Looking for candidate to visit the National Archives at College Park, MD #records #usa

Hi folks,

I need someone who’s willing to visit the National Archives in College Park, MD on my behalf, presumably when it reopens (see https://www.archives.gov/college-park. The candidate should preferably live in close proximity to the site, to prevent travel expenses since my budget is quite tight.

The nature of the records are captured reconnaissance images taken by the Nazis during WWII, identified by the archives as “Record Group 373”, for more information check out this blog https://unwritten-record.blogs.archives.gov/2019/09/11/researching-foreign-aerial-photography/.

The right candidate must obviously have minimal archival skills, but since the above blog provides a detailed guide for a newbie, therefore I believe there’s no experience needed.

Alexander,
I mentioned late 1700s as that is the time by which most Jews of the Russian empire had already received their last names.  We were not discussing location of said family in the 19th century, but the origin of their family name.

Here is the answer from Alexander Beider about this family name:
Mostchenik (Lida) or profession from "paving", or Moshenka village (Brest district).

The Jewish Galicia Museum has a new app which focuses on Poland’s rich Jewish history outside of the Holocaust. Due to the pandemic the museum was not open therefore, online access to the Museum became the only way of keeping the museum functioning. The app is free to download on the museum’s website-currently only available in English: https://jewishpoland.pl/. From here the app can be downloaded from Google Play for android and Apple Store for Apple products.

The museum is photography-oriented and the photographs showcases images from Jewish and non-Jewish sources from the 19th century until today. The photographs are categorized by era: pre-1918; inter-war Poland, Communist-era Poland and Poland following tis democratization in 1989.  More photos will be added.


Eventually the museum would like to publish newspaper front pages, Yiddish theater posters and documents.

The app was built with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Vilnius household registers - not just for Litvaks! #records #lithuania

If you don't normally read Lithuania messages on this list, this message is especially for you. It is about the Vilnius household registers, a project of LitvakSIG, and yes, of course Vilnius is in Lithuania. But the reach of the household registers extends far beyond Vilnius, because Vilnius, prior to WWII, was a center for commerce, medicine, the arts, scholarship, religion, and more. It attracted Jews from all over who came to Vilnius, perhaps to pursue a career, to go to school, to seek medical treatment, for religious studies, to conduct business, or for other reasons. The household registers are full of people who were born somewhere else, lived somewhere else, or were headed somewhere else then they left Vilnius.
 
Thus, even if you believe your relatives were never in Vilnius, it is worth your while to check in on this project from time to time - for example, right now, since we just announced our 13th batch of data, bringing the completed total to over 65,000 lines. The preview file attached to this message (which can also be downloaded with this link: https://www.litvaksig.org/images/custom/VHR%20surname%20lists/Previews-all.xls) will allow you to evaluate whether there is something of interest to you in our data. The preview file shows the full name and age/year of birth of each person in our data.
 
Just a couple of quick hits about the registers:
 
1. They were created during the period 1919-1940, but include people born prior to the interwar period.
 
2. They include persons of all ages, not just adults.
 
3. Fields include the full name and maiden name; names of the parents including maiden name of the mother; age or year of birth; place of birth; place of previous residence; dates of registration and departure; next destination.

Thank you, Corinne for additional information which was very helpful.  Margaret - what a wonderful painting - you are so lucky to have that treasure!
So, I finally found some family information that might be relevant, but I have no idea if it pertains to the subject in the photograph.

In 1913, my GG Uncle (Abraham Sladowski) living in East Prussia was seeking Citizenship.  A reference by a local official in East Prussia wrote a letter of recommendation for him.  In this letter it states "The eldest son is naturalized, served in the 52nd field artillery regiment and was released early". 
I see that the 52nd field artillery regiment has the following details in Wikipedia (below).  Would this information fit in any way to the person in the photo who was born in 1861 in Poland and lived in East Prussia, near Tilsit, from about 1890 onwards?

Mike,
Мoshchelnik (Мощельник) is identified as small town in Borovichi region of the Novgorod Oblast'. Back in 1897 during All Imperial Russia census, 183 Jews are identified as Residents of Borovichi uyezd (137 Jewish residents in town and 46 Jewish residents in rural vicinity - volost').

BTW, All Novgorod Guberniya in 1897 census had 1,999 Jewish residents. Fred Millner was not referring to 1700's but to 19th century data.
There are actually 10 villages by the similar names in Poland, mostly associated with the stream by the same name.

The Board of Special Inquiry (BSI) page , Ancestry.com image 164 of 165 shows the sisters held for Doctors Certificate on Dec 11, 1907,  with the hold withdrawn on Dec 17, but reinstated, and the deportation order executed on Jan 8 of 1908   The went back aboard the Statendam.  Only a few  BSI hearing records survived.    https://www.uscis.gov/records/genealogy/genealogy-notebook/researching-deportation-records

There is a Holland America Line website  https://stadsarchief.rotterdam.nl/zoek-en-ontdek/passagierslijsten/zoeken-op-passagiers/?mizig=231
that includes both incoming and outgoing passenger lists.   At the bottom of the page you can find a translate button to enable reading  it in English.
You may be able to find them on the return voyage.

On the Ellis Island passenger list for a relative arriving in New York in 1920, he listed his former residence as "Zanzire, Poland."
 
Does anyone have any idea to which town this may refer?  I had believed that this person had come from one of the towns in western Belarus, likely Dyatlovo/Zhetel or Novogorodok, but the ShtetlSeeker couldn't find anything nearby for the town of "Zanzire".

Alexander,
it seems unlikely that a last name would be formed from that specific village deep in Northern Russia.  There shouldn't have been any Jews in that part of Russia during the late 1700s.  A quick Google search brings up at least 2 villages with the same name in Poland, just like Fred indicated in his original post.

There is a simple solution to this question - Alexander Beider can provide the answer, but it's seems that the easiest way to ask the question if we knew what the original text looked like.  So I would like to ask if original source can be provided.

Yes, the original source is in the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe. It is all based on the "Judenedikt" of Grossherzig Carl Friedrich, dated Jan 13, 1809 in which he requested that all Jews in Baden have to adopt a "vererbbarer Zuname". I took a look at the collection when I was at LBI in New York many years ago. As mentioned, the original tables with "old name", "new name" is in the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe. I only checked the list for Hainstadt in Baden which was written in Wallduern and is contained in the list of the "Landvogtei Mosbach". GLA Abt. (department) 313, Nr. 1262 - but I guess that this number is not valid for the whole collection. It was more than 20 years ago that I was in those archives. Unfortunately, no family members were listed.
