Hi all:
I just added a new button on the main page of the JRI-Poland
web site (http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl).

The button is entitled "Success Stories".
This links to a page that contains many success stories
people have written to me or others on the JRI board.

Have a look. If you have a success story, feel free to
either post it to this list or email it to me.

We enjoy reading these as it shows that we are doing
the right thing and we are helping many people in their
research.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Deborah,

A few days ago I didn't have an answer to your question, however after finding
a new site, I think you may have a hit. I'm posting to the group because I
feel it may be of use for others researching the Transylvanian area.

Go to http://www.rotravel.com/sit/map/index.htm
Click on Satu Mare County
Look between the towns of Carei and Tasnad, near the River Erin and you will
spot a little town called Cauas (say Ka-oo-ah-sh). This may be what you are
looking for, as it is situated in the valley between two mountains (hills,
rather). In the old name Hegykozkovacs, 'hegykoz' means in between mountains.

Please know that in the last 50 years, county boundaries have changed back and
forth and some places that were at one time in Bihor County may well be today
in Satu Mare, Salaj, or even Cluj Counties.

Same holds true for names of smaller villages. "Cauas" is closer to "kovacs"
than Cauaceu (say Ka-oo-ah-chay-oo) and anyway, in Roumanian language, the
"ceu" is a suffixlike definite pronoun indicating masculin gender.

My best,

Susan Geroe

Dear all,

I just came accross of the following page:

http://www.acronet.net/~magyar/english/96-07/tortknyv.html

which list a number of very interesting books covering Hungary and
Hungarian Jewry, which can be found at the LDS library. I can't reach them
here in Brazil, but maybe some of you can. I hope this is useful.

Tom

BTW, I am looking for a book published by Avotaynu, called

Sourcebook for Jewish Genealogies and Family Histories
by David Zubatsky and Irwin Berent

If somebody has it or can have access to it, please let me know in private.

Many thanks

1848 Census error #hungary

Michael <tex@...>

Arthur Kurzweil's Encyclopedia of Jewish Genealogy lists the LDS numbers for
the 1848 census.

I ordered the number he listed for Hajdu county and found it to be incorrect.

When I checked the book with the librarian we noticed that the number was
out of sequence with the other numbers in the census. So I ordered the
number that seemed logical considering the other numbers. Another mistake.

Does anyone know if the Hajdu portion of the 1848 census is extant and on film?

I don't see it included in Debbi Korman's listing in the contents of the
census on the H-SIG web site. But I believe that I found it listed on the
LDS computer and ordered that number too which was also incorrect.

BERGER family antecedents #lithuania

Would appreciate hearing >from anyone with additional information on, or
who can help me find pertinent information in Lithuania regarding my
great-grandparents, Graenum Falk and Nachama Yochevet BERGER and
their antecedents.
-------------------------------------------------------
They had six children. She and the six (all adults) and their spouses
(five were married in "old" country, one after arrival in US) and their
children, all came to the US circa 1895-1905. All noted below born in
Lithuania. ALL children/descendants born later in US are known. Lack any
information as to siblings, parents, and so forth of Graenum Falk
BERGER.
Suspect he may have had sister, Hannah, who had three sons. No other
information known. None came to America as far as we know.
-------------------------------------------------------
Children of Graenum Falk BERGER and Nachama Yochevet:
- Son Hyman BERGER married Deborah Krever in 1886.
Children: Max, Moe Aaron born 9-1888, Henry, Graenum
- Son Itzig Ber BERGER (my GF) born 1869 was twice married, first to
Rivka Potishvonsky who had two children, Sadie born 10-15-1892 in
Vilnius, and Morris (Moses?) Aaron born 1-15-1894. She died with third
child. Second wife Batya Cohen born 1875, bore one child Rachel
10-5-1902, later three more in US (including my father, Graenum BERGER).
- Son Morris BERGER, married Rose Leavitt. Children Ida and Jean.

born 9-10-1895, Edith, Maurice.
- Daughter Pauline Berger born 1875. Married after arrival in US.
- Daughther Fannie Berger born 1877, married Joseph BRICKMAN in 1898.
Child Leah born 7-15-??.
-------------------------------------------------------
BERGER family generally referred to VILNIUS as their "home," but they
may have all been born in KUPISKIS.
Nachama came to the US in 1899 or 1900. Graenum Falk did not come to US.
Hyman and Deborah Berger and at least two children (Max and Moe Arron)
came to US >from Vilnius in 1898. Hyman was a Talmudic student. Deborah
operated a bakery in Vilnius.
Itzig owned a feed store in Vilnius. Batya worked in the store. Itzig
left for US in 1904 and went to Pennslyvania to peddle. Batya and
children followed in 1905, departing >from Souwalki (Poland) sailing >from
Hamburg, Germany on the S.S. Blucher. She and children arrived in NY
City
on September 3, and traveled to Pennsylvania. They later settled in
Gloversville, NY.
Pauline Berger came to the US >from Kovna in 1898.
Joseph Brickman was a tailor. He went to Capetown, South Africa in

Adding All Lithuania Database to Your ShtetLinks Site #lithuania

Ada Greenblatt <ada.Greenblatt@...>

Coming fresh >from the excellent JewishGen Workshop at the LA Seminar on how
to create one's own ShtetLinks Page, conducted by Rachel Unkefer, I have
begun working on a ShtetLinks site for Seta (although it will be many moons
before it is ready).

The sample template of a homepage for Lazdijai, Lithuania in the JewishGen
ShtetLinks directory under "Creating Your Own ShtetLinks Site" provides for
links to the JGFF, HaMelitz and HaMagid searchable databases, but it does
not yet do so for the brand new All Lithuania Database, so I have just
created one for it.

To add the All Lithuania Database to the Searchable Databases section of
your current or upcoming ShtetLinks page, please use the following HTML
language, substituting the name of your particular shtetl for all
occurrences of YOURSHTETL (all caps or initial cap only for the name of your
shtetl is your choice).
