German SIG #Germany ancestry of genealogist Peter Stern BUCKY #germany

Irene Newhouse

According to "Genealogical Tables of Jewish Families", chart VI C,
Peter Stern BUCKY's parents are Elen BUCKY and Franz STERN (1890-1964).
This doesn't quite make sense. And it gets even worse, because the
second of only 2 hits on "Peter Stern BUCKY" using a major
search engine is to the Aufbau death notice >from 1945, for
Daisy HIRSCH nee HERRMANN, in which are listed Peter Stern BUCKY &
presumably his parents, Dr. Gerhard and Ellen nee HIRSCH BUCKY,
as PSB is listed immediately below them.
Does anyone have further information?

There is only one reference to him in the JewishGen discussion group
archives, >from 1997, asking for information, and none in the GerSIG archive.
There seems to be nothing in the Leo Baeck Institute (NYC) catalog.

Thanks in advance! Irene Newhouse Kihei HI USA einew137@...

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Success story - Barry SQUIRE researching GROSSMAN #general

A few days ago, I was looking for a Barry SQUIRE, who had written to me in 1980 about
a GROSSMAN connection. I wrote to him in 1998 but received no reply. Last week I
came across his name as a survivor in the obit of a newly discovered relative. Over
the past few days, some terrific genners helped me find him. I have thanked each one
personally; thanks again to Barbara, Bette, Debbie, Ittai, Linda, Marian, Rodney &
Tina. I now have current contact information. Even if we don't connect, I know how
he's related, so I consider this a success story!

In a chapter written in Yiddish in "Sefer Serock," appears a word that has
quotes around it: "Akovtses" (transliteration) The Hebrew characters are, >from
right to left, alef qof alef vav vav tsadeh ayin samech...The translated
sentence:We received notices that all our dear and close ones had gone into the
gas chambers of Treblinka and Majdanek, and we were advised not to go in the
direction of Warsaw because the "Akovtses"(?) are tormenting the Jews.
Howard,

"Akovtses" is Polish for "Akowcy" - members of Polish underground Home Army
(Armia Krajowa) or AK. Read more about in article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armia_Krajowa

I believe that this sentence >from the Yzkor Book is not historically correct since
AK was supported Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943 by providing arms and explosives,
and it was member of AK, Witold Pilecki who was only one person to volunteer for
imprisonment in Auschwitz. The information he gathered proved crucial in convincing
Western Allies about the fate of the Jewish population.

Another AK member, Jan Karski in 1942, was sent by AK on a secret mission to
personally carry the first eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust to the mostly
disbelieving Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

There were other underground movements in the Poland during the war,
especially notorious NSZ (Narodowe Sily Zbrojne) - National Armed Forces known for
their actions directed towards Jews BTW, today on August 1st is 66th anniversary of
failed Warsaw Uprising (not to confuse with Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943), the
most widely known AK operation.

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Announcing the beta-site of the Montefiore Censuses for 1839, 1855 and Alexandria 1840 #ukraine

rosef@...

The Israel Genealogical Society is proud to announce the launching of
the online Beta website of the 19th Century Montefiore Censuses of the
Jewish Population of Eretz Israel, Alexandria, Beirut and Sidon (Saida).
The details recorded include personal and family particulars, occupations
and countries of origin, The censuses are unusually comprehensive as it is
estimated that fewer than 1% of the Jewish inhabitants of Eretz Israel
refused to participate because of religious scruples. Some others may not be
included for personal or political reasons

The manuscripts belong to the Montefiore Endowment and are held in its
library in London, where they can be seen by appointment. They are written
in Hebrew, in a variety of scripts. Many of the pages are difficult to read
and, lacking any index, the tracing of individuals is time-consuming.

Beginning in 2008, the Israel Genealogical Society, under the auspices of
the Montefiore Endowment, has been working on transcribing the censuses
into a modern Hebrew font, transliterate the names, and translate the data
into English. This immense labour is being undertaken by teams of dedicated
volunteers; and the censuses are now in the process of being published
on-line for the first time, together with a search engine in Hebrew and in
English to facilitate the finding of individual names and families.
Extended families are linked together, and there is a link to the digitized
manuscript page.

In all, there are 5 censuses of Eretz Israel (including Beirut and Sidon),
and one of Alexandria. At present, the census of 1839, 1840 (Alexandria)
and 1855 are on line at http://www.montefioreendowment.org.uk/census/. =20
The census of 1849 rowill follow in the next few months.

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Plans for a database of official name changes in Israel 1949-79 #ukraine

rosef@...

The Israel Genealogical Society is grateful to IAJGS for the awarding
of the 2010 Stern Grant at the 30th IAJGS conference in Los Angeles.
The first project this grant will be used for is the preparation of a
database of name changes publicized in the Yalkut Hapirsumim of the
Israeli Government starting in 1949. As the information is extracted
from each volume, the information will be added to a database on the
IGS website open to the public. IGS believes this new database will be
a helpful in breaking down brick walls in genealogical research in
Israel.
