View Mate Translation Request - Hebrew. And a big thank you!

Sandy Kaplan Schepis
Hello!
Quite a few of you helped me with suggestions as I searched for Annie/Anna Kaplan, my first cousin once removed. Thank you for all of your help.
I found her! The NYC Department of Health is adding digitized records to their databases. After checking there periodically, I found Anne's marriage certificate. She married Stanford Stern on July 1, 1939. They had two daughters, the oldest of which is one of my DNA matches! I have reached out to her, but nothing yet. Unfortunately, Anne passed at age 54. Her gravestone is on View Mate at the following address. A Hebrew translation will complete her profile.

Help with clear picture and translation of Tombstone in Okopwa cemetery
#warsaw
tamama2e@...
My great grandfather Joseph Eliezer Edelman from Narewka Poland is buried in the Cemetary Warszawa (Okopowa) Sector 75 Row 13 #55
I found a photograph of the tombstone online but we were unable to translate the entire tombstone due to the unclear picture. Can someone take a clear picture of his tombstone and help me complete the translation. I think that the stone reads something like: • A day of wrath and rebuke upon us • Oy v’avoy (Woe) we all cried out • We were left crying out and mourning • The death of our father, a blow to our heads • • A gentle/comforting man and beloved (sought after) by all creatures. • He didn’t go in ways of lies and deception • His hand was outstretched to help his fellow man • He was exceedingly honest and wholesome • The flow of tears has been blocked from our eyes • Our heads….. • • Our father, our teacher, beloved of our hearts • Mr Yoseph Eliezer son of Benyamin • Eidelman from Narewka • He returned his soul Adar bet (16) 5673 • May his soul be bound in bonds of eternal life • (The last few lines are really hard to read, a lot of guess work here).

Researching Gggrandfather AHIEZER (Leizer or Shmuel) from Rajgrod in Lomza Gubernia
#poland
tamama2e@...
My maternal great grandfather was from Rajgrod ( I think) in the Lomza Gubernia region of NE Poland. He died young, sometime after the conception of his only child, my great grandmother Ida Sara Zylberstzejn (nee Achiezer). Her mother Sheine/ Jenny (nee Cyprokowska or Cypkowska) (circa 1846-1902) remarried Reuven Palenbaum from Szczuczyn when Ida (Chaya Sarah) was still an infant. Both were widowers. Reuven Z Avraham had several children from a previous marriage and went on to have two more with Sheine (Szejna) - Perla z Reuven Finkelstein (Nee Palenbaum) b. circa 1864 and Isaak (Jacob) Palenbaum b. circa 1870.
On Chaya Sara (Ida's) tombstone her father is listed as Eliezer. On her mother's marriage certificate to Reuven Palenbaum in Szczuczyn it appears his name might have been Shmuel (Her fathers name Shmuel Cyprokowska). I have not been able to locate: 1. Chaya Sarah's birth record (circa 1862-1906) 2. nor birth of her husband Shmuel? Leizer? ACHIEZER (?) 3. Records from Scheine's father's family CYPROKOWSKA 4. Marriage certificate of Sheine to her first husband ACHIEZER 5. Also Issac, Jacob Palenbaum came to NY but I have not had much luck tracking his line of the family in the USA Thanks for help with this research. I have traced my paternal line back to my 5X Great Grandfather Abraham FUSSFELD from Brody, Galicia (Ukraine today). His 2X great grandsons emigrated to the USA in the late 1800s. I would like to find the origin of the last name of my family. It is Germanic in that it literally means "field (feld) of feet (fus)" in German.
Any help or ideas are appreciated. Thanks. -- Michael J Fusfield Cherry Hill, NJ mike@...

