Re: INTRATOR RBaal Ha Tartak #general

Gideon

Hi Richard,

I am a 3rd cousin of Charles Mahler Z"L who started this thread.  Charles died a few years ago and I have been continuing his work on the Intrater/Intrator families.  I don't specifically work on Stryj (Turka), but since all of us come from the neighbourhood of Przemysl, I am assuming that we are all connected, though the exact connection of the branches pre-1800 is not clear yet.  I am connected to a few other researchers that are working on other branches of the family.

Best regards,

Gideon Intrater

At the end of each week, we have been featuring excerpts from Yizkor books in JewishGen's archive. You can find the archive of past Yizkor book excerpts here: https://bit.ly/3aCH1ak. One of the most feared and brutal groups in the Nazi vanguard was the Sicherheitsdienst or S.D. which served as the intelligence service for the S.S. and was a key perpetrator of the Holocaust.
Jews referred to the group as “The ‘Black Students,’” the title of a chapter in the Yizkor book of Hlybokaye in Belarus. The S.D. arrived in Hlybokaye in May 1942. With this “angel of death already sitting in the city,” the town’s Jews scrambled to build hiding places in attics, in cellars, under the floors, and in the gardens. They dug deep holes in cellars as well as making fake rooms in the walls and disguising staircases that could be reached through closets, ovens and cupboards. All this they had to do clandestinely so as not to attract the attention of the S.D.
They placed some hope in the promises of the German civil administration that the S.D.’s visit would pass without bloodshed and townspeople would only suffer material loss. The Minister of Justice advised the Judenrat that the S.D. would leave more quickly if a large amount of gold, jewelry, clothing, footwear, and money was assembled and given over to it.

Developing a tree #general

aaran1286@...

Shalom,

I am interested in developing a family tree that shows my family's connection through Rashi to King David. I would like the tree to be in hebrew.

Does anyone know if there is (a) any software I could use to fairly simply create a presentable tree that could be printed out and framed or (b) a firm that can design this at an affordable price (~$250 at most).

I would of course prefer something more beautiful, but even something like this would be wonderful (for the software-generated option):

Thank you very much.

Vilna kindergarten names from 1920's-1930's #poland #education

@acg

Greetings all, I'm trying to figure out/verify the spelling of two private elementary schools that existed in Vilna, Poland, in the 1920's and 1930's. I have audio references which are specific to kindergarten classes at each school. One school name is pronounced something like "Kindergarten of Shevi Levitz Kart" (I'm not sure if this is one word, or multiple words), the other, "Wigotsky". In the case of the latter, I'm relatively certain of the spelling. However, I would like to find a reference that verifies that.

Other private schools, at higher levels, that may have been associated with these two elementary schools were the middle school "Sophia Markovna Gurewitz", and the high school "Vilna Realgymnazye".

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Hi Shlomo,
I am so happy to read your post. You may be the key to unlocking a huge family mystery! Several years ago I learned that my great grandfather was not my bio ggf. My Nana's father was actually a mysterious Sam Scechers who legally married my ggm and disappeared less than a year later, after my Nana was born.
I am thinking this might be Samuel Sackler (died 1937) buried in Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, NY. Can you connect me to the grandson of whom you refer? Info I know about Sam is that parents were Judah Scechers and Eva Richwell. The three came from Russia. Sam married Celia Sage (shortened from Segerman). Family lore mentions Canada and that he was a bad man (guessing this might be the pregnancy out of wedlock scandal).
Thank you so much for any and all info you might have.
My research has also uncovered the Mississippi Sam.

Apparently, their digital copy is not freely available to the public, perhaps due to data privacy(?). Also, this copy may not be in their public catalog (I haven't checked) but I know for a fact that they have this digital copy, and can be viewed during a library visit.

When searching the name Chemerinsky from
Russia now Belarus, I found spellings starting with Cz , Cs, Ts and Tz. Perhaps you may want to try these or create other possibilities. Also,
Remember to search phonetically on databases.

From what I could string together from the Cyrillic, the pronunciation would likely have been closer to "Cherlivoursza"--presumably, someone transliterated it not knowing that what looks like an English "p" is a Cyrillic "r." However, this is of limited help: I still can't find any reference to this name or something similar.

Has anyone come across a similar name from that general region?

Re: Tribute Gifts in Memory of Susan E. King, Z'L #JewishGenUpdates

Mike Marvins

Greetings
Will send a tribute donation soon. I met Susan 25 plus years ago. She was a client at our Studio in Houston !. My Father Kaye Marvins (Maishe Kaplan ) photographed she and her brother as a gift for her parents. Years later she came in to place a reorder and I had started to work on the History of my Grandfather, photographer of Szczuczyn Poland. I used jewishgen for the first time ! Small world. Are you allowed to give info about any family I can send a note to ? Will there be a funeral or memorial service ?

Dear Friends,

It has been an emotional morning in the JewishGen community, as evidenced by the hundreds of messages being sent surrounding the passing of our founder, Susan E. King, z'l. Many have asked if a fund is being setup in her memory. A most fitting tribute would be to support JewishGen's Fall Appeal, which raises critically needed funds to support the organization as a whole. In the early years, Susan ran the JewishGen servers out her home in Texas, and surely she would want JewishGen to be secured from an operational standpoint.

