Re: Obtaining Passports In Galicia 100 Years Ago #galicia

Wildpom@...

My questions are as follows:

1. What were the requirements in terms of documentation?
2. Other than a birth certificate, was additional proof of identity
needed?
3. If a person did not have a copy of their birth certificate was
there another type of document acceptable as a "proof of identity"?
4. Where did one go to apply for a passport?
5. How long did it take to receive a passport?
6. For what length of time was a passport valid?
7. What did it cost?
8. What type of rules and regulations were there?
9. If a Jewish individual wanted to change their surname in Galicia,
was this legally permitted?
10. And finally, if someone did not legally change their surname in
Galicia but chose the method of being "also known as" (a.k.a.)
for most of their adult lifetime, could they have shown papers
using their "a.k.a." as a form of documentation in applying for a
passport?

Research Materials for 1999 Conference in NYC #general

Lew Norman <lewnorman@...>

The Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc., will host the 19th Annual
Conference on Jewish Genealogy in New York City, August 8 - 13, 1999.
A highlight of the Conference will be the Resource Room located at the
Conference hotel. In addition to providing the Conference attendees with
an "on-site" basic research library, the Resource Room will showcase the
numerous research projects compiled by Jewish genealogists throughout the
world. The Resource Room Committee is currently soliciting contributions
of Genealogical materials which would be useful and informative to the
Conference attendees, especially materials which are unique or unusual.
In particular, the Committee is requesting printed copies of indexes,
databases, unpublished manuscripts and private collections, in addition to
commercially published books and maps. Many Jewish genealogists have
compiled information >from and about local cemeteries, synagogues, Jewish
newspapers, public records and other sources, to use as research aids.
Although some of these resources have made their way into various
publications or databases on the Internet, many have not been published,
making the Resource Room at the 1999 Conference the perfect place for their
public debut.

All materials loaned to the Resource Room must be in appropriate printed
form and will be returned immediately after the Conference has ended. If
you are interested in contributing materials to the Resource Room, please
send a list identifying and describing those materials to the Resource Room
Committee c/o Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc., 600 West End Avenue, Suite
10F, New York, NY, 10024, or by email at "lewnorman@aol.com." The Resource
Room Committee will contact all potential contributors regarding the
necessary arrangements to obtain the materials prior to the Conference and
to return them afterwards. Please be assured that appropriate security
measures will be taken to protect all loaned materials and the Conference
will accept responsibility for their safekeeping. Any further inquiries
should be addressed to the Resource Room Committee at the above postal or
email address.

The name: "Shulie" #general

cbishoes <cbishoes@...>

I hope that I won't be repeating a topic that has been discussed to
death. I have had my grandmother's collection of postcards (in Russian)
translated into English. In several the writer asks her about a person
named "Shulie." It is likely that all of these writers were primarily
Yiddish speakers. Does anybody out there know what other names Shulie
might refer to?
Thanking you in advance.

New York area cemeteries #general

Shirley Wilets

Searching for the Gomel Chesed Cemetery in which my father's cousins are
interred according to an obituary of 1983 in the Elizabeth, New Jersey's
Daily Journal.
The name doesn't show up on the list of cemeteries in the New York City
area. I'm wondering if it is a section in a cemetery.

Would appreciate any helpful suggestions.

Thank you in advance.

Re: deportation of Jews from France #general

BetteJoy <bettejoy@...>

Most of the French Jews were sent to Auschwitz where they perished.
Others >from the south of France were also sent to Vilna, Lithuania
where they were imprisoned in the primitive Ninth Fort until their
murder in the nearby forests. In the Ninth Fort one can see messages
that they scratched into the cement walls prevailing upon the Jewish
people to REMEMBER.
