Philly2009 Update - Great Airline Fares Available #courland #latvia

David Mink

The Philly2009 conference is coming up very quickly: about 2 weeks.

Airlines are now offering great airfares so this is a wonderful
opportunity to make last minute decision to attend. Check out prices
-- you may be very pleased with a really good deal.

More sleeping rooms have been added to our block at the conference
hotel, the Philadelphia Sheraton City Center, so there is space
available at the conference rate (you get complimentary internet
access in your guest room). It is a great hotel and you will enjoy
staying there.

If you register right now, you can still purchase any or all of the
optional fee-based items that must be purchased before Sunday, July
19, 2009 at 11:59 pm US central time. The choices are great: a
Welcome Dinner, Breakfasts with Experts, SIG Luncheons, Tours,
Workshops, and the Banquet.

To register for the conference: go to www.philly2009.org You can
make your hotel reservation right >from that site also.

See you soon,

Rose Hoffman - birth - Paris #france

mpwaddell@...

Dear Listers,
A cousin, Rose HOFFMAN, was born in 1873, to Etta and Aaron Hirsh
HOFFMAN. In the UK 1901 census, it says she was born in Romania but in
the 1911 census, filled in by the householder, her husband, Leon, is
written "France". Since her cousins, my grandmother and siblings, were
all born in Paris, France, I would expect that she too was born in Paris
but it would be nice to have it confirmed, together with her exact date
of birth - I only know the year. They were born in the 9th
arondissement. Maybe Rose was, too. Is there any way to discover
whether she was born in Paris?
Myra Waddell (Adelaide, South Australia)

Also a member to this family was Rabbi Albert Lowy, born 1817, also Usinov,

Could someone please help, find the Lowy family? Dorrit lives in Chile and

help with Polish translations #poland

I have 6 Polish marriage records that I need translated. I feel bad
posting too many of these on Viewmate, especially since the marriage
records are twice as large as the birth & death records. I like full
translations, not just excerpts. These appear to be good copies >from
the FHL. If you can help, please e-mail me directly.

Becoming Editor Emerita #lithuania

Judith27

Dear LitvakSIGdom,

As I retire and move on to the honorary title of Editor Emerita (okay, for
Latin grammatical purists Editor Emeritus), I want to thank everyone for
their very kind words about my ten year tenure as the founding LitvakSIG
Online Journal Editor. Over the past decade, it has been a unique pleasure
to work with so many talented authors all around the globe who gave so
willingly of their unique knowledge, expertise, and perspective about so
many different aspects of Litvak Jewish life, history, and genealogy.

I also want to thank the many members of the LitvakSIG Board of Directors,
past and present, who have always been so supportive of the Online Journal
and all its many facets, including the Poetry Page, especially Davida Noyek
Handler, Co-founder and Past President, and our current President, David
Hoffman.

Hopefully, soon, the final two articles I have been working on recently
should be going up online. One article, by Esther Rechtschafner, focuses
on the shtetl of Sveksna, and includes a photographic tour, and the other
is a "Detailed Study of the Census Records for a Jewish Community: The
Example of the Small Town of Zeimelis, the Censuses of 1816-1853" by
Anatolij Chayesh. I'm sure you will enjoy perusing both of these articles
once they are up on the website.

As always, to read any of the articles, memoirs, fiction, and poetry that
are already part of the LitvakSIG Online Journal line-up, just go to the
Table of Contents page located at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Litvak/HTML/OnlineJournals/Journal.htm

I look forward to reading the articles the new editor will bring to the
LitvakSIG Online Journal...

All the best,
Judi Langer-Surnamer Caplan, Editor Emerita

Re: Survey of First Name Origin and Meaning #galicia

Far be it >from me to discourage anyone >from carrying out a project
they find interesting, but there are already entire dictionaries
that do this, with the advantage that the authors generally have
some degree of linguistic understanding, not to mention study, to
support their assertions regarding name origins.

Since your compilation will be using information >from anyone who
cares to contribute, it will no doubt accumulate many of the urban
legends and other common errors circulating among the general
population, in addition to the correct information that some will
contribute. What advantage will your compilation have to off-set
the lack of expertise, and occasional basic error, of your
contributors?

you have the time I invite you to fill out the form online here:

You can fill out the form as many times as you like. Please feel free to add
information on your own name, the names of your family members, etc. If you
can, please share this survey with other people you think might be
interested. I'm trying to collect as much data as possible on first names,
and the more people that fill out the survey, the better.

Request for help with Galician research #galicia

Sharon/Peter Haas <haases@...>

Hi Fellow SIGers,

I would be very grateful for help >from any kind-hearted person
who’s a bit proficient with early 19th century Galician genealogy
records, and willing to provide some inputs. I have made
extensive use of the “JRI-Poland Search Database”, as well as the
"All-Poland" one and also JOWBR, and have been able to trace my
maternal ancestors back to Tarnow, Poland (Krakow Wojewodztwa).
Trouble is, I’ve now run into dead ends and don’t know how to
proceed to go further back in time. The help I would welcome
falls into the following:

1. As a general rule, is one usually able to find more extensive
b/m/d information in LDS or PSA records, than what is available
within the JRI-Poland database?

2. Two recurring Galician surnames I run into, sound neither
Polish, nor Austrian. How can I go about tracing their
more-or-less “origins”?

a. BATIST
b. MAREHSE/MARESSE/MARCHSE

3. How might I go about finding b/m/d info (hopefully on-line)
on the following ancestors. I’m pretty sure they’re all >from the
Krakow Wojewodztwa (or possibly Vienna, Austria).

a. The parents of Hersz LANDAU (who was born 1827)
b. The parents of Mendel BATIST (who was born 1817)
c. The parents of Golde BATIST (who was born 1808)
d. The parents of Josef FALEK (who was born 1845)
e. The parents of Sara MARCHSE/MARESSE/MAREHSE
(who was born 1852)

Thanks for your consideration.

Peter Haas -- California

Meaning of AGAD Birth Record Entry #galicia

Alan Weiser <alanboy@...>

What does entry Goldstein/Weiss mean?

In the JRI-PL AGAD birth indexes I find listings such as
Goldstein/Weiss. I know there are special meanings when names are
separated by an f, r or v; such as, Fine r Gold. What does it
mean when there are no intervening letters? I find this mostly
under Maiden Name of the birth mother in the birth indexes.
