look up an address in on-line British directories because for
outsiders the sites require paid subscriptions.
I have traced descendants to 2010 and would like to write to them via
postal mail. I have used this method successfully because it
"softens" the inquiry >from a total stranger and gives the recipient a
chance to digest the info. Tried Facebook, but oftentimes my Facebook
messages go ignored. Can anyone recommend a UK website on which I
can look up a couple of addresses free of charges?

[Nokum] Jacobs born abt 1865 and his wife Nelly [Nakka] Kanunya born abt

My great uncle Lazarus (Leslie) Greenberg was born at 8 Copenhagen Street,
Leeds in 1889. When I try to search for this address in the censuses of 1881
and 1891, it does not appear, but images of and references to the street do
appear on other websites. Was the name of the street changed during this
period or was it part of another street? Any clues would be most helpful.

R. Gedalya b Yakov Rutenburg or Rothenbourg was born in Metz (Lorraine,
France) in 1762 and was one of the pupils of the well known Shaagath Arieh
(Ginzburg), chief rabbi in Metz >from 1766 to 1785.
R. Gedalya claimed he belonged to the 18th generation after the Maharam ; he
was the son of Yakov Rotenburg and Fogel Grodvol (who maried in Metz in
1760) ; Yakov was the son of Salomon (or Shlomo) who married (Metz 1714)
Blimle >from Saarbruck ; Salomon (or Shlomo) was the son of Mardochee (or
Mordekhai) who was born about 1655 (probably in Metz) and died in 1737 ;
Mordekhai was the son of Salomon (or Shlomo) who came >from Brumath and
settled in Metz as one of the teachers of the community (census 1662) ;
Salomon who was born about 1620 in Brumath and died in 1681 in Metz was the
son of Mordekhai Rotenburg : this Mordekhai may be one of the four Jews who
lived in Brumath in 1640.
Mordekhai is a typical name of the Rothenburg genealogy. About the

R. Gedalya claimed he belonged to the 18th generation after the Maharam ; he
was the son of Yakov Rotenburg and Fogel Grodvol (who maried in Metz in
1760) ; Yakov was the son of Salomon (or Shlomo) who married (Metz 1714)
Blimle >from Saarbruck ; Salomon (or Shlomo) was the son of Mardochee (or
Mordekhai) who was born about 1655 (probably in Metz) and died in 1737 ;
Mordekhai was the son of Salomon (or Shlomo) who came >from Brumath and
settled in Metz as one of the teachers of the community (census 1662) ;
Salomon who was born about 1620 in Brumath and died in 1681 in Metz was the
son of Mordekhai Rotenburg : this Mordekhai may be one of the four Jews who
lived in Brumath in 1640.
Mordekhai is a typical name of the Rothenburg genealogy. About the

I now have information that my LIFSCHITZ family was >from Latvia and were in
the leather business. My g-uncle's name was Joseph Osher Lifschitz and he
was married to Basha JASELOV. They had 2 girls, Anna, Sarah and 2 boys,
Aaron and Sam Leaf (the U.S. surname.) Sam LEAF was killed in Savannah, GA
by a burglar. Harry Aaron married Sadie SHENKIN and had Herbert, Ann, James,
and Alex, using the surname of LEAF.

I am trying to find the birth, marriage and ancestor history for Nathan
[Nokum] JACOBS born abt 1865 and his wife Nelly [Nakka] KANUNYA born abt
1865. My grand mother is their daughter Sarah born about 1886.

The three of them entered England somewhere between 1886 and 1888. Another
daughter Amy was born in England in 1888. The U.K. census reports for 1891,
1901, just show their birthplace as Russia, 1911 says Russia/Poland.
Sarah's marriage certificate also says Poland so I am fairly comfortable
with that.

I can find no immigration records for the three and searches on various
Jewish databases including PRI have led me nowhere.

There was a son Emmanuel (1895) and a daughter Rebecca (1898) later born in
England. I have no problem tracing the family forward >from these times but
can find nothing on where they came from.

I would welcome any ideas, leads or direct information.

I do hope those who attended the recent IAJGS conference left it with
renewed energy and motivation to continue your genealogical research.
Of course, if your research leads you to the realm of Yizkor Books,
I am here to help and direct you.

Meanwhile, the Yizkor Book Project continues to hold a wealth of
genealogical and historical information and to improve access to this
precious data, we recently initiated something called the Yizkor Book Master
Name Index (YBMNI) Project. The aim of this project is to collect all the
names appearing in the Yizkor Book translations (apart >from necrologies),
to organize them into a database through which researchers can seek out
names and be directed to the online translated pages themselves.

We have been very fortunate in that Osnat Hazan has agreed to be the YBMNI
Project Manager and together with a small group of volunteers, has begun
the enormous task of collecting and organizing this data. The YBMNI is

If you have a good understanding of Excel, are methodical, have time
available and would like to assist in this groundbreaking project,
please contact Osnat via the link appearing on the main YBMNI page.
