I've read many posts about surname origins, pronunciations, etc.
So here's a query I bet someone can answer. Rochma GRUSZKA: she was always referred to by her son as being called "Gruszkevicz" not Gruszka. Might anyone have an explanation for this? She was >from Southern Poland. Would Gruszkevicz be Yiddish for Gruszka? Polish & Russian indices list her as Gruszka. In her same town there is also a family called Gruszkevicz; could be related or not. What might be the Yiddish version of ROCHMA? Does Gruszka have a definition? If you believe your response might help others, please post. If not, respond to me privately. -- Ann Linder Florida USA Researching In Sosnowie: WENGER, WEGIER var. STERN Family from Zuentersbach

Linda Shefler
In researching my family >from Zuentersbach, I am attempting to piece
together various disconnected STERN families. If anyone has any information on the following, or has any connection to the Stern family from Zuentersbach, I would greatly appreciate hearing >from you. A) Gedalia STERN whose wife Ranche (?) died in childbirth in June 1880. He had a daughter Fromed who died in 1892. B) Another Gedalia STERN (who I suspect is the same person) (probably born mid 1800s) whose was married to Hannchen (born ~1855). Hannchen immigrated to America in 1939 with her daughter Klara PLAUT (and yes, the manifest indicates that she was 85 years old) and had the following children: Rita, Rosa married to Max HALLE, Solomon (born 1887) married to Malchen (Meta) with children Guenther, Ingeborg and Marianne, Jenny (born 1890) married to Arnold NUSSBAUM with daughter Ilsa (married to Ernest HALLE), and Klara married to Salomon (Salli) PLAUT with son Werner (Warren). C) Arnold STERN who in died in Zuentersbach in 1878. D) Salomon STERN >from Zuentersbach who was married to Made (Malchen) GOLDSCHMIDT >from Sterbfritz. Their children were all born in Zuentersbach: Markus (Moses) 1868-1942; Emil born 1871; Sigmund 1874-1943; Roesel, Rescha and Levy. Thanks so much in advance! I've posted a scan of a postcard written in Yiddish that if someone
would be kind enough to translate to English for me I'd be most grateful. It was written in Aug 1950 by a man named Yitschak in Tel Aviv Israel to his male cousin, a Holocaust survivor who was in Straubing Germany at the time. I'm curious if there is anything in the postcard about pianos or other musical instrument or if a newborn child is mentioned. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer. Pls respond privately. http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=13635 -- Ann Linder Florida USA Researching In Sosnowie: WENGER, WEGIER var. Naming the newborn-Jewish custom
#hungary
alexpmiller@...
Newborns are named after deceased ancestors. That has been the general
Jewish custom. Is there something more specific? Who gets named after the paternal ancestors vs. the maternal ones? Any time limitations after the death. Naming of the first born? Different rules for boys/girls? Any articles on the subject? Alex Miller PA |

logisticians for a couple of centuries. In the early 19th century (say >from the Napoleonic era through the Crimean War), army wagon trains could haul supplies at about 20 miles a day on decent dry road surfaces, with significant reductions for mud and hills. A number of roads in that part of Ukraine were designated Post Roads and probably were well designed. Dave Smith I'm curious as to how much time it might take for a family of four Jewish |

Looking for Louis GILBERT

Michael S. Clinton
I'm looking for information on my Grandfather Louis Gilbert. He was born 15
November 1897 in Veresnitsa, Belarus to Joseph Gilbert and Fannie GOLBERG. He came to the US with his brother David M Gilbert in 1914. By 1918 he was in Detroit Michigan. He married Jean Cooperman, 6 March 1921 in Mt Clemens, Michigan and had five children. Sometime in the early 1940's he left his family. He could have been in California in the late 1940's and later could have been in NY. The information I'm looking for is 1) Any information on Louis before 1918. Except for the birth date all pre 1918 information is unconfirmed. 2) What happen to him after he left the family in the early 1940's including any information concerning his death.
