JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Meaning of word in Yizkor Book "Sefer Serock" #general

Howard Orenstein

Genners,

In a chapter written in Yiddish in "Sefer Serock," appears a word that has quotes
around it: "Akovtses" (transliteration) The Hebrew characters are, >from right to
left, alef qof alef vav vav tsadeh ayin samech

The translated sentence:
We received notices that all our dear and close ones had gone into the gas chambers
of Treblinka and Majdanek, and we were advised not to go in the direction of Warsaw
because the "Akovtses"(?) are tormenting the Jews.

Please contact me if you have any ideas about the word and its meaning. Thanks.

Might there have been a street called Taunton which intersected Prince St. at that
time? This looks to me like the kind of address that was used to indicate a corner
building.

Could he have commuted to Taunton, perhaps by boat, at that time?

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Boston, Mass. department store question #general

Jeff Miller

I've been trying for many years to identify a family member who most likely changed
or Americanized his surname while living in the Boston area in the early 1900s.
I've obtained names of quite a few potentials for the family member in question,
but most records don't pan out as being related, or the trail disappears
completely, suggesting a possible name change.

New information is that a relative named Marvin GORE visited the Boston relatives
almost fifty years ago (1960s), and says, "I think I recall that they owned a
department store, Freddlies or something like that." The closest I can come to
this, in researching names of defunct Boston department stores, is Bradlees.

The original family name, which I suspect has been Americanized, or shortened, or
changed completely, was YUDELEVICH/YUDELOWITZ/YUDELEVITZ.

Any information on family connections or names of department store owners or
operators can be sent directly to me at my e-mail address, singingtm@...

Thank you.

In Israel, that has been the case all along, as with any but the smallest business,
though in our case it is VAT. I suspect that may be the case in Europe as well.

With governments suffering >from revenue shortfalls- this is a new revenue
"enhancement" by the state of New York (USA). Those who deal in information
services must, as of 1 September 2010, begin to charge, collect and remit sales
tax on their products.

Dear Genners,
I am searching for information regarding two Lipa sisters -Hava (1904) and Tauba
(1900), who arrived >from Iasi (Socola Str.) Romania to Ellis Island on 26 October
1920 stating that they were going to their brother unknown Freedman who lived on
148 Snyder Av. Philadelphia. I could not find arrival record for the brother not any
marriage record for the two sisters. My guess is that the brother took his mother
name. If any of this details ring a bell ,If not, I would appreciate any suggestions.
