Tatyana may be right about Bieżuń.

I see on the 1884 Manhattan birth cert of their daughter Dora GOLDBERG, that Lena's maiden name was VANGER.

A soundex search for VANGER finds the name occurs in Bieżuń records as WENGER.  
GOLDBERG also appears in the town's records, but GOLDBERG is also a very common name.

Did Davis GOLDBERG belong to a landsmanshaftn?  That could be a clue to his town.

Looking for advice for conservation of letters #holocaust

My family has recently unboxed 75 pages of letters written by an uncle and his fiance who were unable to emigrate from Holland during WWII. The uncle didn’t survive the war. The letters were written to relatives in the US and tell the story of two people’s desperate attempt to live normal lives while trying to escape their dire situation and not worry family in the US. The pages have all been scanned and are now in archival bags. We would like to donate them to an historical society or Holocaust Museum where they can be conserved and shared. We’ve considered Joods Monument, USC Shoah Foundation, and US Holocaust Memorial Museum but I am wondering if there is a better place to start inquires. Or even if they are only of interest to us. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Seeking professional to transcribe/translate many pages of German (18c-19c) #germany #translation

A few years ago, I requested scans of just about everything I could find in the Staatsarchiv Nürnberg that related to my family in Hüttenheim-in-Bayern. It came to about 1,000 pages, some of which are effectively blank or are cover sheets with very little writing on them. 
 
I've worked on them over the intervening time, and it's time to admit that while in theory I can eventually make it through any of them, in practice it will take me far too long to get through all of them.
 
(1) Does anyone have recommendations for where to find a professional to transcribe these?
 
(2) How much should I expect to pay and/or what is the process for arriving at an estimate based on the actual documents in hand? 
 
(3) If I decide that I can't afford to do all of them, can I also reasonably ask the transcriber to select which pages look like they'll be most valuable to translate? 
 
(4) Would adding in translation significantly increase the cost or should I have them do that too while they're at it?

So happened in a posad or township of Tyszowce on January 18, 1896, at 8 pm. We are announcing that in the presence of witnesses Moshka Borg 77 years old and Joseph (Iosiph) Oiven 36 years old, both school children, residing in village Tyszowce entered into a religious marital union at 7 pm on this date between Mordko-Yusf Vais, bachelor, 26 years old - son of Leyzor and Khai-Shandli, Mr. and Mr.s Vais, both are merchants residing in the town Lenel, Lyubartow Uyezd- and Toubo-Mirle Zinger, twenty-seven years old, a daughter of late/deceased Moshka Leisor and Khai-Netvi, Mr. & Mrs. Zinger(ov), residing in the township Tyszowce. This marriage was preceded by three announcements on December 30, 1895; January 6, 1896; and January 13, 1896, at Tyszowce Jewish Synagogue. The newlyweds are hereby testifying that they did not enter into any contractual or otherwise agreements prior to this marriage. The religious service was performed by kazyonny "казённый (kazjónnyj) (relational) state, government · official, public" rabbi Joseph Goldfarb. This marriage was performed in the presence of the witnesses and is hereby signed by such.

Given name of Rosenberg woman from Crailsheim #germany

I am attempting to decipher the given name of a woman from Crailsheim (never mind that my own illegible penmanship is a family trait I have traced back at least 4 generations, and that I am married to a physician whose penmanship is almost as undecipherable as my own).

 

As with almost all Jewish German women during the era, her middle name was Sara.

 

The 1939 German Consulate card (attached) from Jerusalem shows that her birth surname and marriage surname were each Rosenfeld; as with almost all Jewish German women during the era, her middle name was Sara; she was born 3 November 1900, and married in 1922 (month & date not clear) with one daughter; her father's name was Immanuel and her mother was Helene Sara (b. 5 July 1868 in Crailsheim).

 

This Consulate Card information is consistent with the Baden-Württemberg Landesarchiv link http://www.landesarchiv-bw.de/plink/?f=1-442326-98 , which shows the same undecipherable given name, and two older siblings, Max and Agnes.

 

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

The first letter does not match other upper case G letters in previous pages of the manifest. The first letter also doesn't match an upper case N, seen in the last column 'NY' for New York. I'm not sure what the town/city in column 10 is, or if this is some type of abbreviation.

Perhaps the naturalization papers for the father Charles Simon would clear up what the town of birth is.

Patricia Papernow asked about finding more information about her PAPERNOW family members born in Sevastopol, Ukraine in the 1890s.  Alan Shuchat responded that while the Mormons' Family History Library had filmed some Jewish records from Crimea, they did not have records for Sevastopol.  After looking at published books on the metrical books in the Ukrainian archives, it does not appear that any such records for the Jewish community of Sevastopol have survived to the present day.

Not everyone is aware that since 2009, the Ukrainian archives has been publishing a series of books providing official lists of what metrical books (vital records, or birth, marriage, divorce and death records) are in each branch of the archives.  They have been published as PDF copies of printed books, and are freely available over the internet.  They are, of course, in Ukrainian, but with translation guides available in many places, that is a small obstacle to overcome.  They are very easy to use.  These are the best sources - most complete and up to date - to check on what Jewish vital records are available in Ukrainian archives.

The problem is that they are very hard to find when searching the main website of the State Archival Service of Ukraine.  On the modern site, I can find links to only two of the ten volumes published so far.  These ten volumes are actually comprised of fifteen books, since several of the volumes were published in multiple parts.  The two web pages below contain links to the volumes published so far:
