Oshmaner Brothers Society #general

Sheldon Clare <clare+@...>

Is there anyone who knows if the Oshmaner Brothers Society still
exists? My grandmother Rivka Kaminsky GORZEN is buried in their plot on
Mt. Judah cemetery in Brooklyn, NY and the plot is in deplorable
condition.
I spoke with the cemetery office who gave me a name of a gentleman. When
I spoke with him, he complained that he was too sick to take care of the
problem.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Searching SHEINBERG from Lipno, Poland #general

Frieda Libaw <fbl2@...>

I have a 29 page typescript written in Yiddish by Moishe SCHEINBERG
titled, "Memories of Lipno" which I believe were meant to be a
contribution to a planned Yizkor book on Lipno, Poland. I have
completed an English translation (except for a few Hebrew words and
phrasesI

In this memoir it is clear that I am a relative of Moishe SHEINBERG.
His grandmother was my mother's mother's sister. My mother's mother was
Rifka GOLDSTEIN, nee LACHS or LACHS, married to Joel-Wolf GOLDSTEIN, and
the daughter of Moishe LACHS, for whom the author of this memoir was
named.

If any of this strikes a chord with any jewishgenner out there, please
contact me.

Incidentally, I've been in touch with the jewishgen Manager of Yizkor
book translations and will get the copy out to anyone interested as soon
as possible - but it may take a while.

Thanks in advance. Frieda Libaw

Re: First Class Passenger Immigrant Question #general

Bobmar37

When I visited Ellis Island several years ago, I learned that first and second
class passengers were dropped off in Manhattan before ships left the others
at Ellis Island. Some who were rejected at Ellis Island returned home and
saved up enough money for a second class fare so they could return and avoid
the scrutiny at Ellis Island.

The entire immigration >from the Russian Empire in 1880-1910 years counted
about 2 million people. It was almost pure Jewish immigration - more then
80% immigrant each year were Jews. Before 1880 this percent was around
10%, after 1910 percent fall to 30...50%. That time Russian Empire
included Poland and Finland.

Need Help with Research in Pyetrykau, Belarus #general

Ricki L. Zunk <rickiz@...>

I have finally learned of the birthplace of my father's mother. She was
Basja FRIEDMAN, and she was born in Pyetrykau which is now in Belarus.

She arrived in the Port of NYC on October 28, 1912, aboard the SS Czar,
alone. And went to live with "landtsmen" in Brooklyn, NY.

She left her parents, and one brother (that we know of) behind in
Pyetrykau. Her parents were: Aaron FRIEDMAN (a riverboat captain) and
Faga SCHNIEDERMAN. Her brother was David FRIEDMAN. Since my pgm could
not read or write, she had no contact with her family in Pyetrykau. She
also kept nothing of an informative nature about her past, except for a
photograph of her mother and father.

My father has always hoped that perhaps someone >from the family in
Russia may have survived and lived to have descendants. Unfortunately,
with FRIEDMAN being such a common name, I have not been able to get any
leads at all on what may have happened to the family.

Is there anyone reading this post who knows of anyone >from the town of
Pyetrykau or anything about the town (I already know where it is located
-- I need more information)?

I hope someone can help me with this one.

Thanks,
(Mrs.) Ricki Randall Zunk

re Steamship Arrival Dates #general

Carol Skydell <skydell@...>

Cindy asks:

.... does anyone know which would be more accurate, the INS index cards or
Cimorelli?

Cimorelli uses Morton Allan Directory of European Passenger Ship Arrivals
to create it's database. Morton Allan is known to be off in some cases,
and by as much as a week. Go with what the INS provided, it's probably a
safer bet.
