Yiddish Theatre and Vadeville #YiddishTheatre Lou Irwin - Billy Lorraine - Ritz Brothers #yiddish

esjoachim@...

For a book about The Ritz Brothers, I am seeking information on:

Lou IRWIN who was an agent or manager, possibly born New Orleans in 1895.

Billy LORRAINE who was a Vaudevillian, partner of George Burns until 1922
and a partner of Al RITZ in the 1920s.

The Ritz Brothers were my great uncles, all born JOACHIM in Newark, NJ. I am
interested only in information about them as it relates to Lou IRWIN and
Billy LORRAINE.

Extensive searching at Ancestry.com, in numerous trade papers and Proquest
have not turned up anything regarding the origins of IRWIN or LORRAINE,
which is what I am seeking.

Thanks for any information or suggestions anyone can provide.

In Scotland, records often say 'Russia Poland', 'Russian Poland',
'Russian Pole', 'Poland, Russia' etc. I would bet that this is all
that this indicates.

Sarina Roffé Elected to JewishGen Board of Governors #general

Fishbein Associates, Inc.

[MODERATOR NOTE: We apologize for sending this important announcement
yet again. The earlier version may have been incorrect due to technical
problems. The version below has been approved by Dr Fishbein and by the
leadership of the JewishGen Board of Governors.]

New York, NY —The Board of Governors of JewishGen is pleased to announce
that Sarina Roffé, a respected family historian and journalist with a
background in communications and nonprofit management, has been elected
unanimously to a position on its Board.

Following her election, Rand Fishbein, Ph.D., a member of the Board’s search
committee, commented, “The Board could not be more delighted to welcome
Sarina onto the JewishGen team. We will be looking to her for fresh ideas
on how to expand our programming and online resources to include Jewish
communities that, up until now, have been under-represented in our work.
Her knowledge and experience are sure to prove invaluable as we look to
expand our outreach activities.”

Ms. Roffé is a member of Brooklyn's Syrian Jewish community and an active
member of the Jewish Genealogical Society, Inc. (of New York) (JGSNY). She
has published widely on themes connected with Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish
genealogy and is a recognized authority on the history and culture of
Aleppan Jewry.

Ms. Roffé comes to JewishGen with wide experience as a writer and speaker in
the fields of marketing, fundraising, deaf education and public relations.
She served as President of the National Cued Speech Association from
2002-2008 and as the Director of Public Affairs for the New York City
Department of Juvenile Justice >from 1996-2002. Currently, Ms. Roffé is the
Executive Director of the Shehebar Sephardic Center in New York, NY, a
nonprofit organization that fundraises for its rabbinical training program
in Israel, and support for schools and outreach centers in more than sixty
cities worldwide.

When asked how she felt about joining the JewishGen Board, Ms. Roffé said,
“It is both a great honor and opportunity to be asked to help guide this
important organization. I believe deeply in the richness and diversity of
our Jewish heritage and in the role family history can play in illuminating
our collective past. By providing our children with documentary proof of
their roots, we are grounding them for the future. I hope those who are not
working yet with JewishGen will consider doing so.”

Observed Dr. Fishbein, “When we speak of ‘Am Yisrael’ we speak of one
worldwide Jewish community. It is the mission of JewishGen to strengthen
our community by providing family history researchers with easy access to a
wealth of online Jewish genealogical information. Jewish tradition teaches
that when we honor our ancestors we honor ourselves. By working together we
can achieve what none of us can do alone, the collection, preservation and
dissemination of Jewish family history. Having Sarina on our leadership
team brings us another step closer to realizing this important goal.”

Reg the 1930 census #hungary

janhlavinka@...

I have read the post of Beth Long of Budapest regarding the 1930 census.
The census really is the great source of information for Jewish genealogy. However, >from the practical point of view, I would suggest
that people willing to conduct a research using this source should contact Slovak National Archives in Bratislava
and check the availability of records of the specific town or village there.
Not each and every village is available: there are some missing. The SNA has its own method (and sources) in locating the records (checking availability) of specific places.
I think that the simple e-mail to SNA sent before to the research trip may be helpful. It can definitely save you some money and time.

