I have 4 cards (3 postcards and 1 greeting card) written by my gf,
Samuel Rafel in 1908 and 1909 to my gm, Ida Altman before they were married in 1910. I would appreciate help >from anyone who can read and translate them for me. The file names are VM12965, VM12966, VM12967, VM12968. You can see them at: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate The individual addresses for each are: http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=12965 http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=12966 http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=12967 http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=12968 These files will be on Viewmate for the next 7 days. I have family members (in addition to myself) who are anxious to know the meaning of the cards, although I suspect they were of a romantic nature. I hope someone will be able to read the script as the originals are quite faded and deteriorating. Thank you. Seek Flora WASSERMAN, b 1827 in Hannover d. 1918 NYC

John Simmons
Morning all,
I am trying to locate the ancestors of my Gr Gr Grandmother Flora WASSERMAN b 28 Feb 1827 in Hannover d 12 Aug 1918 in Manhattan, NY. Her death certificate changes the year of her birth to 1831. She emmigrated to America prior to her marriage in Philadelphia in 1854 to Samuel George SIMMONS. I was lucky enough to get a copy of their Ketubah >from a fantastic and knowledeable archivist there. In it it give us her fathers name as Elchanan. Her Death Certificate lists her mother as Louisa FREDERICKS. We also know she had a sister Carrie b. Apr 1822 who was a widow with the last name FEIST. Most of the census documents have listed them >from Prussia but I finally found one that said Hannover. If these names correspond with anyone please let me know or if there are any suggestions on how to get further back I would appreciate that as well. John Simmons, Llanelli Wales <john@...> |

I'm coming across people >from Deptford (South East London) born aroundSouth East London Synagogue >from 1859. Deptford contained a Royal Dockyard so that it is likely that there were ships chandlers there who were Jewish similar to those in Chatham and Portsmouth. The Jews of Linz new book
#austria-czech
marksuss@...
Hello all,
I don't think anyone has mentioned the 2008 book: The Jews of Linz (review). JUEDISCHES LEBEN IN LINZ 1849-1943. BAND 1: INSTITUTIONEN BAND 2: FAMILIEN by Verena WAGNER Linz Wagner Verlag, 2008, 2 vols That is, Jewish Life in Linz 1849-1943 Volume 1: Institutions Volume 2: Families This German-language work is a meticulous and comprehensive account of the community structure of Linz >from formation to the war and beyond, with many photos. It includes information such as religious institutions, Zionist organisations and sporting clubs (for example). The second volume goes into depth regarding details of several families. I have been sent the books and would be happy to do look-ups for any members, please respond privately. I have no commercial connection to the book although relatives supplied some photographs and data. Shtetlseeker improvements
#austria-czech
I had not used Shtetlseeker http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/ in a while
and had not yet noticed the improvements. When you locate a town and go to the map, you can see any nearby town that has a Jewish community. On the first screen these may be listed on the right. But you can also click on the "JewishGen Resource Map" link and go to a map with the towns identified by the JewishGen tree logo. You can click on the towns and find out how many JGFF entries there are for that town and other information. A terrific new feature. Randy Schoenberg Los Angeles, CA |
