Searching the geneology of the Goil'm from Prague #general

David Ziants <davidz@...>

Wish to find out about the ancestry of the 16th century, "Goil'm from
Prague", and whether this illustrious figure left any descendants.

General geneological information will no doubt be of interest to the
group, but if you think you are related, please respond privately!! (I am
definitely not related, but am just interested to know whether anyone is.)

Wishing everyone a happy Purim.

Where is Amlin? #general

JKrupp1@...

My grandfather and his family stated that they came >from Amlin, Russia. I
cannot find such a place. Could it have been Amelin? Does anyone know
anything about Amelin?

Did it have a Jewish population? Was it near a major city? Any information
would be appreciated.

Thank you,

JAPHE in MITAU (Jelgava), RIGA and LIBAU (Liepaja) #latvia

Phillip Minden <Minden@...>

I'm looking for a JAPHE family (with a PH and the oblique-shaped accent on the
E).

AGNES JAPHE (called Nyutka) was born in MITAU (Latvian: Jelgava) and died in
1948 in Bucharest.

Her father HERMANN JAPHE died in 1934 in RIGA, where, according to family
tradition, they had a department store at that time (we don't know if it bore
the name of the family). Hermanns brothers and sisters were: SOFIE, WILLE,
JAKOB, JOHANNA, JULE, DORING, FANNY, HELENE (Lenchen) and MARTHA.

Their father LUDWIG JAPHE was born in LIBAU (Latvian: Liepaja), as were, again
according to family tradition, the latter's parents, whose names I don't know.
Ludwig's wife was AGNES MARTINSON (whose mother was FRIEDERIKE TOCKEL, all of
them Jewish).

They used to speak German, not Yiddish, apart >from Latvian, but I think this is
not uncommon for Latvia, especially the larger cities.

I checked some printed sources (Pinkas hakehilot etc.) but couldn't find any
more information.

Are these names familiar to anyone? (The problems probably are!)

Gut woch,

Phillip Minden

More news on Canadian arrival manifests #general

Harry Dodsworth <af877@...>

I was at National Archives (Canada) today and asked at the genealogy desk
when the rest of the Form 30A arrival cards for 1920 to 1924 would be
released. Names between A and Overland are already available.

Details are on the National Archives (Canada) website: www.archives.ca

I was told that the microfilms >from Overland to Z are actually available.
However there is no storage cabinet space in the usual self service area.

As a temporary measure, the films are kept at the counter and can be
borrowed for internal use and returned during working hours (the microfilm
area is open for self service only evenings and weekends). They hope storage
cabinets will be available soon.

The lady was uncertain if copies were available for interlibrary loan yet.

The films for 1925 to 1935 are being processed; however it does seem that
because of privacy considerations, only the indexes will be available to
the public, and that researchers will have to ask archives staff to look
up a specific name.

With staff cutbacks, I am very doubtful about this process but it must
be better than using the Access to Information procedures that have been
necessary in the past.

CARLIN Family Grows by Leaps #general

Updated: add Blackstone, Mass, to Phoenix AZ

Just want to announce that while research FRIED Family, I kept adding my
maternal family as well, and like a pin ball bouncing off names, CARLIN
family members showed up in New York City, Monticello NY, and Nashville TN,
and still coming out of the woodwork looking for each other. It has really
been rewarding and look forward to the continued growth.

Thanks again to all who have helped and given support. The best is yet to come!!!

Re: Simcha name in English? #general

Ben Noach <bnnch@...>

In my case:-

My father's name was Simcha, but officially he was called Salomon Mozes
(Dutch).Salomon may therefore be a proper equivalent for "Simcha".

He was born on the evening of Tisha be-Av(a day of mourning), and Simcha
meaning Joy, this was the reason for giving this name.So far the tradition.
But my research showed that the gravestone of his grandfather Salomon
Noach also gave "Simcha" as the Hebrew equivalent, so again I think that
Salomon can be seen as the proper equivalent of the Hebrew/Yiddish Simcha.

Christianne Julianne JUDENHERZOG is my gggg-grandmother, and she
was married to the Danish major-general in Norway, Erenst David
von ELY, who was born in Copenhagen in 1667 and died in Stavanger
in 1750. His wife died in 1739. According to my sources her father
was Bernhardus JUDENHERZOG, a high official in the service of the
prince of Waldeck. He lived at Pyrmont in 1694.

Any information about this family, or tip where to seek information,
