Rabbinic Genealogy SIG #Rabbinic Re: finding another daughter of Reb Itzele Volozhiner #rabbinic

Yonatan Ben-Ari

Dear Charles

I don't know if you were refering to my posting, but I repeat our
supposed connection with the Volozhin family.

There is a family tradition that we are descendant >from Reb Chaim of
Volozhin. The tradition has it that my ggrandmother, Sarah Hinde
(family name?) was orphaned at a young age, and that Rebw Itzele was
her "Unterfere" at her wedding as her parents werent alive then.
There are a few other little, yet unconfirmed items , that she grew up
in the house of a Rw Eliezer of Ruzhinei and that she had a relative a
Rabbi Mordechai who was the AB"D of Karlin during the first half of
the 19th cent.

This Sarah Hinde married a Shlomo Kantor of Karlin who died at a young
age and she and her four children (Esther, Bracha, Peshe and Chaim
Dov) made aliya to Yerushalaim around 1870.

A family rumour has it that Rabbi Mordechai Yaffe, who was a Rav in
Ruzhinei and then in Or Yehuda (Israel) during the latter part of the
19th cent. and was close to the Volozhin family, told one of Chaim
Dov's grandchildren that he knows that he Chaim Dov was a descendant
of Reb Chaim.

I thought that there may be a connection to Reb Itzele's daughter
Raichel who married a Shmuel Landau (who gave a shiur in the Yeshiva)
and according to published sources both parents died at a young age
and left anorphaned daughter (story seems to fit) but I haven't found
any other sources to confirm this connection.

I would be happy to hear your view on the above.

I have ancestors named ARNOLD (originally NATHAN) and DREYFUSS who lived in
Hechingen and the Jewish settlement of Friedrichstrasse, which is now part
of Hechingen, as outlined here several years ago. Thus, I have looked at
these records both at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish
People in Jerusalem and the Hauptstaatsarchiv in Stuttgart. When I learned
last fall here that these records were now on line, I was able to look
through these records and those for other places at a more leisurely pace
uncovering additional information, especially branches that had moved to
nearby communities.

I checked the birth record that Mr. Kaufmann refers to, and it actually
reads "Kele" not "Kale" although it is somewhat difficult to read. The 1814
birth record of Israel, a brother of Liebermann, clearly reads "Kehle" for
the mother's name. In addition, one of the Hechingen family books reads
"Kele". This family book also gives further information including the names
of Kele's parents. I will write separately to Mr. Kaufmann to describe
details.

This still completely supports Michael Bernet's analysis.

You may submit inquiries regarding names on the Residenten Liste to
Registry@.... Please be specific where possible, including given name
and dates and places of birth where known.

You should be aware that this source is essentially a finding aid to other

I wish to thank all the GerSIGgers who replied to my query about what I
thought was an unusual woman's name. Micheal Bernet's, which was published,
sums it up with his usual thoroughness. Thanks for helping diminish my
profound ignorance in such matters.

Re: Jewish Distillers as Tavernkeepers Revisited #general

Ava Cohn <avatom@...>

There has been much discussion about tavernkeepers/distillers/brewers in Galicia,
Lithuania, Hungary/Slovakia, Bohemia/Moravia and Poland. My SHENKMAN ( Yiddish for
tavernkeeper) family was >from Belarus. To date, I have found very few families by
the surname SHENKMAN/SCHENKMAN in the existing records. I have found part of the
family that changed their name to SANDERSON due to antisemitism. And I have been
told a legend about antisemitism regarding one tavernkeeper in Belarus.

Other than the two references cited by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett in yesterday's
post and by Paul King on Sunday's post, can anyone tell me anything more specific
about Russian and Belarussian tavernkeepers, the laws governing their profession
and how they would have differed >from those of the other areas in eastern Europe
circa 18th to 19th centuries?

Searching: SHENKMAN/FRIEDMAN/SELIGMAN: Vitebsk gub., Riga

HANDELMAN/SHTERN/FISCHMANN: Shpikov, Bratslav

Dear Genners,

I have a postcard/photograph >from 1913 of what I presume to be some members of my
Lodz family and on the back of which is a few lines of what I think may be Yiddish.
May I please call upon the generosity of the Genners community and ask if anyone
would be kind enough to translate this for me as most of this side of the family
was lost to us and the lines may help to identify. I can send us an attachment to
anyone kind enough to contact my private email oldandintheway9@...