I have a family tree for my mother's paternal side of the family, but hit
a stonewall, [as did my archivist in the Ukraine] on my mother's maternal
side of the family. I do have some contemporary information, but lack
details prior to my grandmother's emigration to the US.

I am searching for additional information for my maternal grandparent
GERMAN (GERMAINE or GHERMAN) were >from in the Ukraine. Before coming to America
they lived in Kamennyy Brod, Ukraine, Latitude, Longitude: 50° 25' N, 27°
50' E

My gm and gf lived in other Ukrainian locations before KB and may have met
and married in KB.

Grandmother's Chaika (Ida) parents were Schmuel GERMAN and Channah
(possibly GREENBERG). My grandmother may have been adopted by relatives
Their children were Liebe, Scheindl, Sura, and a brother, in addition to gm
(the youngest). Liebe's (married name possibly Marcus) children were
Veena (a pharmacist who immigrated, then returned to Russia and was killed in
WW II), Jeanette GERMAINE, and Charlotte, who married Max LEHMAN.

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kamennyy_Brod/

I am also looking for additional information on OXENHORN (OXENGORN),
GERMAN (GERMAINE or GHERMAN), GREENBURG, KUPERSCHMIDT, BARKIN (BARITZ), ZINDEL,
FRISCHMAN.

Grandfather Meir Itzik [Meyer Issac] OXENHORN. May have belonged to the
Kammenbroder Voliner Progressive Society. My grandfather and family
before his marriage lived in Ostrog [I have over 500 digital photo pages of a
1795 Census in Ostrog-not translated and has no surnames]. Grandfather's
parents were Zitldel Schmuel OXENGORN (OXENHORN) and Perle.
He had sister Neche (married GOODMAN, lived in Lynn, MA) and probably
brother Muttel. Neche had 7 children.
Scheindl lived to approx age 95. Children were Edna (married GREENE -
children Jules or Julus and Bernard, Sam (or Zindel) FRICHMAN or FRISHMAN
(married Hattie), Norma (married David ELOITCH; son Walter), Clara
(youngest, married Sam COOPERMAN--son Edwin lives in Scarsdale), Mary
(married Bosinoff; daughter Clara), Sonya (married Reuben Bronfman--son
Reuben Branfman has 3 children, including Daniel BRONFMAN and 2
daughters), Hannah (aka Anna, married SINGER; daughter Dorothy married
Herman FOX, 2 sons including Davis). Abe KUPERSCHMIDT, arrived 9/15/1901.
He may be my gf's brother-in-law or possibly a close friend

Sura's daughter Jennie married BUFFORD. Son Charlie married Lenord
SPEAR's aunt. Daughters Ann Schulman or SHULMAN, Syliva and 2 more.

Please reply directly to me any solid information.

World War I Travel #belarus

I have just discovered immigration records for a cousin who immigrated in
1916. As an 11 year old, he traveled with another 11 year old and the
latter's mother, >from Mogilev, Russia (now Belarus) to Oslo, Norway, and
then by ship to New York. My question is how they got out of a Russia at
war, and how they got >from Mogilev to Oslo? The normal immigration route
across the German border to Hamburg or Bremen was obviously closed. Does
anyone know of information about travel during WWI?

If anyone can shed light on the possibility of a town called Poland in
Russia.

Simon Jackson's 1931 Boston, MA death record (s/o Phillip S. & Esther R.
Pinkus) states they are all >from city "Poland" in country "Russia". Born c.
1855. I find a hit on D/M soundex for modern day Viljandi, Estonia. I am
curious if other researchers have seen "Poland" as a town in any vital
record? Is it most likely the country of Poland that emerged after WWI?
Simon's 1886 Naturalization record in England indicated he is broadly >from

In celebration of National Library Week ** Gale Cenage Learning is offering
free access to the Gale resources >from April 10-April 24.
