Converts in Poland #general

Daniel Wagner <Cpwagner@...>

Following the question of Peter NAGURNEY:
Were there any records kept anywhere of Jews who converted to
Christianity in Poland or Galicia in the 1800's to the early 1900's?
In searching the Warszawa microfilms in Salt Lake City I found that
there are two microfilm reels [689336 and 689337] which list births,
marriages and deaths of the Reformed Church in Warsaw and
included are baptisms of Jewish converts.

Dear Friends,

What was the former (German) name of Bydgoszcz?
Did it belong to a part of Prussia, or some other state (such as Pommern)
before the First World War?

Thank you!

Ernie

Why Buenos Aires? #general

Leonard Markowitz <priluki@...>

Why was Argentina such a hot spot for Jews (and Nazis), as
opposed to other South American Countries?

Probably our friends in Buenos Aires can answer this much
better than I can, but the following has always been my
suppositions -

Most of the inhabitants of Argentina are descendents of Spanish,
Italian and Portugese immigrants. There are also sizable German
and Jewish minorities in the country.

During WWII, Juan Peron, was not exactly hostile to Nazi Germany.
Therefore, after the war, many Nazis fled to Argentina where they
escaped the consequences of their crimes in Europe. Since Argentina
was, at least, populated by descendants of Europeans and since
Juan Peron was somewhat sympathetic to the Nazi cause, the country
appeared to offer the best site as a refuge for these Nazis criminals.

As far as Jewish refugees were concerned, I guess that "any port
in a storm" was better than drowning. Also, Jewish refugees probably
felt a little more confortable in a country of European descendants.
Since many Jewish refugees could not gain entrance to the U.S. and
Canada after WWII, Argentina, South Africa and Australia were
selected as alternatives. Another consideration was the more
moderate climate of Argentina.

To a lesser extent, Uruguay and Paraguary, which are on the northern
border of Argentina, were also selected by former Nazis as a safe
haven >from prosecution.

Re: Why Argentina #general

Eddy Fraifeld <efraifeld@...>

Argentina was a hot spot with German's, Jews & Nazis, alike for various
reasons as I am told by various family members.
The weather was similar.
Immigration patterns were established.
The country is on the Eastern side of South America (the side facing
Germany). It was not an impenetrable, hot humid Jungle
which is what you find >from Brazil on north.
During WW2 they were the last country to break diplomatic ties with Germany
and declare war doing so only after it was obvious that
Germany would loose the war. I fact they were a U-boat base for the Germans.

Hebrew Aid Society #general

Rick Potlock <wlrnrp@...>

I'm trying to location information on the Port of Baltimore, Hebrew
Immigration Aid Society. It existed at the turn of the
Century, circa 1903-1920. This group helped my great grandfather
Jacob (Zelig) POTLOCK and his family in the Baltimore area.
They also came over >from Russia aboard a ship called the
Banerliner (spelling?) in 1914 which docked in Baltimore.
Haven't had much success in finding either. Does this ring a bell
with anyone?

You can either repsond to the e-mail above, or to rix17@wlrn.org or to
my cousin at rberko1@hotmail.com

Thanks in advance,
Rick Potlock

I have heard somewhere along the Carribbean Sea exists a place (Island
perhaps) where Jewish Settlers have been living in peace and hormony

it is a Dutch settlement of some sort, and perhaps sounds like Carousel
(spelling is most probably incorrect).

Valerie,
you're probably looking for CURACAO (the second C with a cédille so it's
pronounced like an S) off the Venezuelan coast; there still is a Jewish
Community there.

Miriam
