(spelling is most probably incorrect).

Valerie,
you're probably looking for CURACAO (the second C with a cédille so it's
pronounced like an S) off the Venezuelan coast; there still is a Jewish
Community there.

Researching SHYMAN #general

Alan Karbritz <AlanK@...>

A friend of mine, who does not
have access to the Internet, was adopted at birth and is trying to
trace her natural mother.

Her name is Linda SHYMAN and she was born in Manchester England in
1950. >from her birth certificate she has found that her mother's
maiden name is Emma SHYMAN and she would have been born around 1930
presumably in England possibly Manchester.

Does any of these facts "ring a bell" with anyone?

If so please email me with any details.

Thanks.

The ship was the NOORDLAND-more questions #general

The Holeywell's <holeywel@...>

Many of you offered several suggestions in response to my request about
determining the name of the ship my Nana, Sophie GRUNBERG/GREENBERG, had
arrived on sometime in 1900. To refresh your memory, I had found a
virtually illegible card with her name in the Passenger Arrival Index cards.

I contacted a commercial company, (Lineages) and for about $12.00 in less
than two weeks, I received in the mail today, a perfectly legible copy of
the Manifest for the SS Noordland, which left Antwerp on August 4th, 1900
and arrived in NY on August 16, 1900. Listed in the manifest is my
grandmother Sophie, a young girl of 15, along with her sister Aneka (we knew
her as Annie), and her brother Solomon (we called him Sam). Her mother,
Sabina is also listed, as well as her father Berl A. GRUNBERG, who is
described as a laborer. Until today, no one in my family knew his name; on
his two daughter's tombstone, they are described as the daughters of
"Abraham" which I always felt was a cop-out since no one knew his real name.

Here is the big puzzle. Berl A.GRUNBERG, the head of the family, is
listed on the Passenger Manifest, written in Antwerp by Frank Loesewitz,
Master of the vessel. Yet Berl was not the name on the Passenger Arrival
Index card. The family was listed under the name of my grandmother,Sophie
GRUNBERG, who was a mere 15 years old. Listed as traveling with her are her
mother, and two siblings, but no mention of Berl (who is described as
"healthy" by the ship's surgeon). Does that imply that Berl died aboard
ship, and was, perhaps, buried at sea? Was he detained? Sent back? What
could have happened to him? How could I best determine what happened to
him?

By the way, in column 16, the family clearly states that they are joining
their cousin, Lazar JACOBSOHN, of Grand St. in NYC. If anyone has access to
a NYC directory for 1900 or 1901, and could look up Lazar JACOBSOHN, I would
be grateful.

I have no financial interest in Lineages. They did an excellent job for me,
at what I felt was a reasonably price, very quickily. They can be reached
at "lineages.com" on the 'net.

I only wish I could share this information with other descendants of Berl A.
GRUNBERG, but either there are none, or I haven't been able to find them!

Poland Border Surnames-Looking for a place and peoples #lithuania

BRPWIT@...

Thank You in advance:

I am searching for any remaining relatives of my step mother-in-law. A
survivor -in the forests. She has a wonderful book SONYA'S ODYSSEY" -
privately published, telling her story. It is interesting in many ways - there
were bad folk and there were good folk - eg many farmwives helped her at risk
to their own lives..

The lady is in her late 80s and a resident of the JEWISH HOME For The AGING in
RESEDA CALIF. Her name is: SONYA KULISH NATER PAPER

The following were known to have been KILLED 1941 - We suspect that there may
be some surviving family members. As this lady has NO known surviving
relatives >from that era - i would like to help her find lost nephews and
nieces. We suspect some may have been sent to siberia before the german
invasion.

grandfather SCHMUEL KULISH
maternal ggf SCHRAGE ROSENTHAL
HUSBAND FAMILY MOSHE NATER
BROTHER SHLOMO KULISH
' MOTEL KULISH
HERSHEL KULISH
SISTER SHAYNDEL OLICKER
CHAYA KATZEVMAN

Re: Bone Marrow Registry for Lithuanian Jews in America #lithuania

Gailcopela@...

Call me suspicious, paranoid, etc., but I would have questioned Gail Lozier
before even posting this message to the group. I've got to wonder about
someone looking to register people of a particular ethnic/religious
background, even for purported medical purposes, when that person apparently
knows nothing about the group he/she is attempting to research. Is this a
person doing an assignment for class or is she a real, practising researcher
in the field, and in the field of what?

Should any JewishGen/LitvakSig subscribers respond to Ms Lozier, please do
question her as much as possible, and perhaps also discuss the matter with
your family doctor. Proceed with caution.
