Re: Lost family - Upstate PA & NYC #general

DAVID SNYDER <ds66@...>

I am desperately seeking any information or leads about "lost" cousins
of my grandmother who were living somehwere in upstate Pennsylvania
before WWII. Their name was BORNSTEIN (perhaps they used the spelling
BERNSTEIN). I know there were some BORNSTEIN siblings in New York
(Brooklyn) and my grandmother in Philadelphia - Tillie BORNSTEIN
SNYDERMAN (1879, Kanev district, Kiev gubernia - 1941, Phila.), as well
as a BORNSTEIN Aunt Sarah and her daughter Anna in Philadelphia and
another uncle (perhaps Sam BORNSTEIN) who was a barber in south
Philadelphia. The parnet of my grandmother and her sibling were
Mordechai Motyl & Bune BORNSTEIN - who never immigrated to the USA.
Anyone with any information leads about BORNSTEINS >from upstate
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia or Brooklyn - please be so kind as to contact
me privately.

rabbinic families are easier to trace (at least in the direct male line)

I recently was perusing microfilm of Kurima, in today's Slovakia. I
recognized my great, grandmother's name on a page entitled "Kivonat." I
checked a Hungarian dictionary but could not find such a word. I
assume then
that It is probably Slovak. Does anyone know what "Kivonat" means?

Kivonat refers to an extract, abstract, summary, abridgement, outline.
Most likely, this word appeared with

szuletesi or anyakonyvi kivonat
if so, than you have a birth certificate.

From:Wayne Roth, Brooklyn, New York
I assume then that It is probably Slovak. Does anyone know what "Kivonat" means?

mod.- Many of you responded to Waynes' request. I have passed along only three of most complete or earliest responses. Why in the world would you think the word is Slovak? Yes, Kurima is in today's Slovakia somewhat midway between Bardejov & Medzilaborce, but Slovakia and for that matter Czechoslovakia is a political phenonemon of twentieth century nationalism. Tamas Stern a newly graduated physician currently living in Bratislava has photographed all the Jewish tombstones in that village. LS

A friend of mine has found his ancestor's birth record of 1875, for
Dorogha'za, Hungary. It's 69 km. S/SW of Miskolc. Does anyone know
in what county this place was, then and now? Anyone know anything =

about the place? I do know >from WOWW that 4 Jews lived there in 1938.

Thanks in advance.
