Do you have a lot of genealogical material to share and want to put it
on the web, but don't know how? Have you waited for someone to create a ShtetLinks site for your town, but no one has? Do it yourself! If you have basic computer skills, that's all you need to start making web pages. We will use a free, downloadable, simple-to-use web page editor to create our pages so you don't have to buy expensive software. This editor runs on both PCs (all versions of Windows) and Macs (OS X 10.2 or later), so practically everyone will be able to use it. Requirements: 1) You must have basic computer skills such as knowing how to click on hyperlinks and how to "copy and paste" text using a computer mouse, etc. 2) You must be comfortable with using a web browser like Internet Explorer or Safari, and with using a word processing program like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect. You don't have to be an expert, just someone who has used those programs or programs like them. 3) And you'll need about 4-5 hours each week to read the lessons and practice making web pages The tuition is $36 and you can pay online by clicking on the Enroll Link on the education page at www.jewishgen.org/education. You can pay online with our secure credit card system. If you have any questions, please email JewishGen-Education@... Phyllis Kramer V.P.Education, JewishGen Inc. Researching UK Army Regimental Archives
#unitedkingdom
stan@...
The units' War Diaries, held at Kew, are worth looking at for they
give their day-to-day activities. As a general view, they will just give officers names, not 'other ranks', but the content depends upon the officer on the day. If you would care to send me, privately, the names of the persons you are searching, together with their regimen and number, I will see how they are listed in the "British Jewry Book of Honour". If any had lost his life during WW1, then his home address will be listed and also possibly a photograph. Stan Rose. England |

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen JGS, Inc( NY) November 21, Meeting: "American Passage, The History of Ellis Island"
#general
Roni S. Liebowitz
Next JGSNY Meeting: November 21, 2010, 2:00 PM
Topic: "American Passage, The History of Ellis Island" Speaker: Vincent J. Cannato Professor Cannato masterfully illuminates the story of Ellis Island >from the days when it hosted pirate hangings witnessed by thousands of New Yorkers in the 19th century, to the turn of the 20th century when massive migrations sparked fierce debate and hopeful new immigrants often encountered corruption, harsh conditions, and political scheming. American Passage captures a time and place unparalleled in American immigration and history, and articulates the dramatic and bittersweet accounts of the immigrants, officials, interpreters, and social reformers who all play an important role in Ellis Island's chronicle. Providing readers with a glimpse into the lives of these individuals, Cannato masterfully narrates this complex and often heart-wrenching epic. Though the last immigrant was processed at Ellis Island over fifty years ago in 1954, this comprehensive history traces the importance of this historic location well after the final immigrant set foot there. American Passage illustrates the port of entry's lasting legacy, >from the discussion of the detention of aliens during World War II, to the rebirth of Ellis Island as a national monument. As immigration policy, national security, and the war on terror remain at the forefront of national debate today, this timely history offers Americans an important perspective on how the nation addressed similar challenges a century ago. In this sweeping history, tracing the dramatic stories and evolution of this influential American landmark, Cannato reveals that the history of Ellis Island is ultimately the story of what it means to be American. Professor Cannato teaches history at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and is the author of The Ungovernable City: John Lindsay and His Struggle to Save New York. He has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. A book-signing will follow the presentation. Members are free, guests $5.00 at the door Location: Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues), Manhattan. The Ackman & Ziff Family Genealogy Institute at CJH will be open before the meeting starting at 11:00 a.m. for networking with other researchers and access to research materials and computers.
