I would like a translation of this marriage record and information
about the list of names at the bottom. Are they witnesses? Any indication of relationships? It is >from Hrubieszow, 1860, and I called it Russian, but looking again today, I think perhaps actually Polish? http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=18179 Thanks for the help, Jane Douma Pearson MODERATOR NOTE: You mat reply directly to Jane or, better still, via the ViewMate form.

The results: What can be known about this Hebrew name?
#general
Karen Jo Rippens <krippens@...>
Thanks so much to everyone who responded to this question. My life is richer
now! I not only know about my grandfather?s name, but also his father?s name. The consensus is that the name Leibil Ben Shaye Israel means Leibil = diminutive of Yiddish Lieb, which means lion Ben = son of, of course Shaye = Yeshayahu, or Isaiah Israel, which of course we know However, Renee Stirling actually looked at the Ancestry.com record that contains a snapshot of his headstone. She pointed out that the Hebrew is translated incorrectly, and the last name is actually Hirshel. As I understand it, Hirshel means deer. Thanks everyone. This was wonderful. Karen Jo Rippens

Postings that focus on assistance needed

Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>
I'd like to suggest to other "genners" seeking help with their research
that - in addition to providing a research-specific subject line - their postings to this newsgroup are as brief and to the point as possible. I realize that might be difficult (or almost impossible) to do, especially if it is a complex inquiry, one concerning a number of ancestors or range of issues pertaining to that person's genealogical research. The advantage of posting "short and sweet" messages is that other members will be able to tell right away the nature of the inquiry and the kind of help needed. We're all in the same proverbial boat (although not necessarily the descendants of Jews who disembarked at Ellis Island!) in terms of our genealogical research, and interested in and willing to help other "genners" fill in the gaps or break through those brick walls.. Naidia Woolf San Francisco, CA USA Formerly of Birmingham, England Researching: DROZDIASZ/DROSDASH/RAUS/ROSE: Preston, England, UK; Karczew, Poland ISAACS, Solomon and Sarah: Birmingham, England; Poland (near Warsaw) KUJAWSKI: Lodz, Poland SUMMERS and WINTER: Paterson, New Jersey, USA; Lodz/Kalisz, Poland SAFIRSTEIN (or variants of that name): Karczew, Poland

The matter of obtaining records >from the Berlin registries (Standesaemter)
has been discussed here recently. I had sent a request for records >from around 1890 to the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Standesamt end of December last year. Having still not received an answer and after the suggestion that these records were in the process of being transferred to the archives, I wrote a letter to the Landesarchiv Berlin with the same request. Almost immediately I received an answer (I had visited the archives a few years ago and I got a very favourable impression). They declare that the first transfers >from the Berlin Standesaemter will not occur before the end of 2013. They refer to their website to check the situation. They found that the records I requested are with the Standesamt Mitte and they are forwarding my request to them. I hope that they answer just as quickly, I'll certainly keep the group informed. Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>
Shalom,
February, a short month? We at the Yizkor Book Project have laughed in the face of this short month and are pleased to announce that we have added and updated a record number projects during it. Also during this month, a number of new, exciting projects have begun to brew and, hopefully, in my next report I'll be able to provide more details of them. This month I would like to send out a sincere salute a wonderful group of people who are currently volunteering their free time in translating Hebrew and Yiddish into English. Their uniqueness is that each of them has worked on quite a number of projects and helped their advance for the benefit of us all. So my humble thanks go out this month to: Ruthy Erez, Yocheved Klausner, Sara Mages, Thia Persoff, Pamela Russ, Francine Shapiro & Esther Snyder. While we're talking about translations, if any of you out there are interested in helping to finance the translation of the 47 page section on Lviv (Lemberg) >from Pinkas Hakehillot Poland (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities, Poland), please contact me privately. In general, if you have interest in financing any of the articles >from these pinkasim (encyclopedias) I'd be happy to hear >from you and I'll explain how it can be done. Now to the February figures.
During this last month we have added these 4 new projects: - Kremenets', Ukraine (Voice of Kremenets Emigrants in Israel and the Diaspora - Booklet 1) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kremenets1/Kre1_0100.html - Kremenets', Ukraine (Voice of Kremenets Emigrants in Israel and the Diaspora - Booklet 2) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kremenets1/Kre1_0200.html - Kurow, Poland (Yiskor book in memoriam of our hometown Kurow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kurow/kurow.html - Lukow, Poland (The book of Lukow; Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>
Shalom,
February, a short month? We at the Yizkor Book Project have laughed in the face of this short month and are pleased to announce that we have added and updated a record number projects during it. Also during this month, a number of new, exciting projects have begun to brew and, hopefully, in my next report I'll be able to provide more details of them. This month I would like to send out a sincere salute a wonderful group of people who are currently volunteering their free time in translating Hebrew and Yiddish into English. Their uniqueness is that each of them has worked on quite a number of projects and helped their advance for the benefit of us all. So my humble thanks go out this month to: Ruthy Erez, Yocheved Klausner, Sara Mages, Thia Persoff, Pamela Russ, Francine Shapiro & Esther Snyder. While we're talking about translations, if any of you out there are interested in helping to finance the translation of the 47 page section on Lviv (Lemberg) >from Pinkas Hakehillot Poland (Encyclopedia of Jewish Communities, Poland), please contact me privately. In general, if you have interest in financing any of the articles >from these pinkasim (encyclopedias) I'd be happy to hear >from you and I'll explain how it can be done. Now to the February figures. During this last month we have added these 4 new projects: - Kremenets', Ukraine (Voice of Kremenets Emigrants in Israel and the Diaspora - Booklet 1) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kremenets1/Kre1_0100.html - Kremenets', Ukraine (Voice of Kremenets Emigrants in Israel and the Diaspora - Booklet 2) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kremenets1/Kre1_0200.html - Kurow, Poland (Yiskor book in memoriam of our hometown Kurow) http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/kurow/kurow.html - Lukow, Poland (The book of Lukow;
