Two weeks ago, I asked for your help in determining the fate of my
uncle, Menachim Yehuda GALAS, who appears to have been liberated >from
Terezin in April, 1945. Since then, I have followed up on virtually
every lead, but...sadly, nothing so far. I continue to pursue any and
all leads, of course.

assembly and prayer are likely to have existed in the villages of
Transcarpathia prior to the Holocaust. My particular interest is in
Sekernice (Sokirnitsa) and Veresmart (Velikaya Kopanya), to the east
and west of Chust (Khust) respectively. Did the local rabbi conduct
services in a permanent synagogue or some other village building or
did the community travel in to the nearby town to worship in the
several synagogues there?

Any information/advice would be much appreciated, as I prepare to
visit the area again in three weeks time.

offering all types of assistance in the Yizkor Book Project - and believe
me, this is so very much appreciated! In addition, over the last month I was
contacted by a number of people interested in setting up a project for

I continue to be amazed and encouraged by the many of you who contact me
offering all types of assistance in the Yizkor Book Project - and believe
me, this is so very much appreciated! In addition, over the last month I was
contacted by a number of people interested in setting up a project for
particular Yizkor Books and I'm happy to note some have made great leaps in
placing the projects online, even over a the last few weeks.

Together with these, there have been four new Translation Fund Projects
recently initiated: Debica, Poland, Leova, Romania, Olkeniki, Lithuania and
Grajewo, Poland. These were begun in order to engage professional

in Chicago. I have the names of the rabbis and wonder where she would have
obtained the get. Would she go to the first rabbi or the second or to a
council? Does anyone know where records might be kept or how I can
determine with which synagogue the rabbis were affiliated? They were: #1
in 1933 - Solomon RESH at 5036 N. Kimball Ave. and #2 in 1938 - S. Felix
MENDELSOHN at 5140 N. Central Park.

"Could Efroim Berka DUSHKES and Efroim Yankel DUSHKES (fathers of
children born Vilijampole 1857 and 1873) be the same person? Both listed as
son of Leyzer with same wife (Grune)."

Because I was involved with the Vilijampole births translation project, I
have the images of some of the original records, including those for 1857
and 1873.

The original records were recorded in both Hebrew and Russian. The two
records Elizabeth refers to above do not cite the given names Berka and
Yankel. The father is listed simply as Efroim, both in the Hebrew record
and the corresponding Russian record.

Translators do make mistakes. When common-sense doubts arise, the best way
to solve the mystery is to go back to the original record. Since the
translated record includes all the identifying data, you can request a
copy of the original record >from the archive that holds that particular
record set.
