Re: Chust and Csorna -Jewish records
#hungary
Vivian Kahn
Khust is the current name of the place that was formerly Huszt, Maramaros, Hungary. When searching for older records more likely to have good results if you use the Hungarian name. Also, do a wider search for GRUNVALD records by entering Maramaros or Huszt or Csorna in Any Field.

Aline Petzold
Hello All:
I am trying to track down information regarding my aunt's first husband, known as "Costica" Caufman. His formal given name might be Constantin. He was married to my aunt, Sali ( Sara) Sternberg, and lived in Bucharest Romania. I believe that they divorced some time before 1955,when my aunt came to live with us in Canada. I am wondering if anyone has any information regarding marriages/divorces in Bucharest in the 1940s-50s. Thanks, Aline Sternberg Petzold, <linypetzold@...> St. Paul MN |

Re: Identify military uniform and medals

Great photo! As others have noted, the top medal looks like an example of the WWI German Iron Cross https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Cross (different versions were produced, and it is hard to see any details, but it likely looks like the photo attached).
The lower medal is harder to make out, but it seems to be the Friedrich August Cross 2nd Class from the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. According to various websites, this medal was established in September 1914 for all ranks and was the Grand Duchy’s equivalent of the Prussian Iron Cross for bravery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friedrich-August-Kreuz -- Robert Murowchick <robertmurowchick AT gmail.com> Researching these family links: |

Hello, I have never been able to find the marriage certificate of one of my grandfather’s brothers: Josef Lubasz (or Lubasch) born January 12 1897 in Krakow married to Raia Lerner. The only information I have is that he survived the war in Warsaw, but Raia and their two sons perished during the Holocaust. Where can I locate their sons birth certificate or any information of when they were born and their names? I would appreciate any help |

Dr John MICHAEL inscription on watch.
#general
Robyn Dryen
Dear Genners
AJGS has received an enquiry from a watch collector about an inscription on a pocket watch in his possession. It was bought in England about 30 years ago and the watch is thought to date from around 1900. The inscription reads: For Dr John Michael in memory of his grandfather. Who so missed his birth by minutes, and is much beloved as a great Zionist. He and his son fought so valiantly, and for the Zionists. It is not clear whether the reference is to a paternal grandfather and therefore a MICHAEL (or variant), or to an unnamed maternal grandfather. Nor is it certain that these are Jewish Zionists. My question is whether anyone has a Dr John Michael in their tree with ancestors involved in the early days of Zionism. Any assistance would be welcome. Robyn Dryen Sydney, Australia |

#announcements
#usa
Jan Meisels Allen
Yonkers (NY) Public Library (YPL) announced the launch of a new digital library of local newspapers: The Yonkers News Archives. The Yonkers News Archive contains over 1.2 million pages of digitized newsprint from local newspapers ranging from the Civil War era to the late 1990s. This is a partnership between YPL and newspapers.com part of the Ancestry family of companies.
Visitors to the Yonkers News Archive can “clip,” print, and save scanned images of newspaper articles. They can also create a free https://www.newspapers.com/ account to organize and share clipped articles.
YPL shared its extensive microfilm collection, which contains over 950 reels of microfilmed local newspapers, with Newspapers.com. The digitized publications include the Yonkers Examiner (1857-1863), Yonkers Gazette (1868-1893), Yonkers Statesman (1863-1932), Yonkers Herald (1891-1932), and the Herald Statesman (1932-1998).
The full Yonkers News Archive can be accessed by visiting any of YPL’s three locations and connecting to one of its public computers or using the free wireless network onsite. https://www.ypl.org/research/yonkers-news-archive/. If you access the site remotely, you will be directed to Newspapers.com.
Yonkers NY is the fourth largest city in New York State, and largest city in Westchester County, located directly north of New York City.
