My grandfather Simon Okun was already in the US by then (Nov 19, 1913) but I have no record of him at such an address on that date. He married his second wife in early 1911. His address listed on the marriage certificate was 636 E. B Street.  However I can not find such an address although there is a 636 Ave B which is not too far from where the marriage was performed at 199 Eldridge Street, Manhattan. But Simon's Declaration for Naturalization was filed in February 1913 when he claimed to be a resident of Griffin Corners, NY. which doesn't seem to exist anymore.  I have it in my head that the papers were filed in Delhi, NY but I can't find the source for that at the moment. In the 1920 census he was in Catskill, Greene County, NY.

My tree on Ancestry is June Genis Family Tree and is public.  A lot of the information on Simons Declaration was deliberately misstated to make it appear that his second wife's children from her first marriage were also his so all would be naturalized.

Here is a link to Louis/Mojsej's full gallery. I have found DNA cousins in Europe and Israel that I am sure he is related to but haven't been able to find his parents or how while all of those cousins trace to Rogachev, Belarus Simon claimed to have been born in Poltava, Ukraine. Any help in making sense of all this would be greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem asking the DOH for my grandparents' death certificates.
They died in Brooklyn in the 1960s.
I was looking for their parents' names.

Lowell,

Try searching The JewishGen Belarus Database.

I searched for town Rechytsa and got lots of hits.  I only looked very quickly at some of the hits, and found at least one person TSIRULNIK, Ruvin, from Rechytsa, living in Minsk.

Try reading through all the hits for the town, and also try a soundex search on the surname.

Louis NIGOFF's 1916 marriage record can be viewed at www.familysearch.org

Louis' father is listed as:  Gerson
Louis' mother as: Hilda SRULIKOFF

A photo of Louis' tombstone is here:

Louis' naturalization papers can also be seen at www.familysearch.org

Hope this helps,

Re: Researching Benjamin Lakritz #general #poland #usa

Susan,

A search at Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org found a few records:

It looks like Benjamin LAKRITZ, born Sep. 188? (year changes slightly on various records, as does the date in September) was in the U.S. Army in WW1, and his father is listed as Solomon LAKRITZ.

His birthplace is given as Warsaw.  However, on his naturalization papers his birthplace looks like Chrusnitz (sp??)

This is a transcription of Benjamin's 1923 NYC marriage record, which lists his father & mother's names:
Event Type: Marriage
Event Date: 03 Jun 1923
Event Place: Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Event Place (Original): Manhattan, New York, New York
Name: Benjamin Lakritz
Sex: Male
Age: 32
Birth Year (Estimated): 1891
Birthplace: Warsaw, Russia
Marital Status: Single
Race: White
Father's Name: Solomon
Mother's Name: Tauba Rosenberg
Spouse's Name: Rebecca Kleinberg
Spouse's Sex: Female
Spouse's Age: 24
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated): 1899
Spouse's Birthplace: Podalia, Russia
Spouse's Marital Status: Single
Spouse's Race: White
Spouse's Father's Name: Harry Busna
Spouse's Mother's Name: Ida Katz

Hope this helps,

Sherri Bobish

Jewish Cemeteries in Poland and the Pandemic – an Update Directly from Poland

with Witold Wrzosinski, Director of the Jewish Cemetery in Warsaw, Poland

VIRTUAL MEETING: Join from Home

Thursday, 18 February 2021, at 7:30 pm. ET.

In recent decades, a huge increase of interest in the Jewish past has taken place in Poland and elsewhere in Eastern and Central Europe. It has taken many forms, ranging from thousands of private genealogy projects, to preservation and digitization efforts, to museums, TV shows and conferences, to a notable growth in heritage tourism.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Toronto and its Poland SIG will present direct from Poland Witold Wrzosinski to discuss his efforts in preserving our Jewish history by preserving our Jewish cemeteries. As the co-founder and co-director of the Foundation for the Documentation of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland, he has been indexing epitaph inscriptions from Polish-Jewish cemeteries for the last 14 years and run an open access, searchable online database with more than 110,000 photographs and transcriptions from more than 100 cemeteries.

