Photographs of Lapichi: a small project #general

David Gordon

My grandfather and all his brothers and sisters were born in Lapichi, about fifty
miles southeast of Minsk. In 2001, I visited their home, spending many hours in
Lapichi. I later posted a travelogue of the Belarus portion of my trip on
JewishGen, including a number of pictures >from Lapichi. If you're interested, you
can find it at http://www.jewishgen.org/belarus/belarus_travelogue.htm

Over the years, I have come to regret not taking more pictures of Lapichi, even
though I spent a good part of the day there. Recently, it occurred to me that
others may have a few pictures that they would be willing to share more widely.
Those pictures might be recent ones or maybe even pictures >from another time.
I write now to propose a small project for Lapichi.

If people would be willing to share their photographs with me--either the originals
which I would scan and return, or copies of the photos--I would scan the pictures
("cleaning" up tears and eliminating blotches, if possible) and either post them on
the internet and/or make copies myself which would be available to anyone
interested.

All my good intentions are worth nothing if others don't have photos or aren't
willing to share them. Therefore, I am writing this initial post to see what other
photographs others have that they would be willing to share. You need not have a
large collection. Even one photograph that you have is one photograph the rest of
us have never seen. If enough people have pictures, we could reconstruct in a very
elementary but striking way--what "our" little shtetl once looked like.

I look forward to hearing >from people directly at my personal e-mail
(tiganeasca at gmail.com). Thank you!

P.S. Just in case: Shimon Gedalia HORWITZ and Anna GETZOFF (both born circa 1840)
had three children that I know of:
1-my great-grandfather Moses Aaron (Movsha Shimonov) (1859-1935),2-Gershon (Harris)
(1867-1941, who married Maryasha Rubin and came to Utica, NY before 1890), and
3-Sore (Sarah) (1871-1949) (who married Shlomo Friedland, lived in Rochester, NY).

My ggf, Moses Aaron HORWITZ married Chaya Ruchl DRAZIN (1862-1948, daughter of
Rabbi Eliezer Sender DRAZIN , >from Bobruisk) in 1880 on an estate named Zitsin,
which his father-in-law inherited >from a Prince Wittgenstein. Moses Aaron and Chaya
Ruchl had seven children: my grandfather Gershon/Harry (1889-1970), Solomon
(1884-1950), Shema/Celia (1886-1976), Peshe/Bessie (1894-1976), Zusman/Sam
(1896-1953), Abraham (1897-1985), and Eliahu/Alec (1900-1978).

Moses Aaron came to this country in 1906 and served as a rabbi in Washington DC of
Talmud Torah Congregation >from 1912 until his death in 1935. If anything here rings
a bell, let me know!)

In my family several Taubes (Toibe) became Tillie in the US. One was born in NY in
1889 as Matilda, Hebrew/Yiddish name Taube. Her parents were >from Lithuania.

The other was born in Makow Mazowiecki, Poland in 1898 as Taube and immigrated to
Brooklyn, NY in 1904. I have never found a Tzipporah in my ancestry to date.

Husi Website #general

Dear Husi descendants,

The ShtetLink website for Husi is now up. It is not finished and there are errors.
Please note that I will be adding other photos and documents you sent, as I learn
to handle the materials myself. Greg Meyer helped me with the technical side of
getting the site set up, and again I want to thank him for his help. It has truly
given me much pleasure assembling the items and I hope you will all enjoy it. I
welcome any suggestions you may offer.

Smorgon, Lithuania #general

My Uncle is going to visit his Ancestral hometown in Lithuania. The town is called
Smorgon and is in Vilnius. Anybody know of a possible contact in Lithuania that he
could meet with to get a tour of Smorgon. Any knowledge of the town cemetery. Any
suggestions to make his trip genealogically successful. Thanks.

Searching for info on Meyer Andor POLLAK #hungary

spollak21@...

Dear All,

I am a 2g searching for any information about my
grandfather Meyer Andor Pollak who lived in Miskolc, Hungary. He must
have been born around 1890-1900 but we do not know if he was born in
Miskolc. He was a tailor. We know nothing more about his family
& while I have scanned all the records available on line have been
unable to trace his birth, marriage or death. He married my
grandmother Bella Sima Grunzweig [ Feuer was also her famlly name] in
about 1920. We think they lived in Miskolc until my grandmother left
to go back to her home town of Jasina in about 1927. They had 3 sons,
my father Baruch [Vojtech Bela] Pollak survived & settled in
London, England.

If you have any info on my family we will be deeply grateful.
We have so little info & are eager to know more.

In thanks

Micah Salb asked about >I have to assume that Tillie=Matilda<
My mother's name was Tillie; her brothers called her Matilda which she didn't
particularly like, and I always thought they did that just to tease her. I've seen
the name Taube in some records, but I've never seen or heard Tzippora.