Some 10 years ago I found a letter written to me by a young lady who
signed as my "little sister" Franny. The letter was written in 1965 when we both college students. Not remembering such a "little sister", and her family name nor her address were on the letter I started investigating about her through this jewishgen group and found that she was the daughter of a Rabbi Irving Dick (Conservative) and was living then in California ( I think in the L.A.) area/ I asked then members of this group, if anyone had contact with her, if she would like to reconnect with her "older brother" but was informed that she was not interested. I understood from the letter and hearing a bit about her personal life that she has had several disappointments in life (I hope I'm wrong) I don't want to pry, but if anyone in this group can contact her and find out if she would like to renew the above connection. I'm open to suggestions to "drop" the issue. The invetigation 10 years ago with the help of this group was fascinating. Yoni Ben-Ari (Katzoff), Jerusalem (formerly Chicago)

Re: We Need Your Help Solving DOE Cases

The DOE project is a US Project to identify dead bodies that have been located by police where no identification of the body has ever been made - so the remains are "John Doe" or "Jane Doe". This will permit families with a family member who has been missing for years to have some closure. The project focuses on adults, as it does not want to have anything to do with identifying criminals.

Jacob,
Also, looking in the Friends of the Budapest Jewish Cemetery database, I find: Marta Fischer, wife of Nandor Braun, died 1965 age 70 (therefore born about 1895), Section 24/B, Row 23, Grave 2. And, Nandor Braun, died 1968, age 83 (therefore born about 1885), Section 24/B, Row 23, Grave 2. So it is quite possible this is your Marta Fischer and she remarried to Nandor Braun. Re: Routes walked from Ukraine to United Kingdom 1917

Dominique Anderson
My father left Lodz —at the time part of the Russian Empire —in 1917 or 1918. What he said is what follows. Obviously I cannot verify it.
He was living with his paternal aunt (Fanny) at the time (the Prussian had taken his father prisoner, and his mother had died of typhus a few months earlier). Fanny had a son, Zacharyiasz, who was about the same age and had the same first name as my father’s older brother who had already left Poland. As so many Jews at the time, Fanny’s son was drafted in the Russian army and deserted. To flee, he assumed his cousin’s (my father’s older brother) identity on what my father called “a family passport” (I still have to find out what exactly was this document). Fanny gave them “a lot of money” and they left town one evening in February. They were picked up by farmers. I am not sure how far they went that way, but they arrived in Breslau where a Jewish organization helped them make it to Germany (yes, Germany!!), Kassel to be exact, where his father was. From there he ended up in the Kassel Jewish orphanage until he was 14. Zacharyiasz emigrated later (20’s) with his German wife and young daughter to Argentina where he stayed until his death in the 70’s. I know that part to be true because I found his grave (with photo) in a cemetery in Buenos Aires, the identity of his wife and daughter and the ship manifest where he was listed. I can’t imagine this story is unique. Good luck on your search. -- Dominique Anderson Charlottesville, VA

I agree with that but the problem I have had with family finder is (1) there is so little information on it, and names are so common, its really a needle in a haystack and (2) contacts on it I have found are generally exceedingly old. Emailing someone who hasn't been on the site for 10+ years based solely on a surname with nothing else seems pretty pointless .

There is a museum of work by Isaachar von Rybak in Bat Yam Israel. At least until recently, it was managed by his wife.
I believe that there may also be a catalog Raisonee of his work. This information is off the top of my head. You can get a good information as well as pictures of his work by googling his name, checking Wikipedia, etc. Avivah Pinski Researching Resnik- Drohiczyn, Poland, Zuchman - Poland, Pinski- Belarus, Rifczes - Ukraine, Vienna, London, Sondak-Latvia, Slonimsky-Belarus -- Avivah R. Re: Who is searching for whom?

I guess we approach our research differently. I would never even consider cluttering up a help board with all of my relatives on a board like this. I would only post the one I am stubbing my toe on that I need help with. I get very frustrated trying to contact everyone who has a relative with the same surname in a given georgraphic area and then waiting for a reply that rarely comes. Usually don't even know if the message was received or the person is still searching.

The once genteel backwater of Sephardic genealogy has recently hit the
headlines with scandal over certification of candidates for Portuguese and Spanish citizenship. David Mendoza believes that the underlying problem is the rise of the crypto-Judaism movement that claims that literally hundreds of millions of people have meaningful Sephardic ancestry. What is this movement, where did it come from, and what are the implications for Sephardic genealogy? David shares his personal opinion in this Sunday's Sephardic World meeting. David Mendoza is a host of Sephardic World, a founder of the Sephardic Genealogical Society and principal author of their Code of Conduct. He currently works as a professional genealogist.