Join us as we explore his efforts during COVID-19, especially in these trying times when travel is hardly possible and people rarely leave their homes. How do we even start finding the right people? What is the future of local projects already undertaken by descendants in cooperation with residents in dozens of remote Polish towns? Are Jewish cemeteries bound to deteriorate now for good? How are the relevant institutions in Poland dealing with this challenge? Let’s try to get answers.

(US-AZ) Arizona Jewish Post to Cease Publication #announcements #general

Jan Meisels Allen

Another Jewish publication has announced it is closing shop in print.  The Arizona Jewish Post will cease publication on March 1 after 75 years covering the Jewish population of Tucson and southern Arizona.

The Jewish Community Federation of Southern Arizona, which owns and operates the Post, announced the closure in an email to subscribers this week. The letter cited declines in ad revenue and readership, loss of philanthropic support and the COVID-19 pandemic as factors that contributed to the Post’s “unsustainable position.”

Other Jewish publications have also announced in recent times they are shutting down, which include:

the Jewish Advocate in Boston and Canadian Jewish News have also closed down (CJN recently relaunched as an online-only publication). The New York Jewish Week also closed its print edition in 2020, and was acquired by Jewish Telegraphic Agency’s parent company, 70 Faces Media, in January.

The Jewish News of Greater Phoenix, which covers the substantially larger (and growing) Jewish population in Northern Arizona, remains active and is independently owned.

Re: Mosciska researcher? #galicia

J.R. Silver

Dear Sam,
As you will have seen from the information you cited on the Gesher Galicia website, the 1852 Mosciska Book of Lands / list of landowners and the associated 1852 cadastral map were acquired some years ago by Gesher Galicia. The landowners list has  been indexed, so if you search for your family name on the All Galicia Database, any 1852 Landowner records for your family will come up. I struck lucky and found that my remote ancestor in Mosciska, Juda Mechel EISTEIN /EISENSTEIN was the owner in 1852 of House 17 on Building Plot 24 .  The 1852 Mosciska Cadastral Map is a Field Sketch ( see message yesterday from Jay Osborn on cadastral map for town of Svirz) and this means that the numbers on the map are House Numbers, not Building Plot numbers. As you will know, all the Mosciska Birth and Death records provide house numbers, so this means that by analysis of the vital records, you may be able to locate the houses of your families on the cadastral map, regardless of whether they were the owners of the plot of land upon which the house was built.  There are also Books of lands and record books of landowners for 1879-1895,  which have not been yet acquired by Gesher Galicia.  This would make a very interesting future project. I gave a short presentation at IAJGS Warsaw 2018 on locating House 17, where my grandmother Reisel SPIRA was born in 1887, and will happily share. It would be good to get together as a group to fund acquiring further landowner records.  My guide in Mosciska, whom I highly recommend. was Tomasz Jankowski , of jewishfamilysearch.com. Tomasz  is based in Lviv and is a researcher of great expertise.

In NYC, divorces are not public for 100 years.
So you have several years to wait. You can check with the Division of 0ld Records located on the 7th floor of 31 Chambers Street in Lower Manhattan which also houses the Municipal
Archives.  They should be able to look thru the divorce index and then get you the actual record when it is 100 years old.

