Kormend ShtetLinks page update #hungary

Judy Petersen

Hello,
Just to let everyone know that my Kormend ShtetLinks page has been
updated. There is now more information on the Holocaust in Kormend, including
pictures of the town's Holocaust memorial and synagogue commemorative plaque,
and death records recorded in the late 1940s and early 1950s, as well as
transcribed census records >from 1771 and 1774.
Many thanks to Andrew Lenard for his assistance with translations.
Hoping this will be of interest!

Re: ShtetLinks Project Report for October 2009 #usa

the recent shtetlinks report made me think. i noticed that there are almost no hungarian places in the report. and very few hungarian "shtetl" pages altogether.

personally, i have an aversion to the term "shtetl" - for me it evokes images >from fiddler on the roof, and the little sleepy villages of mostly poland/russia. somehow it doesn't quite fit in with the image of budapest (before the war), which was a glamorous and cosmopolitan capital city, competing with vienna and paris. and about one third jewish. not quite tevya's little "shtetl".

it reminds me a little of the story of jewish emigrants, on their way to israel, who stopped in a mediterranean port, and were shocked to find that the local (sephardic) jews couldn't speak yiddish. "how can you be jewish and not speak jewish?" they asked.

well, many hungarian jews didn't speak yiddish, and didn't live in shtetlach, either.

but we should, nevertheless, set up commemorative pages to honour our vanished communities. maybe we should just call them "kehillos" or "hitkozsegek", and then get on with the work of documenting them.

I noticed the acronym nun-yud-vav after a name.
What does this mean?
Thank you

if you have a copy of the record, it might help to post a scan of it on viewmate.

the only thing that comes to mind is that it might be "kohanita", a notation that the groom's father was a kohen? (not exactly an occupation.)

the spelling looks like. The placement looks the same as other
records I have seen where this is the father's Occupation.
