Dear Latin American SIG:

I am new to doing genealogy. So I apologize if I am asking what may be
obvious to others. My grandfather had a nephew by the name of Erich
Eichner who came to Rio de Janeiro >from Vienna Austria in the late
1920s or early 1930s. He started a bookstore around 1935 called
Livraria Kosmos. My English and Portuguese attempts to contact this
store (email and regular mail have gone unanswered). I believe he
died in the 1970s and is buried in the Caju Cemetery. Is their a way
to get a photo of the grave site or a copy of an obituary? Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely
Judy Schulman

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen KASSEMOFF surname research #general

Angie Elfassi

My paternal grandfather was born with the surname KASSEMOFF in Rezekne, Latvia,
and I have archival documents saying they had lived also in Novo-Alexdrandrovsk,
Lithuania.

Recently I spoke to a man (here in Israel), whose surname is KASSEMOFF.

As my KASSEMOFF line are Levis I wanted to find out if the man was also a
Levi and therefore a possible relative.

He told me that his name wasnt originally KASSEMOFF but that his ancestor
had bought the name over 100 years ago to avoid conscription.

I am familiar with families who have changed the 2nd son's surname to another
surname to avoid conscription, but I wondered if anyone had heard about
"buying" a name.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen HODES - SLESS #general

J Hodes <j.hodes@...>

I am researching my HODES family tree and have a query that hopefully
somebody may be able to solve. I believe that there may be a
connection between the HODES and SLESS families, but I don't know
what.

I have identfied My great grandfather Solomon/Samuel HODES and his
brother Robert HODES (aged 21 and 23 respectively) on the 1901
Scottish census as lodgers, staying with a Sarah and Jacob Sless in
Glasgow, Scotland. Jacob and Sarah have a bunch of kids which appear
to replicate HODES naming patterns (eg Freda, Nellie etc). My hunch
is that Sarah Sless is nee HODES, and possibly a half sister or aunt
of Robert and Solomon HODES.

Is anyone familiar with either the name SLESS or a HODES connection?

Another Belfast HODES I have found is David HODES, buried in
Carnmoney, who died in 1948. I have no further details and would like
to know how he fits into the rest of the Belfast HODES. Can anyone
shed any light on him?

If you are more comfortable contacting me directly, my email is
jonathan@...

Kind regards and thank you in advance