JGASGP Meeting with Miriam Weiner #announcements #jgs-iajgs

Marilyn Golden

The Jewish Genealogical and Archival Society is having a special members only meeting.
Date: Sunday, February 21, 2021
Time: 1:00 pm Check-in, Chat, and Schmooze.
Official program starts promptly at 1:30
Guest Speaker: Miriam Weiner, Genealogist, Author and "Creator of the Consolidated Eastern European Archival Database”
In 1989, Miriam Weiner accepted an invitation from the Polish National Tourist Office to visit the Polish Archives in preparation for arranging genealogy tours to Poland. That visit led to a 30-year career working in the archives of Poland, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and Lithuania.
In 1991, The Jewish Week in New York, referred to Miriam as ” The genealogist who lifted the archival iron curtain” and in 1998, The Forward referred to her as “The Indiana Jones of pre-war polish Jewry”.
Topic: Updates at the rtrfoundation.org website:
Miriam Weiner Introduces New Surname Database with 2,000,000+ names at her Website!
From 30+ years of working in the archives of Eastern Europe, I have acquired hundreds of various document collections and have formed a close working relationships with archivists on all levels which continues to this day.
During the last 2 years, I have created a surname database (searchable via standard search and OCR search) which enables the researcher to access Holocaust name lists, vital records, census lists, school records, property lists, various telephone & business directories, most of which does not appear elsewhere online. Written permission was obtained from archivists, authors and institutions for me to create data files & publish this information.
The data entry is ongoing. Additionally, at www.rtrfoundation.org, a town name search can produce: 1: archive data for that town, 2: images of the town, and 3: link to street map of the town.
A surname search can produce 1: document results with that surname, 2: link to a street map, and 3: links to town images. All in a single search!
Miriam will walk us through and demonstrate her newly redesigned website https://www.rtrfoundation.org/index.shtml and the new searchable surname database using Standard Surname Search and OCR Search (Optical character recognition) https://www.rtrfoundation.org/lnintro.shtml.
You will be amazed at what material is currently available from Belarus, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Ukraine including images and maps from many of the towns Miriam has visited during her 30 years of working in the archives of Eastern Europe. The new website currently has over 200 collections and 1 million new documents with more being added daily.

*All meetings (except for March 7th) are a benefit for paid members only. Please see our website for additional membership and meeting information. We welcome new members.
We host meetings every 3 weeks with expert speakers on a variety of topics. Our website has a lot of research information focusing on Philadelphia.

*On March 7th we will be hosting a BEGINNERS WORKSHOP with our genealogy wizard Joel Spector. More information will also be posted on our Facebook page.

Re: SSI Applications and Claims Index #records

Sally Bruckheimer <sallybruc@...>

"When A person applies for a social security number they are asked a variety of questions including their parents names.  When the person dies and a claim is made against their social security either by a child (if under age) in the case of an early death or by a spouse then a "claim record" is generated,."

This is what happens now. When I got my Social Security Number, it was at the bank, where they had a roll of cards in a typewriter.  Genealogists should all be conscious that everything changes with time. My parents didn't email Social Security when I was born, as there was no email. I didn't get a Social Security Number when I was born, as children didn't need them. You ggrandfather (or whatever) signed up in the 1930s when it started.

Yes, parents' names were taken, as well as date of birth, although Social Security didn't assume that they had the right birth date; there was a long list of sources for birth information, generally the earliest record of the person in the US. My mother was born in Buffalo, and she had a birth record originally, but she sent her copy to Albany for her teaching certificate. There was a fire in City Hall, so Social Security had to use other information for her proof of age: the earliest US census with her in it.

Re: New Find Raises Questions about Family Name: #poland #names

Paula J. Freedman

Could Penesuch be the mother's maiden name, or the father's mother's maiden name? I had a similar situation trying to locate my great grandparents' arrival record. Although GGF was known as Sam Padwe both in Ukraine and in the U.S., his legal name according to his military papers was Samuel Padwe r. Klinghoffer, because his parents' marriage wasn't recognized by the civil authorities in Ukraine. Sure enough, they traveled under the names Sam and Ida Klinghoffer, then promptly went back to Padwe in the U.S.

An anecdote, but possibly helpful.

Re: Additional insight into tombstones #poland

The one for Sheindel has been vandalized and bulk of the inscription has been chiseled off. All it says is Sheindel bas Peretz.Nothing else

The one for Meier lists his full name was Meier Eliezer ben Tsvi Velvel.  There is a lengthy inscription which perhaps someone with Hebrew fluency can make out.
The very last line lists his date of death.
I have had good luck with copying & pasting the image into a photo editor (I use the free IrfanView program) and playing with increasing and decreasing gamma, contrast and / or brightness. Sometimes changing the image to a negative helps to read a black & white inscription.

Re: SSI Applications and Claims Index #records

June,

That is actually the Soc. Sec. application for Louis OKUN.  Soc. Sec. applications never list the applicant's child's name.  The database is showing all hits that contain the name Samuel OKUN, and confusingly, it shows the one that you found (which is for Samuel's son.)  This database has confounded researchers before.  The below info should clarify things.  The number after Mother's name is not a Soc. Sec. #, as it's the wrong # of digits.

Hope this helps,
