Barbara Zimmer
Dear Genners,
Here is a summary of what I learned >from all of you about the given name Wolodia. Thank you for all your help. Barbara Zimmer Virginia Wolodja is a diminutive form of Vladimir, an old Slavic name which translates as "a ruler". Wolodia, pronounced Volodya, is the Russian version. The Yiddish equivalent is Velvel or Wolf; Zev in Hebrew. Many of these names became William in the US. In Polish the nickname is known as Wladek (Vladek) or Wladzio (u) as in Liberace's name variation >from the full name Wlodzimierz. Not to be confused with the other popular Polish nicknames Wladek (from Wladyslaw) or Waldek (>from Waldemar). The most famous bearer of that name in the 20th century is Wladimir Ilich Lenin, the Russian Bolshevik leader. The name is also popular among the Jews in modern Russia For more details, go to the excellent site about given names >from all over the world: http://www.behindthename.com/albomms@verizon.net |

I am looking for assistance with a translation of the front of a
photograph, contains pre-1917 Russian print. A copy of the photo was provided to me by a cousin who believes it may be of a STAM relative (perhaps a Golda TOCZYLOWSKI) >from Suwalki, but we do not know for certain. I am hopeful that the Russian language may yield some information as to where this photo was taken. A link to the image is here: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=14312 The back of the photo also has some Russian, but also either Hebrew or Yiddish handwritten text, and I am hopeful this will provide a name for the subject of the photo. A link to that image is here: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=14313 Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. Best, Evan Wm. Wolfson Pittsburgh, PA |

1929 Polish Business Directory

phylliskramer1@...
The 1929 Polish Business Directory has been digitized by Jewish
Records Indexing - Poland and subsequently posted on the web as a joint project of JRI-Poland in cooperation with JewishGen; you can browse it and search by town at: http://www.jewishgen.org/Jri-pl/bizdir/bd1929.htm. JRI-Poland and JewishGen are now considering a new Joint Project to make the information even more valuable to researchers. The directory has entries for more than 30,000 towns including many thousands of towns which are today part of Belarus and the Ukraine; but viewing the pages is not enough; we would like to create a database so that all genealogists can enter a surname and view every entry for that surname in all the towns. For that we need a project manager who can organize, recruit, train and manage hundreds of volunteers throughout the world. The scope is relatively managable as the pages are already online, and each entry is already available in print form in Latin characters; we anticipate only 4-5 fields per entry (surname/ business name, first name, occupation, town) but there are a copious number of entries. The completed database will become part of and searchable on both the JRI-Poland and JewishGen All-Poland databases. Do you want to 'give back' to those genealogists who have helped you along the way? Do you have 10 hours a week for the next year or so? Are you well organized, feel comfortable with Excel and willing to manage volunteers? If so, email Phyllis Kramer, VP Education, JewishGen Inc. at PhyllisKramer1@... Thank you!
