Family Bonds
While searching in the Polish archives for 18th c information from Glogow/Glogau (JRI-Poland does not list any), I found a notebook entitled "Repertorium der Grund-Acten von der vormaligen Glogauer Juden-Stadt". The date is given as 1821-1858, but it is clearly older than that. I can't figure out what this notebook is, but it includes lots of names. It also has maps of the Jewish quarter and who lived where, but I'm not sure when. There is writing in several hands from different time periods.
I'm hoping someone with expertise in this area might be able to figure out what this notebook is. Its physical location is the Archiwum Państwowe w Zielonej Górze, and the URL is https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/en/jednostka/-/jednostka/6642846
I could read enough to tell that it does not include the name I was looking for, but it could be very useful for others. Frank Bond |

I believe Samuel Unger was my great great grandfather. He left Poland in 1912 under the Russian pograms. My father is Stephen Robert Unger. His father, one son of Samuel, was Irving. His brother is Arthur Unger still alive at 91 in Boca Raton. Then there was Herbert. Irving passed away in the late 1970s from prostate cancer. Herbert, I am not sure. His mom are still alive. Carol Unger Rubin lives in Georgia. Please let me know if this is the same Samuel. I think he had a brother Jacob and another one John. I heard a story about one of them starting a community in the forests of Austria-Hungary.

Some years ago, Martha Lev-Zion generously translated and donated to JewishGen an abstract of the family register of the heads of Jewish families in Goldingen in 1842. Often these manuscripts contain more information than is included in the abstract, and I've been looking for the source. I've checked the Raduraksti site, but it doesn't (yet?) include family lists, and there's no 1842 Addendum to the 1834/35Revision List for Goldingen posted on the site. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to an online posting of the source. Thank you

The Isle of Man “rich sound archive” will be digitized and put online as part of a British Library project. The archive will include recordings of the last native Manx speakers and wartime internees.
There are about 600 records held at the Manx National Heritage (https://manxnationalheritage.im/).The recordings also include "first-hand memories of working in the island's busy guest houses" and the atmosphere of the last night of Bushy's Brew Pub in Douglas on 9 January 1998.

Thought I would throw another thought into the mix.
My paternal grandmother arrived in the USA in 1921 with 4 children, ages 20, 16, 12 and 9.
My grandfather, her husband, did not arrive until 1924. He was denied passage with the family because of trachoma -- an eye disease. My grandmother and the children came to live with her brother-in-law, my grandfather's brother.

My grandmother and her sister, who were the two oldest of five children, came first. Then their father came a year later with the next oldest daughter. One year after that their mother arrived with the youngest two (a daughter and a son).

From my experience, MyHeritage is least accurate. They claim I have a small percentage from Central America. Not even close. It's possible that ancestors way, way back emigrated to Central America and descendants have had their DNA tested with MyHeritage. But that doesn't make my roots any amount of Central American. Ancestry has the largest database, so they are apt to be more accurate. They peg me as 100% Eastern European Jew. All four of my grandparents and two of my great grandparents emigrated to the US (New York) from Eastern Europe.

Researching Tzalel Blachman of Apt/Opatow

I am researching my paternal great grandfather Betazlel /Tzalel/Tzaleh Blachman for Apt/Opatow, Poland.
He was born to Gabriel Blajchman and Chia Chana Mer in Opatow in 1855 and died in Opatow about 1900.
He was a big "macher" in Opatow, an educated man that was known to be able to get things done. His nickname was "Der roiteh avocat" although I have no documentation that he was an actual lawyer. He helped numerous men avoid the draft into the Russian army, with bribes and exaggerated claims of physical challenges.
I am looking for any information about him, including information on his address in Opatow, his siblings, and any stories about people that he helped in Opatow.
He had 9 children:

Looking for Gussie Deutsch

We are looking for Gussie/Augusta Deutsch. We don’t know her maiden name. We assume she was Jewish. She was born about 1886 in Austria-Germany. She was married to Daniel Deutsch (1875-@1935). He lived in Hazelton, PA, where he was a shoemaker, and married Gussie around 1901. They had their first child, Helen, in 1901, in Hazelton, and then Thelma in 1903. They moved to New York about 1911 where their son Seymour was born. The best evidence we have about Daniel is his WWI Draft Registration Card, where he lists his wife Augusta and their address as 334 E 123rd St., NYC. Here Daniel is a shoe salesman, and is totally blind in his left eye. Daniel must have died before 1935, because Gussie is listed in the 1940 US Census as a widow living with her daughter Thelma Deutsch Friedberg in 1935 as well as 1940. We would be most appreciative if you can tell us more about Gussie. False Lead: There is a divorce record of Plaintiff August Friest against Defendant Daniel Deutsch in 1924. This is probably not our Gussie because she and Daniel are seen living together in the 1930 US Census at 334 E 123rd St. Thank you for your help David Jacobowitz |

I probably share too many Yizkor book excerpts about market day in the shtetls. But the reason I am drawn to them is the vibrant picture of life that each presents. The reconstructed conversations that let you hear the way people speak and what they say. The portraits of real characters that they offer. The feel for the (shall I say, “robust”) haggling in each negotiation about a purchase. “Once Shmulye Feyde said to a peasant while haggling; – You want two gildn for such a handful of wood (30 Russian kopeks). I can carry it home on my shoulder! – If you carry it home all at once, take it without cost! – The peasant said to him. – Shmulye said, I hold you to your word.” You’ll have to read the excerpt to see how that turned out. But when all was over, it was off to a tavern where “several glasses of 95 proof spirits were drunk, roasted goose was eaten and they went as good friends. And, rounding out these accounts, dealing with shoplifters — “those who would miss no opportunity at lifting anything they could lay their hands on.” Here are excerpts from the book of Rohatyn in Ukraine, and Czyzew-Osada, Kolbuszowa and Brzozów in Poland.
