gefen when he made aliyah about
30 years ago. I am sure that Telfed can give you his address.

Someone gave me a family tree for the GAFANOVICH family who became GEFEN in
South Africa. Josel ben Nokhim-David GAFANOVICH came to SA and settled in
Wellington/Paarl. His wife was Sora-Feiga KLING.

I am actually interested in locating the family of Sora-Feiga's uncle
Iosel-David Kling and his children Borukh-Shmuel Kling and Movsha-Girsha
Kling. The third brother Leiser Kling went to Israel.

The families came to SA >from Kupiskis, Vabalninkas and Panevezys.

Thanks,