You may make donations online by clicking hereor by check (please make it payable to JewishGen, and send to: JewishGen, 36 Battery Place, New York, NY 10280).

When making your donation, please be sure to click "Yes, this is an honor or memorial gift..." on the bottom of the page, and include that this gift is memory of Susan E. King z'l. You may also include a short tribute note. This will be publicly displayed on our wall of honor, which can be viewed here.

I will follow-up when we have more information.

Wishing everyone a Shabbat Shalom, and as we enter 2023, a wonderful, happy and healthy year ahead.

ORIGINAL MESSAGE

Dear JewishGen Community,

With deep sadness, we regret to inform the JewishGen community of the passing of Susan E. King, the legendary founder of JewishGen.

When Susan first created JewishGen, I doubt she expected the impact it would have upon thousands of people, and the countless family connections it would ultimately facilitate - including siblings who had been separated during the Holocaust.

I did not know Susan well, as she retired before my involvement with the organization. However, we connected in 2019, when as an expression of gratitude, we renamed our Volunteer of the Year award in her honor. She, more than anyone else, was able to galvanize people, and to provide them with both a sense of inspiration to get involved, and a sense of aspiration for what they could accomplish.

JewishGen will be there for future generations. When people many decades now wake up one day, and wonder what it means to be part of the Jewish people - JewishGen will be there

And this is all because of Susan.

So it is with deep regret and sadness that we offer our condolences to Susan’s entire family. We cannot possibly express our appreciation for her achievements. Nearly every element of Jewish genealogy that exists today is due to her vision so many decades ago.

And as JewishGen, in particular, embarks on the next phase of our growth and development, we will look to her wisdom and inspiration to guide us. We will be grassroots. We will be guided by a sense of vision and aspiration. And we will forever remain true to our roots - which is to preserve our Jewish history and heritage for future generations.

What rank are these uniforms? #romania #bessarabia

ninaschw

This photo was sent to me for use with the book cover for the Memorial Book of Edinet, Moldova

Friends Israel Millman and Fishel Mlay, of Edinet, were in the Romanian army in 1927. From their uniforms, can anyone tell what ranks they held? I have never seen fatigue caps with numbers embroidered on them as here, 8 and 5, and I can’t seem to find such a thing online. I suspect the brimless cap has to do with artillery or tanks—someplace with tight openings, where a cap brim might get in the way.

Many thanks in advance,
Nina Schwartz

Re: What happened to Sime Rosenthal Schwartzstein? or Who was living at 135 Belmont Av. Brooklyn NY in 1897? #usa

Sherri Bobish

Joel,

I also found 133 Belmont, as you did, and wondered why it was alone by itself without 135 or 131, etc.

A 1901 Brooklyn Daily Eagle article about a horse & wagon thief mentions that he was employed at 135 Belmont in Brooklyn for a furniture dealer at that address.  Your idea that 135 Belmont was a commercial address seems possible.

An 1897 annual report of NYC lists 135 Belmont as a 4-story frame store & dwelling.

Even if there were apartments above the store, it is possible that the enumerator did not realize that.

Thank you for all you have done for us genealogists in digitizing so much.  When I first started doing genealogy I had to go to NARA and crank out the old microfilm machine!  LOL

Best regards,

Sherri Bobish

Announcing the publication of the Memorial Book of Jezierna (Ozerna, Ukraine) #ukraine #JewishGenUpdates

Susan Rosin

Shalom everybody,

JewishGen Press is proud to announce the publication of our 157th
title:  Memorial book of Jezierna (Ozerna, Ukraine). This is the translation of Sefer Jezierna.

Details:

8.5” x 11” 230 pages, hard cover with original photographs

Editor of Original Yizkor Book: Y. Sigelman

Project Coordinators: Suri Edell-Greenberg and Talila Charap-Friedman

Cover Design: Nina Schwartz, Impulse Graphics

Layout: Jonathan Wind

Name indexing: Stefanie Holzman

In 1920, Jezierna (modern day Ozerna, Ukraine), located between Ternopil' and Lviv, became part of the new Republic of Poland. Most Jews in the town made their living as merchants, artisans, and tradesmen: bakers, carpenters, locksmiths, and orchard keepers. Some sold flax, honey, or wheat. Many of the grain mills and oil presses were Jewish-owned. The community supported a large synagogue, study house, cheder, and a four-grade secular Jewish public school. Three Zionist organizations emerged by the mid-1920s. A Jewish National house-Hatikvah House-was bought and renovated, eventually housing a library of Yiddish and world literature, pioneer training, and a drama club. Jezierna was occupied by the Nazis in July 1941, and entered a reign of terror and murder. Jews were often simply grabbed off the street and shot. A forced labor camp was set up, with Jews brought in from many neighboring towns. When the last Jews were expelled to Zborow in July 1942, only about 1,000 were left; Jewish Jezierna had ceased to exist. This book is our memorial to our village and its martyrs.

Hi Michael, I don’t think there is a connection between us but I’ll tell you what I do know. My father Arnold Deutsch & his mother Serene Perlstein Deutsch immigrated in 1923 from Czechoslovakia  to The Bronx. My father’s uncle Max (Meyer) Deutsch immigrated in the early 1900’s. He settled in Philadelphia. I don’t know of any other Deutsch relatives from the Bronx. Does any of this sound familiar to you?
