JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Update to Kovel ShtetLinks site #general

Bruce Drake <bruce.drake@...>

In doing the research for the Kovel shtetlinks site, I came across many oral
histories and memoirs by those who were born and/or lived in Kovel. I have
aggregated them on one page, which you can find here:
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kovel/oralhistories.htm

For those histories and memoirs that listed other family members or
residents of Kovel, I have also updated the site page that contains the
names of all the individuals mention on the site itself, or in material
elsewhere on the web. You can find that here:
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kovel/nameindex.htm

When sharing your family tree online with genealogy data websites such
as ancestry.com, FamilySearch or Geni, etc. - be aware that you are
allowed to upload your data to the publisher's website - on the
condition that you effectively donate your data to the publisher's
data archive, and sign up to a complex, legally-binding agreement.

Additionally, irresponsible submitters include data on the living without
their permission, a no-no for ethical genealogists.

Hello,

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Looking for information on BOGDADLY,BENTLEY & HASSINE history #general

COOKE PAUL <kremmen@...>

Hi all.

1st time here and I hope to get almost any information for my Mother's
side of the Family.

Scant information and no-one left to ask.Story as related so far.

My Great grandfather came to Leeds UK >from Poland, Changed his name to
John BENTLEY and eventually joined the army. Made a sergeant and
posted to India in 1914. Injured he was invalided to Baghdad where he
"faked amnesia" and went to Cairo.
Changed name to BOGDADLY and married an unnamed Turkishh woman and had 5 sons.
My Grandfather was 1 of the brothers Clement BOGDADLY and he married
an Italian catholic (Angela?) >from Lucca / Livorno /Tuscany. He was a
Jeweller or Bookmaker .

The family fled to Cairo after being hunted by Black shirts in
Florence.Lost all money under Nasser and my mother and her half
sister Betty ( born daughter of French Jewess >from Avignon?) lived in
Moascar labour camp ( now Stateless) >from where they both married
Britishh service men and later moved to UK.

An unnamed brother of Clement BOGDADLY had 2 children that we are
aware of , Simone BOGDADLY ( who married a Moroccan last name HASSINE)
(she worked for a big department in Tel Aviv and Raymond BOGDADLY who
married an unknown Israeli woman and has 2 boys and 1 girl ( he worked
for EL AL )( He may have changed hid name to Avissar BENTAL). Other
known relatives are named as Leon ( no details) and Teddy ( who also
worked for EL AL).

I hope this is posted correctly and I thank you for reading.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Where is Radosch, Russia? #general

lthorpe883@...

Hi All-

I have a Hamburg Passenger List >from 1889 which gives the place of
residence for Jacob PROTT and his family as Radosch, Russia.

I have no other records which might be helpful, as Jacob, who
became BROTT, died in 1901, so no WWI Draft records or subsequent
census records. Could it be Radziejow, Poland?

If that is correct, the names of the daughters of Jacob and Clara
puzzle me. They are Amelia, Natalia, Maria, and Elizabeth.
In my Polish research I have never encountered these given names.
I am wondering if this indicates that this family may not have been
Jewish.

Any thought appreciates. Thanks in advance.

Re: Ordering records from Polish State Archives #general

Dear Beverly:

JRI-Poland ran an order processing system >from 2002 to 2006, acting as an
intermediary between researchers and the Polish State Archives. Then, as
now, each main regional Archive was responsible for collections for that
Archive and its branches. Both Radom and Kielce are main regional Archives.
Pultusk is a branch of the Warszawa Archive. The result is that you will
have to make payment to three Archives.

There have been many discussions on different Jewish genealogy forums and I
have not seen any great ways to cut the costs of the bank transfers.

A few ideas have been mentioned:

1) If payment is made >from another EU country, the bank transfer fees are
less.

2) Consolidate your order to each Archive with others wishing to order >from
that same Archive and split the cost of the bank fees.

3) Someone once mentioned XOOM, which sends money worldwide. However, I have
never heard any endorsement of this service or anyone who has used this
service to make payment to the Polish Archives.

I am on the point of applying to the Polish State Archives (PSA) for
copies of seven records I have found in the JRI-pl indexes. However,
I am confused as to the fees for (a) records >from different towns,
same gubernia, same province, but different Fond numbers and in
different Archives (first list below), and (b) for records from
different towns, same gubernia, same province, with different Fond
numbers, but same Archives (second list below)....

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen SIG vs BOF? #general

After so many years of researching my family, one would think I'd know
the answer to this, but I don't. And I think a great many others may
not either.

What is the difference between a SIG (Special Interest Group) and BOF
(Birds of a Feather) membership? I can't find anything at JewishGen on
this, though maybe I didn't look in the right category.

I am asking now because I see BOF meetings in the schedule of the IAJGS
conference for August. I know one can join a SIG through the JewishGen
site, but how does one join a BOF? Are they listed somewhere?

Conscription exemption for Jewish twins in Czars Army? #general

guyleslie@...

Dear Genners,

Can anyone confirm the existence of any special exemption for twins in
Jewish conscription for the Tsarist Army in the late 19th century?

The experts I've consulted (Dov Levin's "Litvaks", Yivo's "Tsarist Army"
etc.) make no mention

According to his son, my forebear Yitschak-Baruch Ovseyiovich, the 'mayor'
of Silale >from 1881-1889, was forced to flee Russian-Lithuania after it
was revealed that he had fraudulently registered his two eldest sons as twins
in order to avoid conscription (I've presumed the automatic exemption only
applied to one twin, with a payoff for the other). The explanation has
been questioned, given that Jewish conscription was patrolled >from within the
Jewish community (which would have known his true circumstances all along),
not to mention the many other ways for 'establishment' Jews to shift
conscription elsewhere.
