Re: Meaning of nickname Cuttie

In England cute children are often referred to as cutie as a term of endearment and this can stick after childhood. It is sometimes miss-spelt as Cuttie,

Looking for info about William Siegler
#names
Jo Ann Goldwater
Recently I received the results of my DNA from Ancestry, and the first name on my list of matches is William Siegler, who is listed as a first cousin. It is a very close match but I doubt that he is a first cousin, possibly a second. It is likely that he is related to me through my grandmother, Bertha Kahn Goldwater. She was born in Zhager, moved to Riga, and then to New York, and Montreal. I don’t know very much about the Kahn family and I would love to find out more about them. If anyone has some information about William Siegler, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks. Jo Ann Goldwater Montreal, and Sarasota.

I there isn't already a handout available, I open up a blank Word document and take screenshots of the screens with info I need to revisit and add notes under the screenshots. I crop the screenshots to eliminate extraneous info and then make the screenshot larger so it is more readable. I then save the Word document with the name of the presentation so I can find it and refer back to it.

Yes, go back to their online database and put in the name of the society without any name and up will come all those buried in that section.

HAIMA/HAIME HOCHMAN Immigration
#usa
Felissa Lashley
It was told to me that when my grandfather immigrated to the port of
Boston on the SS Corean, arriving July 5, 1907 under the name of NOCHIM DRUBITZKY, he travelled with HAIMA/HAIME HOCHMAN who went to St. Joseph, Missouri. I would like to find the record of HAIMA HOCHMAN so that I can fill in any information about a blood connection and have not been able to find HAIMA HOCHMAN. It does say in one of his census documents that he arrived in 1907. I do have the records for my grandfather. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Felissa Lashley frlashley@... Mike, Try Ukrainian online periodicals archive: https://libraria.ua/en/ It does look a bit complex to search on the site, and it appears that even if you click on English at top of page, the results are not in English. Hope this helps, Sherri Bobish

In the presence of witnesses Borukh-Leib Hoffmann, a shoemaker, 56 years old, and Yosel Vaterloif, a religious minister, 51 years old, both residents of the city of Lenchin presented us with a male baby who was born in the city of Lenchin on the 10th (22nd) May at 2 pm from the legal wife of Ghana-Gendlya, née Borenstein, 20 years old. The infant was given the name Froim Bliones during circumcision. This act was read to those present, who declared that they were illiterate. Ariel Parkansky
Hi Mike,
I've checked the All Odessa Database from the Odessa Kehilalinks (https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/odessa/) but I haven't found your Yasnes. There is already a book indexed about the Odessa Jewish Cemetery Tombstones but it dates from 1899. There's a project ongoing for indexing the Odessa Vital Records Indexes from 1875 to 1920 (births, marriages and deaths). We have currently only one volunteer working on the translations so it will take some time. Part of the births has already been published. We are currently working on the marriages. Best, Ariel Parkansky Odessa Town Leader from Ukraine SIG

Weitz Bakery on West Adams, Los Angeles
#usa
Debby Gincig Painter
My Great-Grandfather and his brother started Weitz Bakery when they came to Los Angeles in the 1920s. 3 generations worked there until it was sold and became Brooklyn Bagel Bakery in 1953. With all so much of the family (in-laws branches included) working there, not a single person in our family has a picture of the bakery-inside or out.
I don't know if this is ok to ask here or not, but considering the popularity of the bakery and then their delicatessen, I am hoping someone in the L.A. area might have an old photo they'd be willing to share. I've contacted Brooklyn Bagel Bakery with no luck and am waiting on a call back from Jewish Historical Society of SoCal. Thank you in advance from me and 3-5th generations of descendants. South Africa immigration
#southafrica
Sylvia Tulkoff
My grandmother, Bertha Hoff, had brothers who immigrated to South Africa from Latvia (late 1890’s - early 1900’s?). I know she married Philip Cohen (also from Latvia) in Baltimore in 1908 but I have never been able to find any paperwork pertaining to her arrival in either the United States or South Africa.
Does anyone know if there are ship manifests or any other records of arrival in South Africa available on line? I would be happy to hire someone to research for me in South Africa if the records exist but are not digitized. Sylvia Tulkoff Baltimore MD stulkoff@... #southafrica
