Announcement - Sub-Carpathia Portal and Research Group mail list
#galicia
Marshall Katz
A Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list has been created for
researchers with Jewish roots in villages and towns located in present-day Ukraine but formerly located in those parts of the pre-1918 Hungarian counties of Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, the 1918-1939 Czechoslovak territory of Podkarpatska Rus' (Subcarpathia Russia) and the inter-war Hungarian territory called Carpatho-Ukraine. Please note that while, today, parts of Bereg are in Hungary/Ukraine, parts of Maramaros are in Romania/Ukraine, parts of Ugocsa are in Romania/Ukraine and parts of Ung are in Slovakia/Ukraine, this discussion mail list is only concerned with those parts of these four former Hungarian counties that are in present-day Ukraine. For those parts of Bereg in Hungary/Romania today, Maramaros in Romania today, Ugocsa in Romania today and Ung in Slovakia today, visit Hungary SIG or Romania SIG, but you are welcome to sign-up for this list, too. Additionally, to complement the Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list, a Sub-Carpathia Portal (web site) was created for the specific purpose of gathering, presenting and preserving genealogical and historical information about Jewish life in Sub-Carpathia in the former Hungarian counties of Bereg, Maramaros, Ugocsa and Ung, as defined above. The web site portal is always a work in-progress. Therefore, if you have content of interest to all, to enrich the portal, please contact me via the e-mail link at the portal. To join the Sub-Carpathia Research Group mail list, go to: http://www.jewishgen.org/ListManager/members_list.asp To visit the Sub-Carpathia Portal (web site), go to: http://www.jewishgen.org/Hungary/Sub-Carpathia/ Respectfully, Marshall KATZ Camp Hill, PA, USA MODERATOR NOTE: We are posting this message about Sub-Carpathia because of the region's proximity to Eastern Galicia. The Brody Cemetery Project - 2nd call
#galicia
Ami Elyasaf
Dear Researchers:
Two months ago I posted an announcement on the new Brody cemetery project. Thus far we raised less than half of the required budget >from only 16 contributors (out of over 300 Brody registered researchers). Since the first announcement, we have done the following: - Completed a one-day survey at the cemetery, which helped us to estimate the required work. - Put out a proposal for photographing the gravestones and reviewed several responding bids. - Selected a photographer - Defined the scope of work We want to begin photography next month, but whether we can get the work done is up to you! We cannot sign a contract for work without the adequate funding and this is the best season in which to do the photography. In order to have it happen, we need your help in raising the required $4,500. Please consider giving generously so that the work may begin now! Donations can be through our JewishGenerosity account on either Gesher Galicia's page: <http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=14> Or on the Jewish Online Worldwide Burial Records (JOWBR) page: <http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=32> Click on the box that reads: "Brody Cemetery Project." Contributions are tax deductible for U.S. citizens. You contribute online with a credit card or print up a form to fax or mail in with a check or credit card number (US currency only). Instructions: As there are multiple donation sites on each page -- make certain you click on the tab that reads: "Brody Cemetery Project" so your donation is credited properly. Higher levels of donations will give you early access to these records and the Excel files: $100+ Donations: you will receive an Excel spreadsheet with all the information >from the headstones collected that will be going to JOWBR in advance of the data being posted online. Please contact me for questions. Those of you that would like to join the 2nd phase of indexing the photographed data, please contact me. Meanwhile you can search your Brody ancestors at http://sites.google.com/site/elyasaffamily/brody-data (this is the output of our previous project that was done with the generosity of the Brody researchers). JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Request for Social Security Earnings on Deceased Person
#general
Gary Gershfield
Hello to all,
I am interested in requesting a deceased person's employment history fro the Social Security Administration. The form is SSA--7050-F4, Request for Social Security Earnings Information. I read the form with its instructions, which requires proof of relation to the deceased. I would be interested in hearing how rigid this policy is, and would a copy of the SS-5,Application for SS# be sufficient. I would be grateful for anyone to share their experiences. Thank you. My guess would be Novoselitza. My great grandparents are >from the town of Novoselitsa, 30 km >from Yednitz, part of Bessarabia, and very close to the Romainian border. My grandfather listed his nationality as Romainian on one paper and as Russian on others. I have seen the town spelled many different ways, my great grandfather's ship manifest listed it as Novoselitz. Here's a short description. What is the last name you are researching? Three Gesher Galicia members, Marla Raucher Osborn, Paul Osborn
and Alex Feller, recently completed a trip to Rohatyn, Ukraine (Galicia), and Alex will be discussing his work in the Rohatyn cemetery at the GG SIG meeting at the D.C. Conference. Their visit to the village was covered by Ukrainian Television and appeared on a news program. You might want to take a look if you are curious. Even without speaking the language you can catch some English here and there and you'll also enjoy viewing the perspective offered on how foreign coverage covers genealogical and historical explorations like these Americans took.
