Re: Searching: KATZ Brooklyn Naturalization Records #general

AvrmGeller <avrmgeller@...>

I suggest you determine the year of naturalization by locating the
person(s) in the 1920 and/or 1910 Federal census which indicates the year
naturalized. The address of the person(s) when naturalized is also useful-
->from either a Federal or NY State census year or the City Directory for
that year. I think you would need this since Katz is such a common name.
I have also tried to find Brooklyn naturalizations (so far, to no avail);
the naturalizations are located in a basement room of the County Clerk's
Office, State Supreme Court, 360 Adams St, Brooklyn 11201 (718-643-5894).
There are bound index books grouped by year and then within the books
alphabetized by surname. The day I went there the index volume I needed
(1912) was missing ("in the bindery") and I will need to return. It is
also possible that the naturalization was done in a U.S. District Court, in
which case the indices can be searched at a U.S. National Archives or
Mormon Family History Center location. I would imagine that there are so
many Katz's in Brooklyn in any given year, even many with the same given
name, and that you would need an address etc. to pin down the right one.
I suggest you nail down all the facts you can and then give them a call. I
believe the cost for a search is $5.00.

Hebrew name - Britel #general

HOWARD ZINN <zeeman@...>

While researching a branch of one of my family trees, I came across the
Hebrew name of one of my relatives. I have never heard of this name before
and I am curious to find out more about it. Can anyone give me any
information on the Hebrew first name of Britel?

Pioneer Progressive Society #general

Brichg@...

Hi,
My gf is buried at Old Montefiore Cemetary in Queens. His burial society
is listed as, the Pioneer Progressive Society. An old letter referred to
his "Lodge", would this society be that lodge? Also, does anyone know
about this society, where they were >from etc. My gf, Abraham Kleinman came
from Augustow/Suwalki, we think. He was in the live poultry business on
Jefferson St., the lower east side & later had a business on Junius St. in
Brooklyn. He died in 1943.

As the story goes, he was a respected man of the community. Maybe one of
you out there may know something of the poultry business at that time.
Thanks Much,
Betsy Rich Gilon

Are there any Jewish Genners in the Twin Cities area who can look up
Anna CARNIS, Bertha B. CARNIS and Mike and Yetta CARNIS in the Polk
Directories for St. Paul, MN, for the years 1910-1924 or thereabouts?
I'd be willing to repay with similar research in the Denver, CO, area.

Chuck Adams <adams@...>

I'd like a translation of Abraham MANHART'S 1933(?) Polish
Manuscript re Zionism by Ruth MANHART Adams, daughter

Professional translators contacted were too expensive for us.

Grave locations #general

Gailcopela@...

I have a piece of paper on which is written the location of a grand-aunt's
grave in London (possibly Edmonton Cemetery). It reads: Block IT, Row 5, Wo
39.

I know what a "block" is, what a "row" is, but what does the "wo" refer to?
This information was written down by my grandfather some 70 years ago; his
handwriting was quite good. Oh, as I think about it, would the "wo" refer
to the actual plot number within the row within the block? And if so, what
is "wo" short for? Please reply privately. Thanks.

I ran into this sort of thing recently. I asked for three specific
documents I knew [a particular information source] had. They gave me these
three pieces of information, yes, and then about 15 more pieces of
information -- and billed me for the lot! I was unhappy, because some of
it was duplicative of documents I already had -- in fact, documents I had
asked for a few months before >from the same place. I gave them my e-mail
address, address, and phone number (and yes, they do have e-mail and use
it, so they could have e-mailed me at no cost to them), so they could have
at least confirmed that I wanted all this stuff before they hunted it all
up, photocopied it, and mailed it to me.

I still have the bill, but haven't acted on it. I feel bad that I haven't
immediately paid up (which is what I did when I asked them for some
documents before), but I have been avoiding the unpleasantness of haggling
with them over the bill. Ugh.
