Re: Help searching SCHWARTZ / RACHELSON (SCHWARTZBORT / RECHELSON) #general

Nancy Shaw <nancyshaw1@...>

I must share the most exciting news, thanks to the fabulous Jewish Gen
discussion list.

Initial props go to the impressive Barbara Zimmer, who turned up all
kinds of historical records on this family. Her info allowed me to get
from the sketchy 1940s-era information we had to find this family in
1930, 1920, 1910. Those records enabled confirmation that Max and
Pessie were indeed Mendel Schwartzbort and Pesia Rechelson of Ostrow
Mazowiecka, Russia (now Poland).

Then, Michael Richman contacted me about the Ostrow Mazowiecka
Research Family *and* with news - the names of Mendel and Pesia's
parents! He also put me in touch with the estimable Stan Diamond....
and it turns out that Mendel's mother's family - the Skalkas - are in
his tree!! Stan was able to deliver us the Skalkas back to 1775.

In 24 hours, my friend has gone >from knowing nothing, with only some
1940's era information, to knowing her home shtetl and family history
back to the 1700s. And probably doesn't even realize the supreme luck
of having ancestors in the tree of the executive director of
JRI-Poland :)

Thank you all!

Help in translation details of birth record in Russian #general

Ofer Biran <biranofer@...>

http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=15058

This is a birth record of Szija Warszniter, 1873. I appreciate details
of the father/mother - mainly the mother name. The JRI index specifies
the mother as "Haja Hena Krjcman" and father "Chaim" - while from
other records the mother name should be "Bela" or "Bayla Hena". I know
it's bad quality - hope bright/contrast can help...

Thanks !

Re: How do you start when you've got little info? (STERNBERG, Russia) #general

Hilary Henkin

Hi, Nancy,
Does your friend know where her grandfather is buried? If so, either
the cemetery or a helpful volunteer researcher may be able to check
the information on the gravestone and in the cemetery office. With
that information, (and assuming Grandpa died in the same community as
he's buried), she could try to get a death certificate. That could
indicate how long he was in the country, and a clue as to his place
of origin, as well as possibly parent names. Also, the "informant"
could be a relative. (and the "son of ____" on the gravestone could
be useful.)

If she can learn a date of death, it's possible he's in the SSDI (if
he died after the 1960s and wasn't exempt for some reason). Which
would of course name his parents and city & country of birth.

She might also try to get Nat Leon's birth certificate (I suspect
that's her father). That would provide both parents' names, ages
(therefore year of birth). Knowing more about Ida could lead to more
information about Joseph.

She might also try to get Joseph and Ida's marriage record. That
would have the names of their parents, (related?) witnesses, etc. I
think most marriage records ask if this is the first marriage, etc,
or if the groom is single, widowed, divorced, etc. That would
provide a clue as to whether he was married before.

Good luck, and let us know how things work out!

Suvainiskis, Lituania, Shoemakers #general

Harold Wyzansky <wyzansky@...>

I was checking the All-Lithuania Database for my grandmother Sarah FIRER's
(or as it was spelled in Boston either FERAR or FERRAR) home town of
Suvainiskis (also called Shevenishok), Lithuania, which is right on the
current border between Lithuania and Latvia.

The data, which consisted of the box tax records, was fascinating. The
records consisted of a snapshot on 12 July 1885 of the Box Tax records. Of
the 84 families listed, there were: 46 day laborers, 10 poor tradesmen,
three well-to-do tradesmen, two tailors, one hatter, one smith, and 21 (!!!)
shoemakers (one of whom was my great-grandfather Jacob FIRER).

I know that this is true because Jacob and two of his sons, Samuel FERRAR
and Nathan FERAR, were shoemakers or leather workers when they came to
Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1890's. My question is how such a small town
could support so many shoemakers. I thought that there might be a shoe
factory nearby, but then I read the Yizkor Book for the town and there is no
mention of any factories.

Does anybody have any information or ideas? Was there a shoe factory nearby
that closed in the 1890's before the events mentioned in the Yizkor book?

Thank you,
Harold Wyzansky
