Book in Slovak language on Jews in Bratislava in 1940 #hungary

lgottesman@...

For those who are interested, I located a copy of a published doctoral dissertation titled (in Slovak) "Zidovska Komunita v Bratislave v Roku 1940" by Petra Larisova, publsihed in Bratislava in the year 2000, ISBN 80-88997-05-4. In English, the title is "The Jewish Community in Bratislava in the year 1940." It appears to be part of a series of Holocaust-related books (the copyright reads "Dokumentacne stredisko holokaustu 2000) published in Bratislava, Slovakia.

It contains what appears to be a census of the Jewish community, including lists showing family name, first name, street address, date of birth, place of birth, and occupation. I say "appears" because I don't know Slovak. I did find the names of my aunt and uncle who lived in Bratislava before the war listed in this book.

If anyone is interested in participating in arranging for an English-language
translation of this book, or can refer me to someone who can translate it, please
let me know.

searching CASSELL, NEUNBERG, GOLDINGER #unitedkingdom

Hi

I'm searching for a lost family that of my great aunt Ethel Cassell (nee
Levine) and her husband Isaac Cassell. My search starts in South Africa and
having followed through on the lead in Isaac Cassell's Hebrew name
(Yitchack b'r Moshe) on his grave stone I have been able to find another
lead in my never ending search for their descendent and other relatives.
Their graves mention a son and for Isaac a brother, nieces and nephews.

Facts:
? Ethel Levine dep Southampton 4 Nov 1922 destination Cape ? South
Africa. Ship Arundel Castle ? Source data: Shipping Manifest
? Brother Nathan Levine, his wife and child already in Port Elizabeth
(early 1922)? Nathan minister at PE Hebrew Congregation:
Source The JC and Shul plaque
? Isaac & Ethel living 2 ?Rhose?? Road, Sea Point Cape Town 29/9/1957
Source: Letter >from Issac to my grandad.

Conjecture

UK Birth and Census records have a Cassell Family:
Father Moss/Moses Cassell b West Hartlepool 1867
Mother ? Sarah (nee Goldinger) b Poland (Nat BS) 1864
Children: Leibe born Jarrow 1889
Rose b Northumberland 1888
Isaac b Newcastle 1983
Myer b Durham 1894

Sarah Godinger was the daughter of Levy Golding (1832) born Poland
and Dord Neunberg born Preußen (1841) daughter of Julius Neunberg (1805)

Moss/es Casell was the son of Abraham Cassell (born Russia 1840) and Hannah
?? Born Russia abt 1840

Both families show in the England 1871 census.

SA Shipping Records list sources through SA Jewish Rootsbank list
Ship Scot 11/2/1899 Passage Southampton ? Cape Town
Mrs Cassell
Miss Rose Cassell
Miss Bete Cassell
Master Isaac Cassell
Master Myer Cassell

A Mr H Cassell arrived 20/11/1897 ? could be transcript error and be Mr M
Cassell??

There is no reference to the family found in the UK records after the census
of 1891, birth records exist as above, family not found in 1901 UK census

SA Rootbank record has Mr Moss Cassell (B West Hartlepool) and wife Sarah
(nee Goldenger) in the 1929 Yearbook ? conflicting dates as it has arrival
as 1886 and marriage 1886 ? marriage confirmed as 1886 in UK records

Additional Grave records found again Pinelands 1
Sarah Cassell age 82 9 Jan 1946 Ref: 2b 2452
Rose Cassell age 81 20 June 1968 Ref: 5b 2453
Moss Cassell age 80 17 March 1948 Ref: 2b 2451

There is also an incoming passenger record for a Myer Cassell ?born 1895
(General Manager & Co Director)arriving >from the Cape into Southampton in
Feb 1950 Travelling with him are Haidee Cassell age 50 (Housewife) and Miss
June L Cassell age 23 student.. They travelled 1st class proposed UK address
9 Camomile St London EC3 ? future permanent residence described as within
British Empire as opposed to England/Wales etc

I could be totally wrong but there are a number of similarities here which I
suggest makes this one and the same family

If any of this makes sense to any member then please do contact me.

GULIN/KRAMER Family #latinamerica

Michelle Essers

Hi

I am looking for the family of Nisan GULIN.

He emigrated to Argentina >from Odessa or Lithuania/Poland. He was in
Argentina around 1924.
He married his benefactor's daughter and they had 5 children - 3 sons
and 2 daughters.
2 of the sons, Howard and Steven, moved to America in the 1970's and
the other children remained in Argentina.
Nisan was alive in 1974 living in Argentina.
This is about all I know of him.

R' Yosef of Breznitz #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Yesterday I reposted a message I sent in Jan 09 regarding an ancestor,
R' Yosef of Breznitz. Since Jan. there were several changes which I
did not note:

I've contacted Aharon Hoizman who wrote the book on the Karliner
chassidut and he does have any information over and above what he
wrote in the book. Secondly, according to family theory, our family
name before it was SCHECHTER was ROSENBOIM, so presumably Yosef and
his son Yisrael (of Ostrov) would have been ROSENBOIM.

We know that Yisrael made aliya in the 1830s to Zfat and/or Tveria. I
know that there were noted immigrations of Chassidim at that time to
these cities which he probably joined. His children stayed in Europe.
In the book "Sefer Tveria" published in the 1970s there is a list of
family names of people who lived over the centuries in Tveria. The
problem is that the editor did not include the sources where the names
were found or first names.

I was hoping that someone close to the Karlin/Lechowitz "dynasty" of
admori"m would know about this yosef and his son Israel, as Yisrael's
son (Yosef) was married into the family of Reb. Aharon (and Pearl) the
Admo"r of Lechowitz, during the mid 19th cent.
There is a theory that Yisrael's son, Yosef, may have taken the family
name of the Admo"r of Lechowitz.
If anyone knows of a ROSENBOIM >from Breznitz I would be happy to hear >from them.

Need help in South Africa #general

Jef Barnett <JBarnett@...>

According to recent information >from an older relative, a family member who
first came to the US later went to live in South Africa. Using a website SA
Jewish Rootsbank, I found a possibility.
Ephraim Gottlieb (per Arrivals List 1925) arrived in SA 1925-12-7, steamer
Windsor Castle. I was trying to find the actual manifest for this person
but nothing came up when searching the manifest section of the site (which
is incomplete)

Hopefully someone in South Africa knows where the original files are and can
try to get me a copy or find other information about this person. The
original town on the arrival lists shows as "Roogann" but it might have been
Rozan, Poland where my family was from.

Can anyone help or make any other suggestions?

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Need help in South Africa #general

Dear Genners,

I am looking for address of Gomel city administration office or industry
office.

I am searching for mother’s brother Abram RYCHTER or Abram
GRUSZNIEWSKI/HRUSZNIEWSKI.

Before the war, he was Director of one the factories in Gomel or in Russian
is Homel.

He was arrested by the NKVD and sentenced to death. He died before 1938 in
USSR.

He had a wife and two children, sons name Max Rychter or Abram
Gruszniewski/Hruszniewski and daughter name is unknown, also wife name is
unknown.

It is also possible that wife has changed her name to her maiden name?

After the war, we have searched for him and his family thru International
Red Cross but no information was ever found.

The information that he was Director of a factory in Gomel is new to us.

I am trying to locate what has happened to his wife and 2 children? May be
they left Russia after the war for Israel?

If anyone has any personal information about him.

Please contact me personally.
